Useful pattern
Pinyin letters do not always represent the same sound in every final. In 现在 (xiànzài), both syllables have a fourth, falling tone. Xiàn contains the final -ian, approximately /jɛn/, not a separate English ee plus ah. Zài contains -ai, approximately /aɪ/. Keep xiàn as one syllable. The initial x is produced with the tongue tip down and the front of the tongue raised toward the hard palate; it differs from English sh. In 真的 (zhēn de), zhēn has a high-level tone and de is normally neutral. Listen to the whole syllable rather than assigning one fixed English sound to every pinyin letter.
When to use it
Use 现在 when you need to talk about the present moment. For example, 你现在忙吗？ (Are you busy now?) or 现在几点？ (What time is it now?). Use 真的 to express surprise or to confirm something: 真的吗？ (Really?) or 这是真的。 (This is true.) When referring to people or things, use 他 for males, 她 for females, and 它 for objects or animals. In speech, all three are pronounced tā, so context clarifies meaning. In writing, the characters are distinct. For example, 他是我朋友。 (He is my friend.) 她是我朋友。 (She is my friend.) 它是一只猫。 (It is a cat.) If you are unsure of someone's gender, 他 is often used as a default in writing, but 她 is preferred when the gender is known.

In spoken Chinese, 他, 她, and 它 are indistinguishable; listeners rely on context. In writing, the characters clarify gender and animacy. Using 真的 can sound abrupt if overused; it often appears in questions like 真的吗？ to seek confirmation. When asking staff for help, polite phrases like 请问 (qǐngwèn) are common, but this lesson focuses on pronunciation and basic usage.
One thing to watch for
Reading xiànzài as three syllables shee-an-zai or giving xiàn a broad ah vowel.
Try this instead: Say two syllables: xiàn-zài, both with falling tones. The final -ian in xiàn is approximately /jɛn/; the -ai in zài is /aɪ/. Pinyin x is a palatal sound with the tongue tip down, not exactly English sh.
