You already know some Chinese greetings, but when someone says 你好！最近怎么样？ you freeze, give a one-word answer, and the conversation dies. This workshop gives you three role-plays to practise replying naturally and adding 你呢？ so the other person keeps talking. You will use phrases like 我很好，谢谢。你呢？, 还好，你呢？, and 不错，谢谢关心。 in realistic situations, from a friendly classmate to a polite teacher. Each exercise builds on the last, so you get comfortable with the rhythm of a real exchange.
Choose the right reply before you open your mouth
The first step is to notice what the other person actually asked. If they say 你好吗？, a reply like 我很好，谢谢。你呢？ fits perfectly. But if they say 最近怎么样？, answering 我很好 can sound a little off, because 我很好 answers 'how are you' rather than 'how have you been'. In that case, 还不错 or 还行 works better. Also decide on the tone: with a teacher or new colleague, 我很好，谢谢。你呢？ is safe and polite. With a friend, 还好，你呢？ or 马马虎虎，你呢？ feels more natural and modest. Before you speak, quickly pick one answer and always add 你呢？ to return the question. That little word keeps the conversation from ending abruptly.
When the other person adds a follow-up question
The harder turn comes when you have just replied, and the other person asks something like 工作忙吗？. Now you need to answer that new question and still keep the exchange going. The trick is to give a short, honest answer and then ask them back. For example, if they ask 工作忙吗？, you can say 有点忙，但是还可以。你呢？. Notice that 谢谢关心 works well with acquaintances or colleagues, but with a close friend it can sound a bit formal or distancing. In that case, just say 还不错，你呢？. The key is to avoid a dead end: always add a return question, even a simple 你呢？, so the other person has something to respond to.

Unexpected complication: a colleague shows concern
You are at a work lunch with a colleague you do not know very well. They say: 最近怎么样？ You reply, and then they say: 工作忙吗？ You want to respond politely without sounding overly negative or too formal.
Your task: First, reply to 最近怎么样？ with a phrase like 马马虎虎 or 还行. Then respond to 工作忙吗？ You can say something like 有点忙，但是还可以。你呢？ Make sure your tone is warm but not overly formal, since this is a colleague, not a close friend.
Realistic follow-up decision: a teacher asks about your studies
You meet your Chinese teacher in the hallway. They greet you with 你好吗？ You want to be polite and respectful, using 您 where appropriate. After your reply, they ask 工作忙吗？
Your task: Reply to 你好吗？ with a formal phrase like 我很好，谢谢您。您呢？ Then answer 工作忙吗？ with something like 有点忙，但是还可以。你呢？ Pay attention to using 您 instead of 你 to show respect.
Common questions
What if I accidentally use 我很好 after 最近怎么样？ Is it a big mistake?
It is not a huge mistake, but it can sound a little off because 我很好 answers 'how are you' rather than 'how have you been'. If you catch yourself, you can quickly add 还不错 or 还行 to adjust. In practice, people will still understand you, but using 还不错，你呢？ or 还行，你呢？ sounds more natural after 最近怎么样？.
When should I use 谢谢关心? Is it always polite?
