Korean for Oversized Parcels: Asking a Courier to Leave a Big Item by the Door or Stairs

Learn polite Korean patterns to ask a courier to leave a large parcel outside the parcel box, such as by the door or near the stairs, with practical dialogue and vocabulary.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When a bulky parcel arrives at a Korean apartment building, it often does not fit in the shared 택배함 (parcel box). You may need to speak with the courier and ask them to leave it in a safe spot, such as 문 앞 (in front of the door) or 계단 (the stairs). This lesson gives you polite, reusable Korean sentences for that exact situation. You will practice the key pattern 문 앞에 놓아주세요 and the conditional pattern 택배함에 안 들어가면 계단에 놓아주세요. The focus is on clear, respectful requests that work in narrow apartment hallways.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a courier to leave a large parcel in front of my door.
    • explain that the parcel does not fit in the parcel box and suggest an alternative spot.
    • use polite Korean request forms with 놓아주세요.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    It is a large item.

    keun ji-mi-e-yo

Use this to describe the parcel when the courier calls or when you meet them.

It does not fit in the parcel box.

    taek-bae-ha-me an deu-reo-ga-yo

A simple statement to explain the problem before making a request.

Please leave it in front of the door.

    mun a-pe no-a-ju-se-yo

The main polite request. 문 앞 means the area right outside your apartment door.

If it does not fit in the parcel box, please leave it by the stairs.

    taek-bae-ha-me an deu-reo-ga-myeon gye-da-ne no-a-ju-se-yo

A conditional request. Use it when you want to give the courier a backup spot.

Please leave it near the stairs.

    gye-dan jjo-ge no-a-ju-se-yo

계단 쪽 is a little softer than just 계단 and means the area around the stairs.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 문 앞에 놓아주세요 combines a place (문 앞에, 'in front of the door') with the polite request 놓아주세요 ('please put/leave it'). You can swap the place to fit the situation: 계단에 놓아주세요 (please leave it by the stairs), 현관 앞에 놓아주세요 (please leave it in front of the entrance). To add a condition, use -면: 택배함에 안 들어가면 문 앞에 놓아주세요 ('if it does not fit in the parcel box, please leave it in front of the door'). This is a practical, respectful way to negotiate placement without sounding demanding.

    When to use it

Use these sentences when the courier calls or messages you and you know the parcel is too big for the shared 택배함. Start with a short explanation: 큰 짐이에요. Then give your request: 문 앞에 놓아주세요. If you are not sure whether it fits, use the conditional: 택배함에 안 들어가면 계단에 놓아주세요. In Korean apartment buildings, hallways can be narrow, so choose a spot that does not block the walkway. If you want to ask a question instead of giving a direct request, you can say ('Could you leave it in front of the door?').

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Hello, your parcel has arrived.yeo-bo-se-yo, taek-bae wa-nneun-de-yo
    B

Oh, okay. Is it a large item? Does it fit in the parcel box?a, ne. keun ji-mi-e-yo? taek-bae-ha-me deu-reo-ga-yo?
    A

Yes, it is a bit big. It does not fit in the parcel box.ne, jom keo-yo. taek-bae-ha-me an deu-reo-ga-yo
    B

Then please leave it in front of the door. Or please leave it near the stairs.geu-reom mun a-pe no-a-ju-se-yo. a-ni-myeon gye-dan jjo-ge no-a-ju-se-yo

A little context goes a long way

In Korean apartment buildings, the shared parcel box is convenient but not always large enough. Couriers often call before leaving a big item. A polite request with 놓아주세요 is normal and appreciated. Avoid blocking the hallway or stairs, as neighbors use them. If you are unsure about the building's rules, you can ask the courier or the management office. Do not assume a specific delivery company's policy; ask what is possible in your building.

    One thing to watch for

Using the plain form 놓아 instead of the polite request 놓아주세요.

Try this instead: For a polite request to a courier, use 놓아주세요. For example, 문 앞에 놓아주세요 is polite and natural. The plain form 문 앞에 놓아 can sound like a command or be too casual with a stranger.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you politely ask a courier to leave a parcel in front of your door?

    Show a sample answer

This uses the place 문 앞에 plus the polite request 놓아주세요. You can also say 문 앞에 놓아주실 수 있어요? for a slightly softer question.

2What sentence explains that the parcel does not fit in the parcel box?

    Show a sample answer

This states the problem clearly. You can also say 택배함에 안 들어가는데요 to soften it and lead into a request.

3How do you give a conditional instruction: if it does not fit in the parcel box, leave it by the stairs?

    Show a sample answer

The -면 ending makes the condition. 계단에 놓아주세요 is the request. 계단 쪽에 is also fine and slightly softer.

    Take this with you

For an oversized parcel, explain the problem with 큰 짐이에요 or 택배함에 안 들어가요, then make a polite request with 문 앞에 놓아주세요 or 계단에 놓아주세요. Keep the hallway clear and use the conditional pattern when you are not sure it fits.
