Ask About Insurance in Chinese: A Beginner Speaking Workshop

Practice asking whether you can insure a package, stating an insured amount, and asking the fee, using recorded lines.

In this workshop you practice a short, realistic exchange at a shipping counter. You will ask whether a package can be insured, say how much insurance you want, and ask about the fee. You will also listen to a staff reply and choose the correct response. The recorded lines give you the exact wording to use, so you can speak with confidence before you try the exchange on your own.

Asking Whether You Can Insure a Package

Start with a simple question. The recorded line «这个包裹可以保价吗?» means "Can I insure this package?" It is a direct way to ask whether insurance is possible. If you want to sound a little more polite or formal, you can open with a greeting first, as in «您好,这个包裹可以保价吗?», which means "Hello, can I insure this package?" Both lines ask the same basic thing. Use «这个包裹可以保价吗?» when you want a short question, and use «您好,这个包裹可以保价吗?» when you want to greet the person before asking. Practice saying each line slowly, then at a natural speed. Keep your tone rising at the end, because you are asking a question.

Saying What You Want and Asking the Fee

When you want to state your intention, use «我想给这个包裹买保险。», which means "I'd like to buy insurance for this package." This is useful when the staff member has already said insurance is possible. To ask about the cost, use «保价费是多少?», which means "How much is the insurance fee?" If you also want to know the upper limit, use «最高保价金额是多少?», which means "What is the maximum insured amount?" In a full exchange, you might state an amount and then ask the fee, as in «我想保价500元。保价费是多少?», which means "I'd like to insure it for 500 yuan. How much is the insurance fee?" explains that the fee is one percent of the insured amount, so it is 5 yuan, and that if the package is lost, compensation follows the insured amount. Listen for the amount and the fee when you hear this reply.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

I'd like to buy insurance for this package.

Wǒ xiǎng gěi zhège bāoguǒ mǎi bǎoxiǎn.

How much is the insurance fee?

    Bǎojià fèi shì duōshao?

What is the maximum insured amount?

    Zuìgāo bǎojià jīn'é shì duōshao?

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    A

Hello, can I insure this package?
    B

Yes. How much would you like to insure it for?
    A

I'd like to insure it for 500 yuan. How much is the insurance fee?
    B

The insurance fee is 1% of the insured amount, so 5 yuan. If the package is lost, we compensate according to the insured amount.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Counter Exchange

You are at a shipping counter with a package. The staff member is ready to help. You will play the customer and read your lines aloud. If you have a partner, your partner can read the staff lines. If you are alone, read both parts, but keep the order: customer question, staff reply, customer follow-up, staff answer.

Your task: Read the customer lines in order. First say «您好,这个包裹可以保价吗?» to greet and ask whether you can insure the package. Then, after the staff reply, say «我想保价500元。保价费是多少?» to state that you want to insure it for 500 yuan and ask the insurance fee. If you are working with a partner, your partner reads the staff lines «可以。 in between. Do not change the order.

    2

    Choose the Correct Reply

You will hear or read a staff reply and choose the customer line that fits. The staff reply is «可以。 How much would you like to insure it for?" This reply accepts insurance and asks for the insured amount.

Your task: Which customer line fits best after «可以。 保价费是多少?», which states an amount and asks the fee. Option B: «保价费是多少?», which only asks how much the insurance fee is. Choose A or B, then say your chosen line aloud.

    3

    Recall and Swap Roles

Now recall the exchange without looking at the lines. You will still use only the recorded lines. If you have a partner, swap roles: the customer becomes the staff member and the staff member becomes the customer. The order of the exchange stays the same: customer question, staff reply, customer follow-up, staff answer.

Your task: From memory, say the customer question that asks whether insurance is possible. Then say the staff reply that accepts and asks for the amount. Then say the customer line that gives 500 yuan and asks the fee. Then say the staff answer that explains the fee and compensation. If you swapped roles, the new customer still asks first, and the new staff member still replies second.

    Common questions

Can I practice alone if I do not have a partner?

Yes. You can read both the customer and staff lines aloud yourself. Keep the same order: customer question first, then staff reply, then customer follow-up, then staff answer. This helps you hear how the exchange fits together even without another speaker.

What should I listen for in the staff reply?

Listen for whether the staff member accepts insurance and asks for an amount, as in «可以。您想保价多少?», or explains the fee and compensation, as in «保价费是保价金额的1%,也就是5元。 . The first kind of reply invites you to state an amount, and the second kind gives you the fee information you asked for.
