Answering a Mandarin Greeting: Natural Replies and Follow-Up Questions

Learn to reply when someone greets you in Mandarin, using short natural answers and returning the question with 你呢 (nǐ ne), so you keep the conversation going instead of just saying hello.

A warm illustrated language study space

When someone greets you in Mandarin, the reply turn is where the conversation either continues or stops. A single 你好 (nǐ hǎo) is fine as an opener, but as an answer it sounds flat. In this lesson you will learn short, natural replies to common greetings, and the small follow-up question 你呢 (nǐ ne) that sends the question back to the other person. You will practise answering 你好吗 (nǐ hǎo ma), 最近怎么样 (zuìjìn zěnme yàng) and 吃了吗 (chī le ma), and you will see how the reply changes with the greeting. Everything here is spoken Mandarin; no conjugation, no articles, no plural endings are needed.

    By the end, you can…

    • reply to a common Mandarin greeting with a short, natural answer.
    • return the question with 你呢 (nǐ ne) to keep the conversation going.
    • choose a suitable reply for 你好吗, 最近怎么样 and 吃了吗.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我很好,谢谢。

    I'm very well, thanks.

    wǒ hěn hǎo, xièxie.

A standard, slightly formal reply to 你好吗. Safe with strangers, teachers and older people.

    还不错。

    Not bad. / Pretty good.

    hái bú cuò.

A relaxed, common answer to 最近怎么样. It sounds positive but not exaggerated.

    你呢?

And you? / What about you?

    nǐ ne?

The key follow-up. Put it after your answer to send the question back. It never changes form.

    马马虎虎。

    So-so. / Just okay.

    mǎmǎhūhū.

An honest but polite answer when things are neither good nor bad. Softer than saying 不好.

    吃了,你呢?

    I've eaten, and you?

    chī le, nǐ ne?

The expected reply to the greeting 吃了吗. Answer briefly, then return the question.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The reply turn in Mandarin usually has two parts: a short answer, then 你呢 (nǐ ne). 你呢 means 'and you?' and it never changes with the subject, so you can use it after any answer. For example: A: 你好吗? (nǐ hǎo ma?) B: 我很好,谢谢。你呢? (wǒ hěn hǎo, xièxie. nǐ ne?) A: 我也很好。 (wǒ yě hěn hǎo.) Notice that 你呢 replaces a full repeated question; you do not need to say 你好吗 again. If you want to be more specific, you can also ask 你怎么样? (nǐ zěnme yàng?), which means 'how about you?'.

    When to use it

Match the reply to the greeting. 你好吗 (nǐ hǎo ma) is a general 'how are you' and takes 我很好,谢谢 (wǒ hěn hǎo, xièxie) or 还不错 (hái bú cuò). 最近怎么样 (zuìjìn zěnme yàng) asks about recent life, so a short comment plus 你呢 works well: 还行,你呢? (hái xíng, nǐ ne?). 吃了吗 (chī le ma) is a friendly everyday greeting, not a real invitation to dinner; answer briefly with 吃了,你呢? (chī le, nǐ ne?) or 还没呢 (hái méi ne) if you have not eaten. With close friends, 挺好的 (tǐng hǎo de) is very natural; with strangers or elders, keep 谢谢 (xièxie).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好!最近怎么样?

Hi! How have you been lately?nǐ hǎo! zuìjìn zěnme yàng?
    B

    还不错,你呢?

Not bad, and you?hái bú cuò, nǐ ne?
    A

    我也挺好的。谢谢!

I'm pretty good too. Thanks!wǒ yě tǐng hǎo de. xièxie!
    B

    那就好。

That's good to hear.nà jiù hǎo.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, greetings often work as friendly acknowledgements rather than real questions. 吃了吗 (chī le ma) is a warm everyday hello, especially among neighbours and older speakers; a short answer is enough, and a long report about your meal is not expected. 你好吗 (nǐ hǎo ma) is correct but can sound a little textbook-like between close friends, who often prefer 最近怎么样 or 怎么样. Returning the question with 你呢 is polite and keeps the exchange balanced.

    One thing to watch for

Answering 你好吗 with only 你好 (nǐ hǎo), treating it as a complete reply.

Try this instead: 你好 is a greeting, not an answer. Reply with a short comment and return the question: 我很好,谢谢。你呢? (wǒ hěn hǎo, xièxie. nǐ ne?) This answers the question and invites the other person to speak.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Someone says 最近怎么样? (zuìjìn zěnme yàng?). Give a short positive reply and return the question.

    Show a sample answer

还不错,你呢? (hái bú cuò, nǐ ne?)

还不错 answers the question briefly, and 你呢 returns it. 挺好的,你呢? (tǐng hǎo de, nǐ ne?) is also correct, especially with friends.

2A neighbour greets you with 吃了吗? (chī le ma?) and you have already eaten. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

    吃了,你呢? (chī le, nǐ ne?)

This answers the greeting naturally and returns it. 吃了,谢谢 (chī le, xièxie) is also fine, but adding 你呢 keeps the conversation going.

3What does 你呢 (nǐ ne) mean, and why is it useful in a reply?

    Show a sample answer

It means 'and you?' and it sends the question back without repeating the full question.

你呢 never changes form, so it works after any answer. You can also use 你怎么样? (nǐ zěnme yàng?) for a fuller version.

    Take this with you

Answer briefly, then add 你呢 (nǐ ne). A short reply plus a returned question turns a greeting into a real conversation.
