Korean for Pottery: Describing an Uneven Clay Wall and Asking for Help
Learn polite Korean to say a hand-built mug wall is too thick or uneven, and ask a studio teacher how to even it out.

When you hand-build a mug, the wall can end up thicker on one side or lumpy where two coils meet. In a Korean pottery studio, you can point at the spot and say 벽이 너무 두꺼워요 (byeogi neomu dukkeowoyo) — "the wall is too thick." If the surface is bumpy rather than thick, say 벽이 고르지 않아요 (byeogi goreuji anayo) — "the wall isn't even." This lesson gives you polite informal phrases to describe the problem and ask a teacher or staff member for help, without guessing at studio rules or prices.
By the end, you can…
- say that the wall of my clay piece is too thick or not even.
- ask how to press or flatten the wall evenly.
- ask a teacher to check the wall and show me the motion.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

벽이 너무 두꺼워요.
The wall is too thick.
byeo-gi neo-mu duk-kkeo-wo-yo
Point to the thick part of the mug wall. Polite informal, fine with a teacher you see regularly.
벽이 고르지 않아요.
The wall isn't even.
byeo-gi go-reu-ji a-na-yo
Use for a bumpy or lopsided surface, not necessarily thick. 고르지 않다 is the negative form of 고르다.
고르게 펴려면 어떻게 해요?
How do I flatten it evenly?
go-reu-ge pyeo-ryeo-myeon eo-tteo-ke hae-yo
Ask this while holding the piece or pointing at the uneven area.
이 부분 좀 봐 주세요.
Please look at this part.
i bu-bun jom bwa ju-se-yo
Polite request. Use it to invite the teacher to inspect the wall before you change it.
두께를 다시 맞춰 볼게요.
I'll try to adjust the thickness again.
du-kke-reul da-si mat-chwo bol-ge-yo
Say this after getting advice, to show you understood and will try again.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern 벽이 + adjective + 요 describes the wall. 벽이 너무 두꺼워요 means "the wall is too thick." 벽이 고르지 않아요 means "the wall is not even." To ask for a method, use 고르게 펴려면 어떻게 해요? — literally "if I intend to flatten it evenly, how do I do it?" You can swap the verb: 고르게 만들려면 어떻게 해요? ("how do I make it even?") or 두께를 맞추려면 어떻게 해요? ("how do I adjust the thickness?").
When to use it
Use these lines when you are at the hand-building table and the mug wall feels thick or bumpy. Say 벽이 너무 두꺼워요 when one side is clearly heavier. Say 벽이 고르지 않아요 when the surface is uneven but not necessarily thick. If you want the teacher to check first, say 이 부분 좀 봐 주세요. Then ask 고르게 펴려면 어떻게 해요? and watch the hand motion. Avoid announcing a finished piece; these are working-stage comments.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
저기요, 이 컵 벽이 너무 두꺼워요.

In Korean studios, polite informal speech with 요 is normal between an adult learner and a teacher you see regularly. If the teacher is much older or you are new, use the polite request form 주세요 and keep comments brief. Staff may demonstrate with their hands rather than give a long explanation, so watch the motion and repeat it.
One thing to watch for
Saying 벽이 두꺼워요 for a surface that is only bumpy.
Try this instead: 두껍다 means thick, not uneven. For a bumpy or lopsided wall, say 벽이 고르지 않아요. If it is both thick and uneven, you can say 벽이 두껍고 고르지 않아요.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

Show a sample answer
고르게 펴려면 어떻게 해요?
고르게 means evenly, 펴려면 means if I intend to flatten, and 어떻게 해요 asks how to do it. 고르게 만들려면 어떻게 해요? is also acceptable if you mean making it even rather than pressing it flat.
3What should you say to ask the teacher to check the uneven spot?
