Emphasizing Information in Mandarin with 是……的 and 是……的 Structure

Learn how Mandarin highlights focused information using 是……的 cleft-like patterns, and how this differs from 的确/真的 do-emphasis.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

Mandarin does not have an exact word-for-word equivalent of English 'It is... that' or 'What... is'. Instead, it often uses the 是……的 pattern to mark information as already known or presupposed while focusing attention on a specific element, such as a person, time, place, or manner. This lesson teaches you how to use 是……的 to emphasize who did something, when, where, or how, and how it differs from do-emphasis with 的确, 真的, or 确实. You will practice moving the focused element after 是 and before 的, and you will learn when this pattern sounds natural and when it does not.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 是……的 to emphasize a person, time, place, or manner in a Mandarin sentence.
    • distinguish 是……的 focus from do-emphasis with 的确, 真的, or 确实.
    • form and answer questions that ask for focused information using 是……的.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    是安娜打的电话。

    It was Ana who called.

    Shì Ānnà dǎ de diànhuà.

Focuses on the person who made the call; 是 comes before the focused element 安娜, and 的 comes after the verb 打.

    我是昨天到的。

It was yesterday that I arrived.

    Wǒ shì zuótiān dào de.

Focuses on the time of arrival; 的 comes after the verb 到.

    他是在北京学的中文。

It was in Beijing that he studied Chinese.

Tā shì zài Běijīng xué de Zhōngwén.

Focuses on the place where the action happened; 在 marks the location, and 的 comes after the verb 学.

    我们是坐高铁去的。

It was by high-speed rail that we went.

Wǒmen shì zuò gāotiě qù de.

Focuses on the means of transportation; 的 comes after the verb 去.

    你是什么时候来的?

When was it that you came?

Nǐ shì shénme shíhou lái de?

A common question pattern asking for focused time information; answer with 是……的.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 是 + focused element + verb phrase + 的. The focused element can be a person, time, place, or manner. For example, 是安娜打的电话 focuses on 安娜 as the caller. 我是昨天到的 focuses on 昨天 as the arrival time. 他是在北京学的中文 focuses on 北京 as the place. 我们是坐高铁去的 focuses on 坐高铁 as the means. In each case, 是 and 的 frame the information that is already assumed, while the element between them receives the emphasis. The 的 typically appears after the verb, either immediately after it or before the object, depending on the verb and object type.

    When to use it

Use 是……的 when the action is already known or completed and you want to highlight one detail: who did it, when, where, or how. It is common in answers to questions like 你是什么时候来的? or 是谁打的电话? It is not used to emphasize the truth of the whole statement. For that, use 的确, 真的, or 确实 before the verb or adjective, as in 我的确喜欢他 'I really do like him' or 他真的来了 'He really came.' Do-emphasis adds intensity or confirms a fact; 是……的 cleft focus identifies a specific piece of information. Also, 是……的 is generally not used for future or habitual events; it typically refers to completed actions with known outcomes.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你是什么时候到上海的?

When was it that you arrived in Shanghai?Nǐ shì shénme shíhou dào Shànghǎi de?
    B

    我是前天到的。

It was the day before yesterday that I arrived.Wǒ shì qiántiān dào de.
    A

    你是坐飞机去的吗?

Was it by plane that you went?Nǐ shì zuò fēijī qù de ma?
    B

    不是,我是坐高铁去的。

No, it was by high-speed rail that I went.Bú shì, wǒ shì zuò gāotiě qù de.

A little context goes a long way

In everyday Mandarin conversation, 是……的 is neutral and common, but it can sound corrective if the context suggests the other person had a wrong assumption. For example, 我是坐高铁去的 can gently correct a mistaken belief that you flew. In formal writing or news, similar focus is often achieved by word order or 是……的 as well. Regional variation exists: in some northern varieties, 的 may be pronounced lightly or omitted in fast speech, but learners should keep the full pattern for clarity.

    One thing to watch for

Learners often use 是……的 to emphasize the truth of a whole sentence, as in 我是喜欢他的 to mean 'I really do like him.'

Try this instead: Use 的确, 真的, or 确实 for do-emphasis: 我的确喜欢他 or 我真的喜欢他. Use 是……的 to focus on a specific element. Note that 我是昨天喜欢他的 is unnatural; instead say 我是昨天开始喜欢他的 if you mean 'It was yesterday that I started liking him.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'It was Ana who called' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    是安娜打的电话。

This uses 是 before the focused person 安娜 and 的 after the verb 打. A valid alternative is 电话是安娜打的, which focuses on 安娜 as the caller with a slightly different information structure.

2What is the difference between 我是昨天到的 and 我真的到了?

    Show a sample answer

我是昨天到的 focuses on the time of arrival, meaning 'It was yesterday that I arrived.' 我真的到了 emphasizes the truth of the arrival, meaning 'I really did arrive.'

The first uses the 是……的 focus pattern; the second uses 真的 for do-emphasis. Both are correct, but they answer different implied questions.

3Turn 他坐高铁去北京 into a 是……的 sentence focusing on the means of transportation.

    Show a sample answer

    他是坐高铁去北京的。

Place 是 before 坐高铁 and 的 after the verb 去. This highlights 坐高铁 as the means. If the object is definite, 的 can also appear before it, as in 他是坐高铁去的北京.

    Take this with you

Use 是……的 to spotlight who, when, where, or how for a known action; use 的确, 真的, or 确实 when you want to emphasize that something is true.
