Japanese for Parcel Lockers: Saying a Package Is Too Big and Offering Alternatives

Learn polite Japanese for when a parcel will not fit a building delivery locker: explain the problem, ask what to do, and offer hand delivery or 置き配 as options.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

Delivery lockers are convenient until a parcel is too large for the compartment. In Japanese, you need two skills at once: explaining the problem clearly and offering a workable alternative. This lesson teaches the key words ロッカー, 大きい荷物, 手渡し and 置き配, plus the pattern 〜に入らないので、どうしたらいいですか. You will practise polite problem-solving with a delivery driver, and learn to ask whether 置き配 is possible instead of assuming it. The goal is not to refuse the delivery, but to keep the conversation moving toward a solution.

    By the end, you can…

    • explain that a parcel will not fit in the delivery locker.
    • ask a delivery driver what to do using 〜に入らないので、どうしたらいいですか.
    • offer alternatives such as 手渡し or 置き配, and ask whether they are possible.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

It will not fit in the locker.

    ROKKĀ ni hairimasen

Use when the compartment is too small for the parcel. 入りません is the polite negative of 入ります.

It is a large parcel, so it does not fit in the locker.

ōkii nimotsu nanode, ROKKĀ ni hairanain desu

〜なので gives a reason. 〜ないんです softens the explanation and invites help.

It does not fit in the locker, so what should I do?

A polite way to ask the driver for options. どうしたらいいですか is a standard problem-solving question.

Could you hand it to me in person, please?

    tewatashi de onegai dekimasu ka

手渡し means handing over directly, not leaving the parcel. Use it when you can meet the driver.

Is leaving it at the door possible?

    okihai wa kanō desu ka

置き配 means leaving the parcel at the door or a specified spot. Availability depends on the sender and the building, so ask rather than assume.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 〜に入らないので、どうしたらいいですか combines a reason with a request for advice. 入らない is the plain negative of 入る, and ので makes the reason sound softer than から. You can replace the first part with other problems: 名前が違うので、どうしたらいいですか (the name is different, so what should I do?). The final どうしたらいいですか is polite and does not demand a specific solution, so it works well with delivery staff.

    When to use it

Use this pattern when you are speaking to a driver at the door or through an intercom. Start with the problem, then ask for guidance. If you can receive the parcel in person, add If you cannot, ask Remember that 置き配 is not automatically available; it depends on the sender's instructions and the building's rules. A natural sequence is: 大きい荷物なので、ロッカーに入らないんです。どうしたらいいですか。Then listen for the driver's suggestion before offering your own preference.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Excuse me, it is a large parcel, so it does not fit in the locker.sumimasen, ōkii nimotsu nanode, ROKKĀ ni hairanain desu
    B

I see. It does not fit in the locker. What should we do?sō desu ka.
    A

Could you hand it to me in person, please? I am at home now.tewatashi de onegai dekimasu ka. ima, ie ni imasu
    B

Yes, that is fine. I will hand it to you at the entrance.hai, daijōbu desu. dewa, genkan de owatashi shimasu

A little context goes a long way

Japanese delivery interactions often begin with a brief apology or acknowledgment, such as すみません, before the problem is explained. Politeness here means stating the situation clearly and then asking for the driver's suggestion, rather than issuing a direct demand. 置き配 is common in some contexts, but it is not universal: the sender's shipping option and the building's rules matter. Asking 置き配は可能ですか is more appropriate than saying 置き配してください, because it leaves room for the driver to explain what is allowed.

    One thing to watch for

Try this instead: から can sound abrupt, and 置き配してください assumes the service is available. Then, if needed, ask This keeps the request polite and allows the driver to confirm what is possible.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'It does not fit in the locker, so what should I do?' in polite Japanese?

    Show a sample answer

This uses 入らないので for the reason and どうしたらいいですか to ask for advice. You could also say ロッカーに入りませんので、どうしたらいいですか; both are polite.

2You can meet the driver at the entrance. What phrase do you use to ask for hand delivery?

    Show a sample answer

手渡し means handing over directly. Adding お願いできますか makes it a polite request. If you want to be more specific, you can say

3You cannot receive the parcel in person. How do you ask whether it can be left at the door?

    Show a sample answer

This asks whether 置き配 is possible without assuming it is. A valid alternative is 置き配でお願いできますか, but 可能ですか is safer because it lets the driver explain any restrictions.

    Take this with you

When a parcel is too big for the locker, explain the problem with 〜に入らないので, ask どうしたらいいですか, and offer a concrete alternative such as 手渡し or ask about 置き配. Ask rather than assume, and keep the tone polite and cooperative.
