Japanese for Parcel Delivery: Asking Whether a Signature Is Needed

Learn polite Japanese questions to ask a courier before accepting a parcel: whether a signature or seal is required, whether ID is needed, and what else you should have ready at the door.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

When a courier stands at your door with a clipboard, the useful question is not a general one about delivery, but a specific one about what you must provide right now. In Japanese, the two workhorse patterns are 〜が必要ですか (〜 ga hitsuyō desu ka) and 〜は要りますか (〜 wa irimasu ka). They overlap in meaning, but 必要 sounds slightly more formal and explicit, while 要りますか is common, natural spoken Japanese. This lesson gives you ready-made questions about signatures, seals, and identity confirmation so you can respond smoothly instead of guessing. Requirements vary by carrier and by the type of item, so treat every answer as applying to that moment and that parcel, and confirm on the spot if anything is unclear.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask a courier whether a signature is required before accepting a parcel.
    • ask whether a personal seal or ID is needed, using both 〜が必要ですか and 〜は要りますか.
    • ask what I should have ready at the door and confirm the answer politely.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    Is a signature required?

    SAIN ga hitsuyō desu ka.

Polite and clear. Use it when the courier is holding a clipboard or a handheld device and seems to be waiting for you to sign.

    Do you need a signature?

    SAIN wa irimasu ka.

Slightly more conversational than 必要ですか. Very common in everyday speech and equally polite with です/ます.

    Is a personal seal needed?

    hanko wa irimasu ka.

Use when you would rather use your registered seal than sign. The courier may say either is fine, or may specify one.

    Is identity verification required?

honnin kakunin wa hitsuyō desu ka.

Ask this for items that may be handed over only to the named recipient. It signals that you are ready to show ID if asked.

Is there anything I need when receiving it?

uketori no sai ni nanika hitsuyō desu ka.

A broad, safe question that covers signature, seal, ID, and payment. Good when you are not sure what the procedure involves.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Both 〜が必要ですか and 〜は要りますか ask whether something is required. Put the item before the pattern: サインが必要ですか (Is a signature required?), はんこは要りますか (Do you need a seal?). 必要です is a little more formal and works well with nouns like 本人確認; 要りますか is shorter and very natural at the door. To ask about several things at once, say (Do you need a signature or a seal?). If you want to confirm what you heard, repeat it with そうですか or ask どちらでもいいですか (Is either one all right?).

    When to use it

Use these questions after the courier says something like お届け物です (I have a delivery) and before you take the parcel. If the courier asks (Please sign here), you can respond (Yes, understood) and then ask (Is a seal all right too?). If you are not sure what is needed, start with 受け取りの際に何か必要ですか and let the courier explain. Requirements differ by service type and by parcel, so confirm on the spot rather than relying on a previous delivery.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

I have a delivery for you. Please sign here.Otodoke-mono desu. Kochira ni sain o onegai shimasu.
    B

All right. Excuse me, is a signature required? Is a seal all right too?Hai. Sumimasen, sain ga hitsuyō desu ka. Hanko demo ii desu ka.
    A

A seal is fine too. Identity verification is not required.Hanko demo daijōbu desu. Honnin kakunin wa hitsuyō arimasen.
    B

Understood. Is there anything I need when receiving it?Wakarimashita. Uketori no sai ni nanika hitsuyō desu ka.

A little context goes a long way

Japanese delivery interactions are usually brief and polite, and the courier may use keigo such as お届け物です or こちらにお願いします. Matching that tone with です/ます forms and a short すみません before your question keeps things smooth. A はんこ is a registered personal seal, not a casual stamp, and some people prefer it over a handwritten signature; asking はんこでもいいですか is a normal, practical question. Whether a signature, seal, or ID is accepted depends on the carrier and the item, so treat the courier's answer as specific to that delivery.

    One thing to watch for

Asking サインがほしいですか, which means "Do you want a signature?" and sounds like you are offering one rather than asking about a requirement.

Try this instead: Use サインが必要ですか or サインは要りますか to ask whether it is required. (Is a signature required?) If you simply want to offer, (Shall I sign?) is clearer.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1The courier is holding a clipboard and waiting. Ask politely whether a signature is required.

    Show a sample answer

This directly asks about the requirement with a polite です/ます form. サインは要りますか is also correct and slightly more conversational.

2You prefer to use your personal seal. Ask whether that is acceptable.

    Show a sample answer

でもいいですか asks whether an alternative is acceptable. はんこは要りますか asks whether a seal is needed, which is a different question, so choose based on what you want to know.

3You are not sure what the procedure involves. Ask what you need when receiving the parcel.

    Show a sample answer

This broad question invites the courier to mention signature, seal, ID, or payment. 何か要りますか is a shorter, natural alternative.

    Take this with you

At the door, ask サインが必要ですか or サインは要りますか, add はんこ or 本人確認 as needed, and use 受け取りの際に何か必要ですか when you want the courier to list everything at once. Confirm on the spot, because requirements differ by service and parcel.
