In this workshop you will practice a short conversation about books and movies in Chinese. You will ask how a film was, react to a surprising ending, ask who the main character is, and give a recommendation. Each native example comes from the supplied recordings, and you will see its English meaning before you use it. You can play both roles with the audio, but there is no automatic assessment, so use the answer keys to check yourself.
Asking About a Film and Reacting
Start by asking how a film was. The question «你昨天看的那部电影怎么样?» means "How was that film you watched yesterday?" A natural answer can give a general opinion and then add a reaction to the ending. The line «这个结局很意外。» means "This ending was surprising." To explain that you did not expect the result, use «我没想到会这样。», which means "I didn't expect it would turn out like this." In the recorded exchange, speaker B answers with «很好看,但是结局很意外。 , which means "It was very good, but the ending was surprising. I didn't expect it would turn out like this." Notice the order: first the question, then the answer, then the added reaction. When you practice, keep that order even if you swap roles.
Asking About the Main Character and Recommending
After hearing about a film, you can ask for more details. The question «主角是谁?» means "Who is the main character?" A longer version from the recording is «主角是谁?故事有意思吗?», which means "Who is the main character? Is the story interesting?" 我推荐你看!» means "The main character is a teacher, and the story is very interesting. I recommend you watch it!" If you want to recommend a book instead, use «我推荐你看这本书。», which means "I recommend you read this book." These lines let you keep the same topic going: ask about the main character, ask whether the story is interesting, and then recommend the book or movie.
Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

It was very good, but the ending was surprising. I didn't expect it would turn out like this.

The main character is a teacher, and the story is very interesting. I recommend you watch it!Your turn
Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.
Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer About a Film
Imagine a friend watched a film yesterday. You will ask how it was, and your partner will answer with an opinion and a reaction to the ending. Then swap roles and repeat.
Your task: Role A: ask how the film was using «你昨天看的那部电影怎么样?». . Role A: respond to the surprising ending with «这个结局很意外。» . After one round, swap roles and keep the same order: question, answer, reaction.
Reply Comprehension: Choose the Matching Response
Read the question and choose the best reply from the options. All options are taught lines from the recordings.
Your task: Question: «你昨天看的那部电影怎么样?». . Choose the reply that answers the question about the film. Then answer this follow-up: if someone asks «主角是谁?故事有意思吗?», which line gives the matching answer?
Recall With Correct Roles: Book or Movie Recommendation
Work with a partner or the audio. One person asks about a film, and the other answers, asks about the main character, and then recommends. Keep the roles clear and the order fixed.
Your task: Role A: ask «你昨天看的那部电影怎么样?». . Role A: ask «主角是谁? Then Role B recommends a book with «我推荐你看这本书。». Swap roles and repeat without looking at the lines if you can.
Common questions
Can I use these lines to talk about a book instead of a movie?
Yes. The reaction lines «这个结局很意外。» can describe a surprising ending in a book too. To recommend a book, use «我推荐你看这本书。», which means "I recommend you read this book." For a movie recommendation, the recorded line «主角是一个老师,故事很有意思。我推荐你看!» includes "I recommend you watch it!"
What should I say first when I practice with a partner?
Begin with the question. For example, ask «你昨天看的那部电影怎么样?» first, which means "How was that film you watched yesterday?" Then your partner can answer with «很好看,但是结局很意外。 . After that, you can ask «主角是谁?故事有意思吗?» and your partner can answer with «主角是一个老师,故事很有意思。 Keep this order even if you swap roles.
