Korean for Customs: Asking 'Do I Need to Declare This?' and Reading Declaration Forms

Learn intermediate Korean phrases for customs declarations: ask whether an item must be declared, understand 신고서 form fields, and answer officers politely.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

At customs, the most useful Korean skill is not vocabulary lists but knowing how to ask a precise question and understand the answer. In this lesson you will learn to say 'Do I need to declare this?' naturally, ask where the declaration form is, and read the key fields on a Korean customs declaration form (신고서). You will also practice polite, indirect phrasing that fits a formal government setting, where blunt statements can sound rude. The focus is spoken customs situations plus enough form vocabulary to fill in the paperwork correctly.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a specific item needs to be declared.
    • ask where to get a customs declaration form and how to fill it in.
    • understand and answer basic questions about the purpose of my visit and the value of goods.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    이거 신고해야 돼요?

Do I need to declare this?

    i-geo sin-go-hae-ya dwae-yo?

The core question for a single item you are holding or pointing to. Use it with a customs officer or at a help desk.

    신고서 어디서 받아요?

Where do I get a declaration form?

    sin-go-seo eo-di-seo ba-da-yo?

Ask this near the arrival hall or at an information desk. 신고서 means the written declaration form.

    이건 신고 대상인가요?

    Is this subject to declaration?

    i-geon sin-go dae-sang-in-ga-yo?

A slightly more formal version. Useful when you want to confirm an official category rather than a personal opinion.

    신고할 게 없어요.

    I have nothing to declare.

    sin-go-hal ge eop-sseo-yo.

A standard answer at the declaration checkpoint. Say it clearly and calmly.

이 물품의 가액은 얼마로 적어야 해요?

What value should I write for this item?

    i mul-pum-ui ga-aek-eun eol-ma-ro jeo-geo-ya hae-yo?

Use this when filling out the form and you are unsure whether to write the purchase price or an estimated value.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern -아/어야 돼요 expresses obligation: 'must' or 'need to'. Attach it to the verb stem: 신고하다 (to declare) becomes 신고해야 돼요. To ask a yes/no question, simply raise your intonation: 이거 신고해야 돼요? You can also use -아/어야 하나요? for a slightly softer, more formal question: 이거 신고해야 하나요? Both are correct; the second sounds more careful in official settings.

    When to use it

Use these questions before you reach the officer, while you still have time to move items or fill out a form. If you are unsure about food, medicine, or large amounts of cash, ask 이거 신고해야 돼요? and show the item. If the officer asks you a question, answer with a full polite sentence rather than just 'yes' or 'no': 네, 신고할 게 없어요. This keeps the exchange clear and respectful.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    안녕하세요. 신고할 물품 있으세요?

Hello. Do you have any items to declare?an-nyeong-ha-se-yo. sin-go-hal mul-pum i-sseu-se-yo?
    B

이거 신고해야 돼요? 선물로 받은 거예요.

    Do I need to declare this? It was a gift.i-geo sin-go-hae-ya dwae-yo? seon-mul-lo ba-deun geo-ye-yo.
    A

가액이 얼마인지 아세요? 신고서에 적어 주세요.

Do you know the value? Please write it on the declaration form.ga-aek-i eol-ma-in-ji a-se-yo? sin-go-seo-e jeo-geo ju-se-yo.
    B

    네, 신고서 어디서 받아요?

    Yes, where do I get a declaration form?ne, sin-go-seo eo-di-seo ba-da-yo?

A little context goes a long way

Korean customs interactions are formal and efficient. Use polite -요 endings or the honorific -세요 form with officers, and avoid casual speech even if the officer seems friendly. Officers may speak quickly and use official terms; it is fine to say 다시 한번 말씀해 주세요 (please say that again). Keep your answers short and factual, and have your passport and form ready.

    One thing to watch for

Using the casual question 이거 신고해야 돼? with a customs officer.

Try this instead: Add the polite -요 ending: 이거 신고해야 돼요? In official settings, the casual form can sound abrupt or disrespectful. If you want to be extra polite, use 이거 신고해야 하나요?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you ask a customs officer whether a bottle of alcohol needs to be declared?

    Show a sample answer

    이거 신고해야 돼요?

This is the standard polite question for a single item. You could also say 이건 신고 대상인가요? for a more formal tone.

2You cannot find the declaration form. What do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    신고서 어디서 받아요?

This asks where to receive the form. At an information desk you could also say 신고서 어디 있어요? (Where is the declaration form?).

3The officer asks if you have anything to declare and you do not. What is a polite answer?

    Show a sample answer

    신고할 게 없어요.

This means 'I have nothing to declare.' Adding 네 at the start (네, 신고할 게 없어요) sounds even more cooperative.

    Take this with you

Ask 이거 신고해야 돼요? for a specific item, use 신고서 for the form, and keep your answers polite with -요 endings. When in doubt, ask before you reach the officer.
