Korean Café Cake Writing: Ask for a Message and Check Spacing

Learn to order a short message piped on a cake in Korean. Use 글씨, 써 주세요, and 이 글자 다 들어가요? to confirm length and ask for color.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Friends talking over coffee in a city café

When you order a cake at a Korean café, you may want a short message written on top. The key is to give the exact text, ask the staff to write it, and confirm that all characters will fit. In this lesson, you will learn three useful patterns: how to say the word for writing (글씨), how to request 'please write' (써 주세요), and how to check if all letters fit (이 글자 다 들어가요?). You will also learn to ask for a specific color. This is practical, polite Korean for a real situation, not a general vocabulary list.

    By the end, you can…

    • give a short message and ask staff to write it on a cake.
    • ask whether all characters will fit on the cake.
    • request a specific icing color for the writing.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    글씨

    writing, letters (on a surface)

    geul-ssi

Use this noun when talking about the written message on the cake. It refers to the letters or characters themselves, not the act of writing.

    써 주세요

    Please write it (for me)

    sseo ju-se-yo

Polite request. Use after stating the message. It means 'please write' and is appropriate when asking staff to pipe the letters.

    이 글자 다 들어가요?

    Do all these characters fit?

    i geul-ja da deu-reo-ga-yo?

Use this to confirm that the entire message will fit on the cake. It literally asks if all letters go in.

    케이크에 써 주세요.

Please write it on the cake.

    ke-i-keu-e sseo ju-se-yo

A full sentence combining the location (케이크에) and the request. Use it after saying the message.

    색은 무슨 색으로 해 주세요?

What color would you like it done in?

    sae-geun mu-seun saek-eu-ro hae ju-se-yo?

This is what staff might ask you. You can answer with a color, for example: 빨간색으로 해 주세요 (Please do it in red).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To request writing, use the pattern [message] + 써 주세요. For example, if you want 'Happy Birthday' written, you can say: 해피 버스데이 써 주세요. If you want to specify where, add 에: 케이크에 써 주세요. The verb 쓰다 means 'to write', and 써 주세요 is a polite request form. You can also use the noun 글씨 to talk about the writing itself: 글씨를 예쁘게 써 주세요 (Please write the letters nicely).

    When to use it

Use these phrases when ordering a cake with a message. First, state the exact text you want, then say 써 주세요. After that, ask 이 글자 다 들어가요? to check if it fits. If the staff asks about color, you can say [color]으로 해 주세요. For example: 파란색으로 해 주세요 (Please do it in blue). This sequence helps you communicate clearly without assuming the café's policies.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

안녕하세요. 케이크에 글씨를 써 주실 수 있어요?

Hello. Can you write letters on the cake?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo. ke-i-keu-e geul-ssi-reul sseo ju-sil su i-sseo-yo?
    B

네, 가능해요. 어떤 글씨를 써 드릴까요?

    Yes, it's possible. What writing shall I do for you?ne, ga-neung-hae-yo. eo-tteon geul-ssi-reul sseo deu-ril-kka-yo?
    A

생일 축하해, 이렇게 써 주세요. 이 글자 다 들어가요?

Please write 'Happy Birthday' like this. Do all these characters fit?saeng-il chu-ka-hae, i-reo-ke sseo ju-se-yo. i geul-ja da deu-reo-ga-yo?
    B

네, 다 들어가요. 색은 무슨 색으로 해 드릴까요?

Yes, they all fit. What color shall I do for you?ne, da deu-reo-ga-yo. sae-geun mu-seun saek-eu-ro hae deu-ril-kka-yo?

A little context goes a long way

In Korean cafés, staff are usually polite and helpful. When making a special request like cake writing, it is common to use polite language (존댓말). The phrase 써 주세요 is a polite request, but if you want to be extra polite, you can use 써 주시겠어요? (sseo ju-si-ge-sseo-yo?). Also, when asking about color, you can simply say the color word plus 으로 해 주세요. For example, 빨간색으로 해 주세요. Avoid assuming that all cafés offer this service; it is best to ask first with a question like 글씨 써 주실 수 있어요?

    One thing to watch for

Using 써 주세요 without stating the message first, or using the wrong verb for 'write' like 적어 주세요.

Try this instead: State the message first, then use 써 주세요. For example: 생일 축하해 써 주세요. 적어 주세요 means 'please write down' and is used for writing on paper, not piping on a cake. For cake writing, use 써 주세요.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Please write it on the cake' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    케이크에 써 주세요.

This uses the location marker 에 and the polite request 써 주세요. You can also say 케이크에 글씨를 써 주세요, which is equally correct.

2What phrase checks if all characters fit?

    Show a sample answer

    이 글자 다 들어가요?

This literally asks if all letters go in. You can also say 이 글씨 다 들어가요? using 글씨 instead of 글자; both are acceptable.

3How do you ask for red writing?

    Show a sample answer

    빨간색으로 해 주세요.

This means 'Please do it in red.' You can replace 빨간색 with other colors, such as 파란색 (blue) or 검은색 (black).

    Take this with you

To order cake writing in Korean, state your message, add 써 주세요, then ask 이 글자 다 들어가요? to confirm it fits. For color, say [color]으로 해 주세요. Keep it polite and clear.
