How to Say "I Need an Envelope" in Korean and Ask for the Right Size
Learn to say you need an envelope in Korean, ask for different sizes, and buy one politely at a stationery store or post office counter.

Buying an envelope in Korea is simple once you know two things: how to say you need one, and how to ask for a size. The key verb is 필요하다 (piryohada, "to be needed"), and the key noun is 봉투 (bongtu, "envelope"). In this lesson you will build the sentence 봉투가 필요해요 (bongtuga piryohaeyo, "I need an envelope"), ask for larger or smaller sizes, and handle a short exchange at a store counter. All examples use Hangul with Revised Romanization so you can read and say them accurately.
By the end, you can…
- say "I need an envelope" in polite Korean.
- ask for a bigger, smaller, or specific envelope size.
- complete a short buying exchange at a stationery store or post office.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

봉투가 필요해요.
I need an envelope.
bong-tu-ga pi-ryo-hae-yo
The most useful general sentence. Use it when you simply need one envelope or envelopes in general.
봉투 하나 주세요.
Please give me one envelope.
bong-tu ha-na ju-se-yo
Use at a counter when you want exactly one envelope. 하나 (hana) is the native Korean numeral 'one' used here to count items.
더 큰 봉투 있어요?
Do you have a bigger envelope?
deo keun bong-tu i-sseo-yo
Use 더 (deo, "more") plus 큰 (keun, "big") to ask for a larger size.
더 작은 봉투 있어요?
Do you have a smaller envelope?
deo ja-geun bong-tu i-sseo-yo
The opposite request. 작은 (jageun) means "small."
편지 봉투예요?
Is it a letter envelope?
pyeon-ji bong-tu-ye-yo
Useful when you want to confirm the type, for example a letter envelope rather than a money envelope (돈 봉투, don bongtu).
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The pattern [noun] + 이/가 필요해요 ([noun] + i/ga piryohaeyo) means "I need [noun]." Use 이 (i) after a consonant and 가 (ga) after a vowel. 봉투 ends in a vowel, so say 봉투가 필요해요 (bongtuga piryohaeyo). If you need several, you can still use the same sentence: 봉투가 필요해요 can mean "I need envelopes" in context. To be specific, add a number: 봉투 두 장이 필요해요 (bongtu du jangi piryohaeyo, "I need two envelopes").
When to use it
Use 봉투가 필요해요 when explaining your need, and 봉투 주세요 (bongtu juseyo, "please give me an envelope") when asking a staff member directly. At a post office, you can say 편지 봉투가 필요해요 (pyeonji bongtuga piryohaeyo, "I need a letter envelope"). If you are unsure of the size, ask 더 큰 봉투 있어요? (deo keun bongtu isseoyo?) or 더 작은 봉투 있어요? (deo jageun bongtu isseoyo?). These are polite and natural in stores.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

In Korean stores and post offices, a short polite request with 주세요 (juseyo) is normal and friendly. You do not need extra honorific titles with staff. If you want to be especially polite to an older clerk, you can add 죄송하지만 (joesonghajiman, "sorry, but") before a request, but it is not required for a simple purchase.
One thing to watch for
Saying 봉투를 필요해요 (bongtureul piryohaeyo) because English "need" looks like a direct object.
Try this instead: 필요하다 does not take the object particle 를 (reul). Use the subject particle 이/가: 봉투가 필요해요 (bongtuga piryohaeyo). If you want an object-style sentence, use a different verb: 봉투를 원해요 (bongtureul wonhaeyo, "I want an envelope").
