Japanese for Missing Parcels: Ask If It Was Left with a Neighbor

Learn polite Japanese to ask a carrier or neighbor whether your parcel was left next door, using 〜てもらえますか and 〜ましたか.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

Your tracking says the parcel was delivered, but there is nothing at your door. Before you panic, you need to ask two different people in two different ways. First, contact the carrier and ask if they left it with a neighbor. Then, if needed, knock on your neighbor's door and ask if they received it. This lesson gives you the exact polite Japanese for both situations. You will learn how to request that a parcel be left with the neighbor (隣の部屋に預けてもらえますか), how to refer to the neighbor (お隣さん), how to talk about proxy receipt (代理受け取り), and how to confirm whether they kept it (預かりましたか). The register is polite and slightly tentative, which suits a situation where you are asking a favor or checking a fact without sounding accusatory.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a delivery company whether my parcel was left with a neighbor.
    • politely ask a neighbor if they received a parcel on my behalf.
    • use 〜てもらえますか for requests and 〜ましたか for confirmation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    荷物が届いているか確認してもらえますか。

Could you check whether my parcel has arrived?

Nimotsu ga todoite iru ka kakunin shite moraemasu ka.

Use this when calling the carrier. It asks them to check the delivery status without demanding.

    隣の人に預けてもらえますか。

Could you leave it with the neighbor?

Tonari no hito ni azukete moraemasu ka.

A polite request to the carrier to leave the parcel with a neighbor. 預ける means to leave something in someone's care. 隣の部屋 would mean 'the next room', so use 隣の人 for 'the neighbor'.

    お隣さんが代理で受け取りましたか。

Did the neighbor accept it on my behalf?

Otonari-san ga dairi de uketorimashita ka.

Ask the carrier or the neighbor. 代理で受け取る means to receive on someone's behalf. お隣さん is a friendly way to say 'neighbor'.

    私の荷物を預かっていますか。

    Are you keeping my parcel?

Watashi no nimotsu o azukatte imasu ka.

Ask the neighbor directly. 預かっていますか asks whether they are currently holding it; 預かりましたか asks whether they took it in.

    もし預かっていたら、教えてもらえますか。

If you have it, could you let me know?

Moshi azukatte itara, oshiete moraemasu ka.

A tentative way to ask a neighbor, softening the request with もし〜たら.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 〜てもらえますか asks someone to do something for you politely. Attach it to the て-form of a verb. For example, 預ける (to leave in someone's care) becomes 預けて, then 預けてもらえますか. Similarly, 確認する (to check) becomes 確認してもらえますか. This pattern is softer than 〜てください and works well when you are asking a favor. For confirmation, use the past-tense question 〜ましたか. For example, 受け取りましたか (Did you receive it?). The verb 預かる means 'to keep something for someone', so 預かっていますか asks whether a neighbor is currently holding your parcel, while 預かりましたか asks whether they took it in.

    When to use it

Always contact the carrier first. Use 荷物が届いているか確認してもらえますか to ask them to check. If they say it was left with a neighbor, you can ask お隣さんが代理で受け取りましたか to confirm which neighbor. Then, when you knock on the neighbor's door, start with お隣さん、すみません。私の荷物を預かっていますか。This is polite and direct. If you want to be extra tentative, say もし預かっていたら、教えてもらえますか。Avoid using 〜てもらえますか with the neighbor for a request that is really a confirmation; use 〜ていますか or 〜ましたか instead. Also, do not assume the neighbor will always accept; some may refuse proxy receipt, so ask neutrally.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    すみません、荷物が届いているか確認してもらえますか。

Excuse me, could you check whether my parcel has arrived?Sumimasen, nimotsu ga todoite iru ka kakunin shite moraemasu ka.
    B

    はい、少々お待ちください。…お客様の荷物は、お隣さんが代理で受け取りました。

Yes, one moment please. …Your parcel was accepted by the neighbor on your behalf.Hai, shōshō omachi kudasai. …Okyakusama no nimotsu wa, otonari-san ga dairi de uketorimashita.
    A

    そうですか。お隣さんに聞いてみます。ありがとうございます。

I see. I'll ask the neighbor. Thank you.Sō desu ka. Otonari-san ni kiite mimasu. Arigatō gozaimasu.
    B

    はい、失礼します。

    Yes, goodbye.Hai, shitsurei shimasu.

A little context goes a long way

In Japan, delivery companies often leave parcels with neighbors if you are not home, but this is not guaranteed. When speaking to a neighbor, a slightly tentative tone is appreciated. Use お隣さん rather than 隣人, which sounds formal or distant. If you need to ask the carrier to leave it with a neighbor in the future, say 隣の人に預けてもらえますか. Avoid blaming anyone; keep your tone polite and cooperative.

    One thing to watch for

Using 預けましたか to ask the neighbor if they kept your parcel.

Try this instead: 預けましたか means 'Did you leave it with someone?' The correct verb for receiving/keeping is 預かる, so ask 預かっていますか or 預かりましたか. For example, 私の荷物を預かっていますか。

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask the carrier to check if your parcel has arrived?

    Show a sample answer

    荷物が届いているか確認してもらえますか。

This uses 〜てもらえますか to politely request a check. You could also say 確認していただけますか for extra politeness.

2What do you say to a neighbor to ask if they received your parcel?

    Show a sample answer

    私の荷物を預かっていますか。

This uses 〜ていますか with the verb 預かる to ask whether they are currently holding it. A softer alternative is もし預かっていたら、教えてもらえますか。

3How do you ask the carrier if the neighbor accepted the parcel on your behalf?

    Show a sample answer

    お隣さんが代理で受け取りましたか。

This asks about proxy receipt. You can also say お隣さんが受け取りましたか, which is simpler but less specific.

    Take this with you

First ask the carrier with 〜てもらえますか, then ask the neighbor with 〜ましたか. Use お隣さん and 代理受け取り to sound natural and polite.
