Korean for Tufting: Asking for More Yarn When a Color Runs Out

Learn to say '이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요' and '같은 색 더 있어요?' to ask for more yarn in a Korean tufting workshop.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

You're in a Korean tufting workshop, halfway through a rug, and your main color runs out. You need to get a staff member's attention and ask for more yarn—politely, clearly, and without switching to English. This lesson gives you the exact Korean phrases for that moment. You'll learn three key words: 실 (sil, yarn), 색 (saek, color), and 부족 (bujok, shortage/lack). Then you'll practice two patterns: 이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요 (i saek siri da tteoreojeosseoyo) to state the problem, and 같은 색 더 있어요? (gateun saek deo isseoyo?) to ask for more. The register is polite informal (해요체), which is appropriate for speaking to workshop staff you don't know well. The dialogue models a realistic exchange from problem to solution. By the end, you'll be able to handle a yarn shortage without breaking your creative flow.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a specific yarn color has run out using 이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요.
    • ask a staff member for more of the same color using 같은 색 더 있어요?
    • use the words 실, 색, and 부족 in a tufting context.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요.

This color of yarn has run out.

    i saek siri da tteoreojeosseoyo

Use when you notice the yarn for your current color is gone. 이 색 means 'this color'; 실이 is the subject form of 실 (yarn); 다 떨어졌어요 means 'has completely run out.'

    같은 색 더 있어요?

Do you have more of the same color?

    gateun saek deo isseoyo?

A polite question to ask staff if they have additional yarn in the same color. 같은 색 means 'same color'; 더 means 'more'; 있어요? is the polite informal question form of 'to exist/have.'

    실이 부족해요.

The yarn is insufficient / I don't have enough yarn.

    siri bujokhaeyo

Use this when you want to state that the amount of yarn is not enough, without specifying a color. 부족해요 comes from 부족 (shortage) and means 'is lacking/insufficient.'

    다른 색으로 주세요.

Please give me a different color.

    dareun saekeuro juseyo

If the same color is unavailable, you can ask for a different color. 다른 색으로 means 'with a different color'; 주세요 means 'please give.'

    이 실, 어디에 있어요?

    Where is this yarn?

    i sil, eodie isseoyo?

Ask where to find the yarn yourself. 이 실 means 'this yarn'; 어디에 있어요? means 'where is it?' Useful if you prefer to look for it.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요' uses the verb 떨어지다 (to run out, to fall) in the past tense. '다' means 'completely.' You can swap 이 색 for other colors: 빨간 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요 (The red yarn has run out). To ask for more, use '같은 색 더 있어요?' The word 더 (more) is essential. You can also say '같은 색 실 더 있어요?' adding 실 for clarity. If you need to state a general shortage, use '실이 부족해요.' These patterns are polite informal (해요체), suitable for staff.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you are in a tufting workshop and your yarn runs out. First, get a staff member's attention politely: 저기요 (jeogiyo, excuse me). Then say '이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요.' If they look unsure, ask '같은 색 더 있어요?' If they say no, you can ask '다른 색으로 주세요.' Avoid using these phrases with close friends in a casual setting; for that, you could drop 요. But with staff, keep the 요 for politeness.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    저기요, 이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요.

Excuse me, this color of yarn has run out.jeogiyo, i saek siri da tteoreojeosseoyo
    B

    아, 네. 잠시만 기다려 주세요.

Oh, I see. Please wait a moment.a, ne. jamsiman gidaryeo juseyo
    A

    네, 여기 있습니다.

    Here you are.ne, yeogi itseumnida
    B

    감사합니다.

    Thank you.gamsahamnida

A little context goes a long way

In Korean workshops, staff are usually addressed with polite informal (해요체) or formal polite (합니다체). Using 해요체 is safe and friendly. If you are older than the staff or a regular customer, you might use casual speech, but it's better to err on the polite side. Also, saying 저기요 to get attention is common and not rude. Avoid saying '야' (ya) to staff, which is only for close friends or children.

    One thing to watch for

Saying '이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요' to mean 'I ran out of this color' but using it when you actually mean 'I need more yarn' without stating the problem first.

Try this instead: It's fine to state the problem first, but if you want to directly ask for more, use '같은 색 더 있어요?' or '이 색 실 더 주세요.' For example, '이 색 실이 부족해요. 더 주세요.' combines both.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The yarn is insufficient' in Korean?

    Show a sample answer

    실이 부족해요.

This uses 실 (yarn) with the subject marker 이 and 부족해요 (is insufficient). You could also say 실이 모자라요, which is a valid alternative.

2What would you say to ask for more of the same color?

    Show a sample answer

    같은 색 더 있어요?

This is a polite question. You can add 실 for clarity: 같은 색 실 더 있어요? Both are correct.

3If the same color is not available, how do you ask for a different color?

    Show a sample answer

    다른 색으로 주세요.

This means 'Please give me a different color.' You could also say 다른 색 있어요? (Do you have a different color?) depending on whether you want to ask or request.

    Take this with you

When your yarn runs out in a Korean tufting workshop, say '이 색 실이 다 떨어졌어요' to explain the problem, then '같은 색 더 있어요?' to ask for more. Keep it polite with 해요체, and use 저기요 to get attention.
