Mandarin Chinese for Customs Declarations: Ask 'Do I need to declare this?'
Learn to ask if you need to declare an item at Chinese customs, understand key terms on declaration forms, and respond to officer questions with clear, polite Mandarin.

When you enter mainland China, you may need to go through customs (海关, hǎiguān). If you are carrying items like electronics, large amounts of cash, or food, you might wonder whether to declare them. This lesson teaches you how to ask 'Do I need to declare this?' in Mandarin, understand common terms on the customs declaration form, and answer basic questions from customs officers. You will learn the key verb 申报 (shēnbào, to declare) and how to use it in polite questions. We will also cover how to say you have nothing to declare and how to ask for help if you don't understand. All phrases are in simplified Chinese with pinyin and tone marks. By the end, you will be able to handle a routine customs interaction with confidence.
By the end, you can…
- ask whether a specific item needs to be declared.
- understand and respond to basic customs questions about declaration.
- say 'I have nothing to declare' and ask for clarification politely.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

这个需要申报吗?
Do I need to declare this?
Zhège xūyào shēnbào ma?
Use this while holding or pointing to the item. 这个 (zhège) means 'this one'. 需要 (xūyào) means 'need'. 申报 (shēnbào) is the formal term for 'declare' at customs. 吗 (ma) makes it a yes/no question.
我没有需要申报的东西。
I have nothing to declare.
Wǒ méiyǒu xūyào shēnbào de dōngxi.
Say this when you have no items to declare. 没有 (méiyǒu) means 'don't have'. 东西 (dōngxi) means 'things'. This is a complete sentence and very common at the customs counter.
申报单在哪里拿?
Where can I get the declaration form?
Shēnbàodān zài nǎlǐ ná?
Use this to ask for the form. 申报单 (shēnbàodān) means 'declaration form'. 在哪里 (zài nǎlǐ) means 'where'. 拿 (ná) means 'to get/take'. You can also say 申报表 (shēnbàobiǎo) for 'declaration form'.
这个用英文怎么说?
How do you say this in English?
Zhège yòng Yīngwén zěnme shuō?
Use this if you don't understand a word on the form or an officer's question. 用英文 (yòng Yīngwén) means 'in English'. 怎么说 (zěnme shuō) means 'how to say'. This is a polite way to ask for help.
我带了超过五千美元现金。
I am carrying over 5,000 US dollars in cash.
Wǒ dài le chāoguò wǔqiān měiyuán xiànjīn.
Use this to declare cash if you have more than the equivalent of 5,000 USD. 带了 (dài le) means 'brought/carrying'. 超过 (chāoguò) means 'exceeding'. 现金 (xiànjīn) means 'cash'. China requires declaring cash over 5,000 USD or 20,000 RMB.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
The pattern '这个需要申报吗?' (Zhège xūyào shēnbào ma?) is your key question. You can replace 这个 with other items: 这些 (zhèxiē, these) for multiple items, 那个 (nàge, that) for something farther away. To ask about a specific item, say the item name before 需要申报吗: 笔记本电脑需要申报吗? (Bǐjìběn diànnǎo xūyào shēnbào ma? 'Does a laptop need to be declared?'). The verb 申报 (shēnbào) is formal and used only for customs or tax declarations. For a more polite tone, add 请问 (qǐngwèn, 'may I ask') at the beginning: 请问,这个需要申报吗? (Qǐngwèn, zhège xūyào shēnbào ma?).
When to use it
Use these phrases when you are at the customs inspection area, before or after baggage claim. If you are unsure about an item, ask '这个需要申报吗?' while showing it. If you have nothing to declare, you can say '我没有需要申报的东西' and proceed through the green channel (绿色通道, lǜsè tōngdào). If you have items to declare, go to the red channel (红色通道, hóngsè tōngdào) and present your declaration form. When an officer asks you a question and you don't understand, say '这个用英文怎么说?' or '请说慢一点' (Qǐng shuō màn yīdiǎn, 'Please speak more slowly'). Always keep your answers short and polite.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
您好,请出示您的护照和申报单。
Hello, please show your passport and declaration form.Nín hǎo, qǐng chūshì nín de hùzhào hé shēnbàodān.好的。请问,这个需要申报吗?我带了笔记本电脑。
Okay. May I ask, does this need to be declared? I brought a laptop.Hǎo de. Qǐngwèn, zhège xūyào shēnbào ma? Wǒ dài le bǐjìběn diànnǎo.笔记本电脑如果是自用的,不用申报。您有带超过五千美元的现金吗?
If the laptop is for personal use, you don't need to declare it. Are you carrying over 5,000 US dollars in cash?Bǐjìběn diànnǎo rúguǒ shì zìyòng de, bùyòng shēnbào. Nín yǒu dài chāoguò wǔqiān měiyuán de xiànjīn ma?没有。我没有需要申报的东西。
No. I have nothing to declare.Méiyǒu. Wǒ méiyǒu xūyào shēnbào de dōngxi.A little context goes a long way
Chinese customs officers are generally professional and direct. Use 您 (nín, the polite 'you') when speaking to them, and avoid slang or casual language. The green and red channel system is strictly enforced; if you are unsure, it is better to ask than to risk a fine. Declaring items does not automatically mean you will pay duty; many personal items are exempt. Always keep your declaration form until you exit the customs area.
One thing to watch for
Using 宣布 (xuānbù) to mean 'declare' at customs, as in '这个需要宣布吗?'
Try this instead: 宣布 (xuānbù) means 'to announce' publicly, not 'to declare' to customs. The correct term is 申报 (shēnbào). For example, say '这个需要申报吗?' (Zhège xūyào shēnbào ma?) not '这个需要宣布吗?' (Zhège xūyào xuānbù ma?).
