Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin Chinese, expressing doubt often relies on how something appears rather than on abstract probability. The words 好像 (hǎoxiàng), 显得 (xiǎnde), and 看起来 (kàn qǐlái) all convey doubt grounded in visual or sensory evidence. Unlike 可能 (kěnéng) or 也许 (yěxǔ), which simply state possibility, these phrases emphasize the speaker's impression. This lesson teaches you to use them accurately, with correct grammar and register, so you can say things like 'It seems unlikely' or 'He looks tired' naturally in conversation.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 好像, 显得, and 看起来 to express doubt based on appearance.
    • distinguish these from general possibility words like 可能 and 也许.
    • form negative and past-tense sentences with these phrases.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    好像不太可能。

    It seems unlikely.

    hǎoxiàng bú tài kěnéng

Use when something appears improbable based on what you see or sense. 好像 softens the statement.

    看起来要下雨了。

It looks like it's going to rain.

kàn qǐlái yào xià yǔ le

Based on visual cues like dark clouds. 看起来 is neutral and common in everyday speech.

    他显得很累。

    He appears very tired.

    tā xiǎnde hěn lèi

显得 focuses on the impression someone or something gives, often through demeanor or appearance.

    好像有问题。

There seems to be a problem.

    hǎoxiàng yǒu wèntí

Expresses doubt about a situation based on subtle signs. Can be used in both formal and informal contexts.

    看起来不太对劲。

    It doesn't look right.

    kàn qǐlái bú tài duìjìn

Use when something appears off or suspicious. 不对劲 means 'not right' or 'fishy'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

好像, 显得, and 看起来 are often followed by adjectives or verbs to express an impression. 好像 can be placed before a verb or adjective: 好像要下雨 (hǎoxiàng yào xià yǔ, 'seems like it will rain'). 显得 is typically followed by an adjective: 显得年轻 (xiǎnde niánqīng, 'appears young'). 看起来 can be followed by a clause: 看起来他不同意 (kàn qǐlái tā bù tóngyì, 'it looks like he disagrees'). Note that 好像 can also mean 'seem like' in comparisons, but here we focus on doubt.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when your doubt comes from observable evidence, not from general uncertainty. For example, if you see someone yawning, say 他好像很困 (tā hǎoxiàng hěn kùn, 'He seems sleepy'). If you are just guessing without evidence, use 可能 or 也许: 他可能很困 (tā kěnéng hěn kùn, 'He might be sleepy'). 显得 often implies a contrast or a quality that stands out: 这件衣服显得很旧 (zhè jiàn yīfu xiǎnde hěn jiù, 'This piece of clothing looks old'). 看起来 is the most neutral and can be used in both casual and formal situations.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你看,天好像要下雨了。

Look, it seems like it's going to rain.nǐ kàn, tiān hǎoxiàng yào xià yǔ le
    B

    是啊,看起来云很厚。我们带伞吧。

Yeah, it looks like the clouds are thick. Let's bring an umbrella.shì a, kàn qǐlái yún hěn hòu. wǒmen dài sǎn ba
    A

    他今天显得不太高兴。

He seems a bit unhappy today.tā jīntiān xiǎnde bú tài gāoxìng
    B

    可能他累了。不过看起来他不想说话。

Maybe he's tired. But it looks like he doesn't want to talk.kěnéng tā lèi le. búguò kàn qǐlái tā bù xiǎng shuōhuà

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, expressing doubt with 好像 or 看起来 often softens a statement, making it less direct. This is polite in situations where you don't want to assert something strongly. For example, saying 好像不对 (hǎoxiàng bú duì, 'seems wrong') is gentler than 不对 (bú duì, 'wrong'). 显得 can carry a slightly literary tone and is common in descriptions. Use these phrases appropriately to sound natural and considerate.

    One thing to watch for

Using 好像 as a direct translation of 'like' in comparisons, e.g., 他好像他爸爸 (tā hǎoxiàng tā bàba) to mean 'He looks like his father'.

Try this instead: For physical resemblance, use 像 (xiàng) or 长得像 (zhǎng de xiàng): 他像他爸爸 (tā xiàng tā bàba). 好像 is for doubt or seeming, not for 'look like' in the sense of resemblance.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you say 'It seems unlikely' using 好像?

    Show a sample answer

    好像不太可能。

This uses 好像 to express doubt based on impression. 不太可能 means 'unlikely'. Alternatives like 看起来不太可能 are also valid.

2Translate: 'She looks tired.' Use 显得.

    Show a sample answer

    她显得很累。

显得 is used here to express an impression from her appearance. 看起来很累 is also correct but less specific to the impression she gives.

3What's the difference between 看起来 and 可能?

    Show a sample answer

看起来 is based on visual evidence, while 可能 is general possibility.

看起来 requires something you can see or sense, e.g., 看起来要下雨了. 可能 does not require evidence, e.g., 可能要下雨了.

    Take this with you

Use 好像, 显得, and 看起来 to express doubt from appearance or impression. Remember: 好像 for seeming, 显得 for giving an impression, 看起来 for visual evidence. Avoid using 好像 for physical resemblance; use 像 instead.
