A warm illustrated language study space

In Mandarin Chinese, expressing cause and effect is essential for clear communication. While English uses words like 'therefore', 'as a result', and 'consequently', Mandarin employs a set of connectors that vary in formality and nuance. This lesson focuses on three key result markers: 所以 (suǒyǐ), 结果 (jiéguǒ), and 因此 (yīncǐ). You will learn how to use them accurately in sentences, distinguish their registers, and avoid common errors. By the end, you will be able to connect ideas logically and sound more natural in both spoken and written Chinese.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 所以 to express a result in everyday conversation.
    • use 结果 to indicate an unexpected or final outcome.
    • use 因此 in formal writing or speech to mean 'therefore'.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

It rained, so we stayed at home.

Xià yǔ le, suǒyǐ wǒmen dāi zài jiā lǐ.

所以 is the most common result connector, used in both speech and writing. It often pairs with 因为 (because) in the first clause.

He studied hard, and as a result, he got into a good university.

Tā nǔlì xuéxí, jiéguǒ kǎo shàng le hǎo dàxué.

结果 often implies a final or unexpected result, sometimes with a sense of 'turned out'.

The weather was bad; therefore, the match was canceled.

Tiānqì èliè, yīncǐ bǐsài qǔxiāo le.

因此 is more formal and is common in news, announcements, and written Chinese.

Because of the traffic jam, I was late.

Yīnwèi dǔchē, suǒyǐ wǒ chídào le.

因为...所以... is a common paired construction. In casual speech, 因为 may be omitted.

He was sick, so he didn't come to class.

Tā shēngbìng le, jiéguǒ méi lái shàngkè.

结果 can also introduce a negative or disappointing outcome.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The basic pattern for expressing result is: [Cause], 所以/结果/因此 [Result]. (He is busy with work, so he has no time to rest.) 结果 often appears in narratives to show a final outcome: 我们等了好久,结果他没来。(We waited a long time, but he didn't come.) 因此 is used in formal contexts: 环境污染严重,因此政府采取了措施。(Environmental pollution is severe; therefore, the government took measures.) Note that 所以 can be used with 因为 in the first clause: 因为下雨,所以我们没去。(Because it rained, we didn't go.)

    When to use it

Choose 所以 for general cause-effect in daily conversation. Use 结果 when you want to emphasize a final or unexpected result, often after a series of events. (I looked for a long time, and it turned out the keys were in my pocket.) 因此 is appropriate for formal writing, such as reports or news: 经济下滑,因此失业率上升。(The economy declined; consequently, unemployment rose.) Avoid using 因此 in casual chat; it sounds stiff. Note that 结果 is neutral about whether the outcome is good or bad: 他努力学习,结果考上了好大学。(He studied hard, and as a result, he got into a good university.) It simply presents the outcome as a final or noteworthy one.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

Why didn't you come to the meeting yesterday?Nǐ zuótiān zěnme méi lái kāihuì?
    B

I was sick, so I rested at home.Wǒ shēngbìng le, suǒyǐ zài jiā xiūxi.
    A

I see. In the end, the meeting was moved to next week.Yuánlái rúcǐ. Jiéguǒ huìyì gǎi dào le xià zhōu.
    B

Okay, then I will definitely attend next week.Hǎo de, nà wǒ xià zhōu yīdìng cānjiā.

A little context goes a long way

In Chinese, the choice of result connector reflects the formality of the situation. 所以 is neutral and widely used. 结果 often carries a nuance of 'in the end' or 'turned out', sometimes with surprise or disappointment. 因此 is formal and appears in written or official contexts. Using 因此 in casual conversation may sound overly formal, while using 结果 in formal writing may seem informal. Pay attention to context to sound natural.

    One thing to watch for

Using two result connectors together, e.g.,

Try this instead: Use only one result connector.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Translate: 'He was tired, so he went to bed early.'

    Show a sample answer

所以 is the most common result connector for everyday situations. 因此 could also work but is more formal.

(Use a connector that emphasizes the final outcome.)

    Show a sample answer

    结果

结果 highlights the final outcome, often after effort. 所以 would also be grammatically correct but less emphatic on the result.

3Which connector is more appropriate in a formal report?

    Show a sample answer

    因此

因此 is formal and suitable for written reports. 所以 is more conversational.

    Take this with you

Use 所以 for general results, 结果 for final or unexpected outcomes, and 因此 in formal contexts. Avoid mixing 所以 and 因此 in the same sentence.
