Learn Korean phrases to ask café staff to pack a slice of cake upright so it survives the bus ride home, including requests for a sturdy box and a separate bag.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

Buying a slice of cake at a Korean café is easy. Getting it home in one piece on a crowded bus is the hard part. In this lesson you will learn how to ask staff to pack your cake upright (세워서) so it does not fall over (넘어지지 않게). You will also learn how to request a sturdy box and a separate bag from hot drinks. These are practical, polite requests you can use at any café counter. The focus is on spoken Korean you can say immediately, not on grammar rules. By the end, you will be able to make a clear, courteous request that protects your dessert on the way home.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask café staff to pack a cake upright for transport.
    • request that the cake not fall over during the bus ride.
    • ask for a sturdy box and a separate bag from hot drinks.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '세워서 포장해 주세요' combines the verb 세우다 (to stand something up) with the connective -서 (so that) and 포장하다 (to pack). It literally means 'pack it so that it stands upright.' You can swap 세워서 with other manner descriptions: 눕혀서 (lying down), 반듯하게 (straight), or 조심해서 (carefully). For example, '조심해서 포장해 주세요' means 'Please pack it carefully.' The polite ending -아/어 주세요 is the standard way to make a request to staff. It is soft but clear, and appropriate for cafés, restaurants, and shops.

    When to use it

Use these phrases at the counter when you pay or when you receive your cake. If the staff is about to put the cake in a bag, say '세워서 포장해 주세요' and gesture with your hand to show upright. If you also have a hot drink, add '뜨거운 음료랑 따로 봉투에 넣어 주세요' so the cake does not get squashed or warmed. If the cake looks delicate, ask for a sturdy box: '튼튼한 상자에 넣어 주세요.' These requests are common and staff will understand. Speak with a friendly tone and a slight smile; politeness in Korean often comes from tone as much as words.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    Got it. I'll put it in a separate bag from the hot drinks.al-get-seum-ni-da. tteu-geo-un eum-ryo-rang tta-ro bong-tu-e neo-eo deu-ril-ge-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korean cafés, staff are used to packing items for takeaway. Requests are usually made with -아/어 주세요, which is polite and direct without being demanding. Using a gentle tone and a slight bow of the head is common. If you are unsure, you can say '죄송하지만' (sorry, but) before your request to soften it. Do not assume staff will automatically pack cake upright; it is normal to ask specifically. Also, bags for hot and cold items are often separated by default, but it is still fine to confirm.

    One thing to watch for

Saying '케이크를 세워 주세요' without 포장해, which can sound like you want the staff to physically stand the cake up on the counter.

Try this instead: Use the full phrase '세워서 포장해 주세요' to make it clear you want it packed upright. For example, '케이크를 세워서 포장해 주세요' is correct and natural.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask staff to pack a cake upright?

    Show a sample answer

    세워서 포장해 주세요.

This is the direct and polite way to request upright packing. You can also add 케이크를 at the beginning for clarity.

2What phrase asks staff to make sure the cake does not fall over?

    Show a sample answer

    넘어지지 않게 해 주세요.

This emphasizes that the cake should not tip over. It is often used together with 세워서 포장해 주세요.

3How do you ask for a separate bag from hot drinks?

    Show a sample answer

뜨거운 음료랑 따로 봉투에 넣어 주세요.

This clearly asks for a separate bag. You can also say 따로 포장해 주세요 if you just want it packed separately.

    Take this with you

To get your cake home safely, say '세워서 포장해 주세요' and '넘어지지 않게 해 주세요.' Add '튼튼한 상자에 넣어 주세요' for a sturdy box and '뜨거운 음료랑 따로 봉투에 넣어 주세요' for a separate bag. These polite requests will help your dessert survive the bus ride.
