Talking About Plots and Characters in Mandarin: Saying an Ending Surprised You and Recommending a Story

Learn elementary Mandarin to describe a plot twist, talk about characters, say an ending surprised you, and recommend a narrative work such as a film, novel or TV series.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson you will learn to talk about stories in Mandarin: films, novels, TV series and plays. Narrative media differ from music because they have plots (情节, qíngjié) and characters (人物, rénwù), so you need words for what happened and who did it. You will learn to say that an ending was surprising, to describe a character simply, and to recommend a story to a friend. Mandarin verbs do not change for tense or person, and there are no articles or plural endings, so the main work is word order and choosing the right time words. Pay attention to 很 (hěn), which links a subject to an adjective, and to 我觉得 (wǒ juéde), which softens opinions.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a story's ending was surprising using 结局 (jiéjú) and 没想到 (méi xiǎngdào).
    • describe a character with a simple adjective sentence such as 主角很聪明 (zhǔjué hěn cōngming).
    • recommend a film, novel or series and give one reason with 因为 (yīnwèi).

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    这个结局很意外。

    This ending was surprising.

    zhè ge jiéjú hěn yìwài

Use 结局 for the ending of a story, and 很 before the adjective 意外. Do not add 是 before 很.

    我没想到会这样。

I didn't expect it would turn out like this.

    wǒ méi xiǎngdào huì zhèyàng

没想到 literally means 'didn't think of/expect'. It is a very common way to react to a plot twist.

    主角是谁?

    Who is the main character?

    zhǔjué shì shéi

主角 means main character or protagonist. 谁 is commonly pronounced shéi; shuí is also correct.

    我推荐你看这本书。

I recommend you read this book.

wǒ tuījiàn nǐ kàn zhè běn shū

推荐 (tuījiàn) means recommend. Use the pattern 推荐 + person + verb + object. 本 is the measure word for books.

    因为故事很有意思。

Because the story is very interesting.

    yīnwèi gùshi hěn yǒu yìsi

Use 因为 to give a reason. 有意思 means interesting; the opposite is 没意思 (méi yìsi), boring.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe a character or a story, use 主语 + 很 + 形容词: 主角很聪明 (the protagonist is clever), 故事很感人 (the story is moving), 结局很意外 (the ending is surprising). The word 很 does not mean 'very' here; it links the subject to the adjective. Without 很, a bare adjective can sound like a comparison: 主角聪明 suggests 'the protagonist is cleverer'. To say what happened, use time words instead of changing the verb: 我看过这部电影 (I have seen this film), 我昨天看了这部电影 (I saw this film yesterday). The verb 看 stays the same.

    When to use it

Use 没想到 when you want to show surprise at a plot event: 我没想到主角会死 (I didn't expect the protagonist would die). Use 结局很意外 when you are describing the ending itself, for example in a review: 这个结局很意外,但是很好看 (this ending is surprising, but it is very good to watch). Use 推荐 when a friend asks for something to watch or read: 我推荐你看这个电视剧 (I recommend you watch this TV series). If you want to soften your opinion, start with 我觉得 (wǒ juéde, I think): 我觉得这本书很好看 (I think this book is very good).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你昨天看的那部电影怎么样?

How was that film you watched yesterday?nǐ zuótiān kàn de nà bù diànyǐng zěnmeyàng
    B

    很好看,但是结局很意外。我没想到会这样。

It was very good, but the ending was surprising. I didn't expect it would turn out like this.hěn hǎokàn, dànshì jiéjú hěn yìwài. wǒ méi xiǎngdào huì zhèyàng
    A

    主角是谁?故事有意思吗?

Who is the main character? Is the story interesting?zhǔjué shì shéi? gùshi yǒu yìsi ma
    B

    主角是一个老师,故事很有意思。我推荐你看!

The main character is a teacher, and the story is very interesting. I recommend you watch it!zhǔjué shì yí ge lǎoshī, gùshi hěn yǒu yìsi. wǒ tuījiàn nǐ kàn

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese conversation, 推荐 (recommend) is usually followed by a concrete action, not just a title: 我推荐你看这部电影 is more natural than naming the film alone. When you disagree about a story, soften it with 我觉得 or 有一点 (a little): 我觉得结局有一点奇怪. Direct criticism such as 这个结局不好 can sound blunt among new acquaintances, so adding a reason with 因为 makes the comment feel more like discussion than judgment.

    One thing to watch for

    这个结局是很意外。

Try this instead: Do not add 是 before 很 with adjectives. Say 这个结局很意外 (this ending is surprising). Use 是 only in patterns like 这个结局是意外的吗? when forming a yes-no question with 是, or when identifying something: 主角是老师 (the protagonist is a teacher).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I didn't expect the ending would be like this' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我没想到结局会这样。

没想到 expresses unexpectedness, and 会这样 means 'would be like this'. You can also say 我没想到结局是这样, which is equally correct.

2Turn 主角 / 聪明 into a complete sentence meaning 'The protagonist is clever.'

    Show a sample answer

    主角很聪明。

The pattern is subject + 很 + adjective. Without 很, 主角聪明 can sound comparative, so 很 is needed here.

3You want to recommend a TV series and give a reason. What sentence can you say?

    Show a sample answer

    我推荐你看这个电视剧,因为故事很有意思。

推荐 + person + verb + object gives the recommendation, and 因为 introduces the reason. You could also say 因为主角很可爱 (because the protagonist is cute).

    Take this with you

Use 结局很意外 and 没想到 for surprising endings, 主角很 + adjective for characters, and 我推荐你 + verb for recommendations. Keep the verb unchanged and let time words and 很 do the work.
