Chinese for Talking About Ongoing Hobbies: 'I've Been Painting for Years' and 'I'm Learning Guitar'

Learn to express how long you've done a hobby and what you're currently learning in Mandarin, using 已经…了 and 正在…呢. Build on basic hobby vocabulary to add duration and progress.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you'll learn to go beyond simple statements like 我喜欢画画 (wǒ xǐhuan huàhuà) 'I like painting' to express how long you've been doing something and what you're currently learning. We'll focus on two key patterns: 已经…了 (yǐjīng…le) for duration, and 正在…呢 (zhèngzài…ne) for ongoing actions. You'll also learn to talk about learning a musical instrument, like 学吉他 (xué jítā) 'learn guitar'. By the end, you'll be able to say 'I've been painting for years' and 'I'm learning guitar' naturally in Mandarin.

    By the end, you can…

    • say how long I've been doing a hobby using 已经…了.
    • say what I'm currently learning using 正在…呢.
    • ask and answer questions about hobbies and duration.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我已经画画画了五年了。

I've been painting for five years.

wǒ yǐjīng huàhuà huà le wǔ nián le

Use 已经…了 to emphasize duration. The first 画 is a verb, the second 画 is a noun (painting). The verb 画画 is a verb-object compound, so the sentence literally means 'I have painted paintings for five years.'

    我正在学吉他。

    I'm learning guitar.

    wǒ zhèngzài xué jítā

正在… indicates an action in progress. 吉他 is a loanword for guitar. 正在 can be shortened to 在 in casual speech.

    你学中文多久了?

How long have you been learning Chinese?

    nǐ xué Zhōngwén duōjiǔ le

多久了 asks about duration. Literally 'how long already'.

    我学了两年了。

I've been learning for two years.

wǒ xué le liǎng nián le

The first 了 after the verb indicates completion or experience; the second 了 at the end emphasizes the duration up to now.

    我还在学呢。

    I'm still learning.

    wǒ hái zài xué ne

还在…呢 emphasizes that the action is still ongoing. 呢 softens the tone.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To say how long you've been doing something, use: Subject + 已经 + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了. For example, 我已经画画画了五年了 (I've been painting for five years). The first 了 after the verb indicates the action has been completed up to a point, and the final 了 emphasizes the duration continues to now. For ongoing actions, use 正在 + Verb + (呢): 我正在学吉他 (I'm learning guitar). 呢 at the end makes it sound more natural and can imply 'right now' or 'still'.

    When to use it

Use 已经…了 when you want to highlight how long you've been doing a hobby, often to show experience or dedication. For example, 我已经学钢琴学了三年了 (I've been learning piano for three years). Use 正在…呢 for actions happening right now or around this time. For example, 我正在学做菜 (I'm learning to cook). If you want to say you're still doing it, add 还: 我还在学呢 (I'm still learning). These patterns are common in everyday conversation when discussing hobbies and skills.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

How long have you been learning?nǐ xué duōjiǔ le

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese, when talking about hobbies, it's common to mention the duration to show commitment. Using 已经…了 adds a sense of accomplishment. Also, 学 (xué) is used for learning any skill, including instruments and languages. Unlike English, Chinese does not change verb forms for tense; instead, it uses particles like 了 and adverbs like 已经 and 正在 to indicate time. This makes the structure simpler but requires attention to context.

    One thing to watch for

Omitting the second 了 in duration sentences, e.g., 我已经画画画五年。

Try this instead: Always include the final 了 to emphasize the duration up to now: 我已经画画画了五年了。 Without it, the sentence sounds incomplete or implies a different meaning.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'I've been learning Chinese for three years'?

    Show a sample answer

    我已经学中文学了三年了。

This uses 已经…了 with the duration 三年. The verb 学 is repeated? Actually, 学中文 is the verb phrase, so it's 学中文学了三年了. Alternatively, you can say 我学中文已经学了三年了. Both are correct.

2Translate: 'She is learning to dance.'

    Show a sample answer

    她正在学跳舞。

正在 indicates an ongoing action. 跳舞 is a verb-object compound meaning 'dance'. You can also add 呢 at the end: 她正在学跳舞呢.

3Ask 'How long have you been playing guitar?'

    Show a sample answer

    你弹吉他弹了多久了?

For playing instruments, use 弹 (tán) for guitar/piano. The structure is Verb + Object + Verb + 了 + Duration + 了. Alternatively, 你学吉他多久了? is also acceptable if focusing on learning.

    Take this with you

Use 已经…了 to say how long you've been doing a hobby, and 正在…呢 for what you're currently learning. Remember the double 了 for duration, and practice with common hobbies like 画画 and 学吉他.
