    Checking available voices…

    이 소포에 보험을 들 수 있나요?

    Can I insure this package?

    i sopo-e boheom-eul deul su innayo?

Use at the post office or with a courier. '보험을 들다' is the standard verb for 'to take out insurance'.

    보험료는 얼마인가요?

How much is the insurance premium?

    boheomnyo-neun eolma-ingayo?

Ask this after confirming that insurance is available. '보험료' means insurance premium.

    최대 보상 금액은 얼마예요?

What is the maximum coverage amount?

    choedae bosang geumaek-eun eolmayeyo?

Use '최대 보상 금액' to ask about the maximum compensation. '보상' means compensation.

이 물건의 가치는 얼마로 신고해야 하나요?

How much should I declare the value of this item?

    i mulgeon-ui gachi-neun eolma-ro singohae-ya hanayo?

When insuring, you must declare the value. '신고하다' means to declare.

보험에 가입하면 파손 시 보상받을 수 있나요?

If I take out insurance, can I get compensation for damage?

boheom-e gaiphamyeon pason si bosangbadeul su innayo?

Ask about specific coverage like damage. '파손' means damage, '보상받다' means to receive compensation.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask if you can do something, use the pattern '-(으)ㄹ 수 있나요?' after a verb stem. For example, '보험을 들다' (to take out insurance) becomes '보험을 들 수 있나요?' (Can I take out insurance?). Similarly, '보상받다' (to receive compensation) becomes '보상받을 수 있나요?' (Can I receive compensation?). This pattern is polite and common in service interactions. You can also use '-(으)ㄹ 수 있어요?' in less formal situations.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you are at a post office or a courier office and want to insure a package. Start with '이 소포에 보험을 들 수 있나요?' to ask if insurance is possible. If the answer is yes, follow up with '보험료는 얼마인가요?' to ask the cost. Then ask about coverage: '최대 보상 금액은 얼마예요?' and '파손 시 보상받을 수 있나요?'. Always be ready to declare the value of your item with '이 물건의 가치는 얼마로 신고해야 하나요?'.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

안녕하세요, 이 소포를 미국으로 보내려고 하는데요. 보험을 들 수 있나요?

Hello, I'd like to send this package to the US. Can I insure it?annyeonghaseyo, i sopo-reul miguk-euro bonaeryeogo haneundeyo. boheom-eul deul su innayo?

    A

    B

최대 50만 원까지 보상해 드립니다. 파손이나 분실 시 보상받을 수 있습니다.

We cover up to 500,000 won. You can receive compensation for damage or loss.choedae osipman won-kkaji bosanghae deurimnida. pasonina bunsil si bosangbadeul su itseumnida.

A little context goes a long way

In Korea, postal insurance (우체국 보험) is offered by Korea Post. For international packages, insurance may be limited. It's common to declare the actual value. If you underdeclare to save on premium, you may receive less compensation. Always keep receipts. The term '보험' is used for both postal and private insurance, but for packages, '소포 보험' is clear.

    One thing to watch for

Using '보험을 사다' (to buy insurance) instead of '보험을 들다'.

Try this instead: '보험을 들다' is the correct collocation for taking out insurance. '보험을 사다' sounds unnatural. For example, say '보험을 들 수 있나요?' not '보험을 살 수 있나요?'.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
