Korean for Coin Karaoke: Asking to Reduce Microphone Echo

Learn to say microphone echo in Korean and ask a friend or staff to turn it down using 에코, 마이크 and 줄이다 in a coin karaoke room.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In a Korean coin karaoke room (코인노래방), each booth has a touchscreen where you can change the microphone echo, often called 에코. When the echo is too strong, the room sounds washed out and it is hard to hear your own voice. This lesson gives you short, reusable Korean sentences to ask a friend or a staff member to reduce the echo. You will use 반말 with friends and polite speech with staff, and you will name the exact object (마이크) and the exact action (줄이다, to reduce). The phrases are designed for the moment you are already in the booth, standing near the touchscreen, and want a quick fix rather than a long explanation.

    By the end, you can…

    • say microphone echo in Korean using 에코 and 마이크.
    • ask a friend casually to reduce the echo with 에코 좀 줄여줘.
    • ask staff politely to lower the microphone echo.
    • describe the problem by saying the microphone sound echoes too much.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    에코 좀 줄여주세요.

Please reduce the echo a little.

    e-ko jom ju-ryeo-ju-se-yo

Polite request to staff. Use this when you are at the counter or calling staff over. 좀 softens the request.

    마이크 소리가 너무 울려요.

The microphone sound echoes too much.

    ma-i-keu so-ri-ga neo-mu ul-lyeo-yo

Polite way to describe the problem. Useful when staff asks what is wrong.

    에코 좀 줄여줘.

Turn the echo down a bit.

    e-ko jom ju-ryeo-jwo

Casual 반말 to a friend. Use only with close friends in the same booth.

    마이크 에코가 너무 세.

The microphone echo is too strong.

    ma-i-keu e-ko-ga neo-mu se

Casual 반말. 세 is the informal spoken form of 세다, to be strong. Good for telling a friend why you are reaching for the touchscreen.

    터치스크린에서 에코 낮춰줘.

Lower the echo on the touchscreen.

    teo-chi-seu-keu-rin-e-seo e-ko nat-chwo-jwo

Casual instruction to a friend. 낮추다 means to lower, and it fits the touchscreen setting naturally.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 에코 좀 줄여주세요. Here 에코 is the object, 좀 means a little, and 줄여주세요 is a polite request meaning please reduce it. With a close friend, change the ending to 줄여줘: 에코 좀 줄여줘. If you want to name the device, say 마이크 에코, as in 마이크 에코 좀 줄여주세요. The verb 줄이다 means to reduce, and its polite request form is 줄여주세요. You can also use 낮추다, to lower, in 터치스크린에서 에코 낮춰줘.

    When to use it

Use the polite forms with staff: 에코 좀 줄여주세요 and 마이크 소리가 너무 울려요. Staff may be outside the booth, so say the problem first, then the request. Use 반말 with a friend who is already at the touchscreen: 에코 좀 줄여줘 or 마이크 에코가 너무 세. If your friend is holding the touchscreen, 터치스크린에서 에코 낮춰줘 is clear and natural. Avoid saying these to strangers or staff in 반말, because it can sound rude.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

마이크 소리가 너무 울려. 에코 좀 줄여줘.

The microphone sound echoes too much. Turn the echo down a bit.ma-i-keu so-ri-ga neo-mu ul-lyeo. e-ko jom ju-ryeo-jwo
    B

어디 있어? 터치스크린에서 에코 낮추면 돼.

Where is it? You can just lower the echo on the touchscreen.eo-di i-sseo? teo-chi-seu-keu-rin-e-seo e-ko nat-chu-myeon dwae
    A

    여기 에코 숫자가 너무 높아.

    The echo number here is too high.yeo-gi e-ko sut-ja-ga neo-mu no-pa
    B

    그럼 에코 좀 줄여주세요.

Then please reduce the echo a little.geu-reom e-ko jom ju-ryeo-ju-se-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korean coin karaoke rooms, the touchscreen is the normal place to change sound settings, so pointing at it while speaking is common and helpful. Use polite speech with staff even if they look young, because the service relationship calls for it. With friends, 반말 is fine, but switch to polite speech if you are not close. Do not assume staff will change settings remotely; ask at the counter and describe the problem clearly.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 에코를 줄여주세요 to a friend in a casual setting, or using 반말 with staff.

Try this instead: Match the ending to the listener. With a friend, say 에코 좀 줄여줘. With staff, say 에코 좀 줄여주세요. The object particle 를 can be dropped in speech, so 에코 좀 줄여주세요 sounds natural.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely ask staff to reduce the echo?

    Show a sample answer

    에코 좀 줄여주세요.

This uses the polite request ending 주세요 and 좀 to soften it. 에코를 좀 줄여주세요 is also correct but less common in speech.

2How do you tell a friend that the microphone sound echoes too much?

    Show a sample answer

    마이크 소리가 너무 울려.

This uses 반말 울려 and 너무 for too much. With staff, change it to 마이크 소리가 너무 울려요.

3What verb means to reduce, and how do you use it with 에코?

    Show a sample answer

    줄이다; 에코 좀 줄여줘.

줄이다 becomes 줄여줘 in casual speech and 줄여주세요 in polite speech. 낮추다, to lower, is a valid alternative, as in 에코 낮춰줘.

    Take this with you

Use 에코 좀 줄여주세요 with staff and 에코 좀 줄여줘 with friends; if you need to describe the problem, say 마이크 소리가 너무 울려요.
