    Words you’ll actually use

    Checking available voices…

    这个包裹可以保价吗?

    Can I insure this package?

    Zhège bāoguǒ kěyǐ bǎojià ma?

Use 保价 (bǎojià) specifically for postal insurance where you declare a value. This is the most common term at Chinese post offices.

    我想给这个包裹买保险。

I'd like to buy insurance for this package.

Wǒ xiǎng gěi zhège bāoguǒ mǎi bǎoxiǎn.

保险 (bǎoxiǎn) is the general word for insurance. This phrase is clear and polite, suitable for both post offices and courier companies.

    保价费是多少?

How much is the insurance fee?

    Bǎojià fèi shì duōshao?

Use this to ask about the cost of insurance. 费 (fèi) means fee.

    最高保价金额是多少?

What is the maximum insured amount?

    Zuìgāo bǎojià jīn'é shì duōshao?

Ask this to find out the maximum coverage allowed. 金额 (jīn'é) means amount of money.

    如果包裹丢了,怎么赔偿?

If the package is lost, how do I get compensated?

Rúguǒ bāoguǒ diū le, zěnme péicháng?

Use this to ask about the claims process. 赔偿 (péicháng) means compensation.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if something is allowed, use the pattern: [Subject] + 可以 + [Verb] + 吗? For example, 这个包裹可以保价吗? (Can this package be insured?) You can replace 保价 with other verbs: 这个包裹可以寄吗? (Can this package be sent?) 这里可以刷卡吗? (Can I pay by card here?) The pattern is polite and common in service encounters. To state a desire, use 我想 + [Verb] + [Object]: 我想买保险。 (I want to buy insurance.)

    When to use it

Use 保价 when you are at a post office (邮局) or using China Post, where insurance is called 保价 and the fee is based on the declared value. Use 保险 when talking to private couriers like SF Express (顺丰) or YTO (圆通), where they may offer 保险 as an optional service. If you're unsure, start with 保价; it's widely understood. For international packages, ask 可以保价吗? and then 最高保价金额是多少? to know the limit. Always ask about 赔偿 (compensation) in case of loss.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    您好,这个包裹可以保价吗?

Hello, can I insure this package?Nín hǎo, zhège bāoguǒ kěyǐ bǎojià ma?
    B

    可以。您想保价多少?

Yes. How much would you like to insure it for?Kěyǐ. Nín xiǎng bǎojià duōshao?
    A

    我想保价500元。保价费是多少?

I'd like to insure it for 500 yuan. How much is the insurance fee?Wǒ xiǎng bǎojià wǔbǎi yuán. Bǎojià fèi shì duōshao?
    B

    保价费是保价金额的1%,也就是5元。如果包裹丢了,我们按保价金额赔偿。

The insurance fee is 1% of the insured amount, so 5 yuan. If the package is lost, we compensate according to the insured amount.Bǎojià fèi shì bǎojià jīn'é de bǎifēnzhī yī, yě jiùshì wǔ yuán. Rúguǒ bāoguǒ diū le, wǒmen àn bǎojià jīn'é péicháng.

A little context goes a long way

In China, postal insurance (保价) is regulated and typically costs around 1% of the declared value, with a maximum limit (often 20,000 yuan for China Post). Private couriers may have different terms. It's standard to ask about 赔偿 (compensation) upfront. Politeness is appreciated; use 您 (nín) for the clerk. Don't assume insurance is automatic; you must request it.

    One thing to watch for

Using 保险 (bǎoxiǎn) at the post office when you mean postal insurance.

Try this instead: At China Post, the correct term is 保价 (bǎojià). For example, say 这个包裹可以保价吗? not 这个包裹可以保险吗? 保险 is more general and may be understood, but 保价 is precise and expected.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Can I insure this package?' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    这个包裹可以保价吗?

This uses the pattern 可以...吗? with 保价, the standard term for postal insurance. You could also say 这个包裹可以买保险吗? but 保价 is more specific.

    2What does 保价费 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Insurance fee

保价 (bǎojià) means insured value, and 费 (fèi) means fee. Together, it refers to the cost of insuring a package.

3Translate: 'If the package is lost, how do I get compensated?'

    Show a sample answer

    如果包裹丢了,怎么赔偿?

This uses 如果...怎么... to ask about the process. 赔偿 (péicháng) means compensate. You could also say 怎么索赔? (How to claim?)

    Take this with you

Use 保价 (bǎojià) to ask about insuring a package at Chinese post offices. Remember the pattern 可以...吗? and ask about 保价费 and 赔偿 to fully understand coverage.
