Japanese for Rescheduling a Parcel a Second Time: Apologising Without Sounding Careless

Learn apologetic-polite Japanese to call a delivery company again after missing a redelivery, confirm a new time window, and repeat your address back clearly.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

Missing a parcel redelivery once is easy to explain. Missing it twice means you need to call again in a way that sounds responsible rather than careless. In Japanese, this is done less by long excuses and more by choosing the right apologetic forms, naming the specific action you want repeated, and confirming the new details before you hang up. This lesson gives you three reusable sentences, the 〜てしまって pattern for owning a small mistake, and a short phone dialogue in which you confirm the new delivery window and repeat your address back to the staff member.

    By the end, you can…

    • apologise for missing a redelivery a second time without sounding careless.
    • ask a delivery company to arrange the delivery once more.
    • state clearly that I will be at home this time.
    • confirm a new time window and repeat my address back on the phone.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

I'm sorry, I missed it again while I was out.

    Su-mi-ma-sen, ma-ta fu-zai ni shi-te shi-mat-te.

Opening line on the phone. また signals the repeat, and 〜てしまって frames your absence as a small mistake you regret. Keep your tone calm and slightly lowered.

Could I ask you to do it once more?

    Mō i-chi-do o-ne-gai de-ki-ma-su ka.

Use this to request a second redelivery arrangement. もう一度 refers to the action of arranging delivery again, not to the parcel itself.

This time I will be at home.

    Kon-do wa zai-taku shi-te i-ma-su.

今度は contrasts this attempt with the previous failures. 在宅しています is the standard polite way to say you are at home and available to receive the parcel.

I'd like to request a redelivery, if possible.

    Sai-hai-tatsu o o-ne-gai shi-tai no de-su ga.

A polite, slightly indirect way to state your request. The final が softens it and invites the staff member to respond. 再配達 is the specific term for a repeated delivery attempt.

What time does the delivery window run from and to?

    Hai-tatsu ji-kan-tai wa nan-ji ka-ra nan-ji ma-de de-su ka.

Use this to ask about the available time slots. 時間帯 means a time window, not a single exact time, so it fits delivery scheduling.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 〜てしまって attaches to a verb to show that an action happened unintentionally or with a regrettable result. In this lesson it lets you own the mistake without over-apologising: また不在にしてしまって (I ended up being out again). You can also say (I ended up falling asleep). Note that 気づかなくてしまって is not natural; prefer 気づかなくて (I didn't notice). The form is casual in grammar but polite in effect when followed by すみません. It keeps the focus on your action, not on blaming the delivery company.

    When to use it

Use this register when you call a delivery company after a second missed attempt. After the staff member offers a new window, confirm it with 今度は在宅しています and repeat the address back. Avoid saying 大丈夫です alone, because it can sound as if you are dismissing the problem. Instead, confirm the specific window and address so the staff member knows the arrangement is clear.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    Thank you for calling. How can I help you?O-de-n-wa a-ri-ga-tō go-zai-ma-su. Go-yō-ken o o-u-ka-gai shi-ma-su.
    B

    I'm sorry, I missed it again. I'd like to request a redelivery.Su-mi-ma-sen, ma-ta fu-zai ni shi-te shi-mat-te. Sai-hai-tatsu o o-ne-gai shi-tai no de-su ga.
    A

Certainly. How about tomorrow morning, or from two to four in the afternoon?Ka-shi-ko-ma-ri-ma-shi-ta. A-su no go-zen-chū ka, go-go ni-ji ka-ra yo-ji wa i-ka-ga de-su ka.
    B

    Then please make it from two to four in the afternoon. This time I will be at home. My address is Nishi-Shinjuku 1-chome, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo.De-wa, go-go ni-ji ka-ra yo-ji de o-ne-gai shi-ma-su. Kon-do wa zai-taku shi-te i-ma-su. Jū-sho wa Tō-kyō-to Shin-juku-ku Nishi-Shin-juku i-ttō-me de-su.

A little context goes a long way

On Japanese phone calls, apologising first and then stating your request is normal and does not mean you are admitting fault in a serious way. A brief すみません followed by the specific request is usually enough. Repeating the address and time window back is not seen as distrust; it is a standard confirmation step that prevents another failed delivery. Keep your voice even and avoid long explanations, which can sound like excuses.

    One thing to watch for

Saying また遅れました to mean 'I was out again.'

Try this instead: 遅れました means 'I was late,' not 'I was out.' For a missed delivery because you were not home, use また不在にしてしまって or また留守にしてしまって.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You missed the redelivery again and want to ask for another arrangement. What is a natural apologetic-polite opening?

    Show a sample answer

This combines an apology with 〜てしまって and a clear request. 再配達をお願いしたいのですが is also acceptable and slightly more formal.

How do you confirm that you will be home this time?

    Show a sample answer

今度は contrasts this attempt with earlier failures, and repeating the window confirms the arrangement. You could also say その時間は家にいます, which is more casual but still clear.

3Why is 大丈夫です risky as a final reply on this call?

    Show a sample answer

It can sound like you are dismissing the problem or ending the topic without confirming the new window or address.

A safer close is to repeat the time window and address, for example This shows you are taking the arrangement seriously.

    Take this with you

Apologise briefly with すみません、また不在にしてしまって, request the action again with もう一度お願いできますか, and close by confirming 今度は在宅しています plus the new window and your address.
