Korean Karaoke: How to Ask for a Key Change

Learn to ask friends or staff to raise or lower the key on a Korean noraebang machine using 키, 올리다, and 내리다.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In a Korean noraebang (karaoke room), songs sometimes feel too high or too low for your voice. The machine has key control buttons, but you need the right words to ask for an adjustment. This lesson teaches beginner-level Korean phrases to request a key change from friends or staff. You will learn the nouns and verbs for raising and lowering the key, and practice two core patterns: '키를 두 개 올려주세요' and '이 노래 키 낮춰줘'. The focus is casual, spoken Korean for a fun night out with friends.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask to raise the key by a specific number of steps.
    • ask to lower the key for a particular song.
    • understand and respond to a friend's request for a key change.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    키를 두 개 올려주세요.

Please raise the key by two.

    ki-reul du gae ollyeo-juseyo

Polite request to staff or a friend. Use any number: 한 개 (one), 세 개 (three).

    이 노래 키 낮춰줘.

Lower the key for this song.

    i norae ki natchwo-jwo

Casual request to a friend. Use when the song is too high.

    키를 한 개 내려주세요.

Please lower the key by one.

    ki-reul han gae naeryeo-juseyo

Polite request. 내리다 means 'to lower'; use for a small adjustment.

    키가 너무 높아.

    The key is too high.

    ki-ga neomu nopa

Casual statement to a friend. Use to explain why you need a change.

    키 조절해 줄 수 있어?

    Can you adjust the key?

    ki jojeolhae jul su isseo?

Casual question to a friend. 조절하다 means 'to adjust'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '키를 [number] 개 올려주세요' means 'Please raise the key by [number].' You can replace 올려주세요 with 내려주세요 to lower it. For example: '키를 세 개 올려주세요' (Please raise the key by three) or '키를 한 개 내려주세요' (Please lower the key by one). The number comes before the counting word 개. In casual speech with friends, you can drop 주세요 and say '키 두 개 올려줘' (Raise the key by two).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when a song is too high or too low for your voice. If you are with friends, casual forms like '이 노래 키 낮춰줘' are fine. If you ask a noraebang staff member, use the polite -주세요 form. You can also state the problem first: '키가 너무 높아' (The key is too high) then add your request. Avoid saying '키를 올려주세요' without a number if you want a specific change; it is vague.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    이 노래 키가 너무 높아.

This song's key is too high.i norae ki-ga neomu nopa
    B

    그럼 키를 두 개 내려줄까?

Then should I lower the key by two?geureom ki-reul du gae naeryeojulkka?
    A

    응, 두 개 내려줘.

Yes, lower it by two.eung, du gae naeryeojwo
    B

    알겠어. 이제 불러봐.

Okay. Now try singing.algesseo. ije bulleobwa

A little context goes a long way

In Korean noraebang, friends often adjust the key themselves using the remote or buttons on the machine. Asking a friend is casual and direct. If you ask staff, use polite language. The word 키 (ki) here means 'key' in music, not 'height'. It is a loanword from English.

    One thing to watch for

Saying '키를 올려주세요' without a number when you want a specific change.

Try this instead: Include the number of steps: '키를 두 개 올려주세요' (Please raise the key by two). If you just say '키를 올려주세요', it means 'Please raise the key' but doesn't specify how much.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a friend to lower the key for this song in casual Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    이 노래 키 낮춰줘.

This uses the casual imperative 낮춰줘. You could also say '이 노래 키 내려줘' with the same meaning.

2How do you politely ask staff to raise the key by three?

    Show a sample answer

    키를 세 개 올려주세요.

This uses the polite request form 올려주세요 with the number 세 개 (three). The number comes before the counting word 개.

3What does '키가 너무 높아' mean?

    Show a sample answer

    The key is too high.

This is a casual statement. You can use it to explain why you need a key change.

    Take this with you

Use '키를 [number] 개 올려주세요/내려주세요' for polite requests, and '이 노래 키 낮춰줘' for casual requests with friends. Always include the number of steps for clarity.
