Reading a Blurry Bike ID in Chinese: 车牌号, 看不清, and What to Say in the App

Learn elementary Mandarin for shared bikes: say the bike number is blurry or unreadable, ask how to 输入编号, and request 换一辆 when scanning fails.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When a shared bike's QR code or printed number is scratched, dirty, or faded, you need a few precise Chinese phrases fast. This lesson teaches the practical app-context language for that moment: 车牌号 (the bike's ID number), 模糊 (blurry), 看不清 (cannot see clearly), and 扫一扫 (scan). You will also learn the two actions that solve the problem: 输入编号 (enter the number) and 换一辆 (switch to another bike). The focus is on speaking clearly to yourself while using the app, and asking staff or bystanders simple questions without assuming any company's current rules. All examples use everyday mainland Mandarin and simplified characters.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that a bike's number or code is blurry and that I cannot see it clearly.
    • ask how to enter the bike number in the app and say I want to switch to another bike.
    • ask a staff member or passerby a short, polite question about what to do next.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    车牌号看不清。

I can't see the bike number clearly.

chē pái hào kàn bu qīng

Use this when the printed number on the bike is faded, dirty, or scratched. 看不清 means the eyes cannot make it out; it does not mean the number is absent.

    二维码有点模糊。

The QR code is a bit blurry.

èr wéi mǎ yǒu diǎn mó hu

Use 有点 to soften the statement. 模糊 describes an image or print that is not sharp. This is about the code itself, not your phone.

    怎么输入编号?

How do I enter the number?

zěn me shū rù biān hào

Ask this when the scan fails and the app offers a manual option. 输入 means to type or enter data; 编号 is the ID number you read off the bike.

    我想换一辆。

I'd like to switch to another one.

    wǒ xiǎng huàn yī liàng

Use 辆 for bicycles and other vehicles. This is a polite statement of preference, useful when the current bike is unreadable or broken.

    扫一扫也不行。

    Scanning doesn't work either.

sǎo yi sǎo yě bù xíng

扫一扫 is the common app action for scanning. 也不行 means 'also doesn't work,' so this sentence follows naturally after you have already tried once.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern [object] + 看不清 is the fastest way to explain a visibility problem. 看不清 literally means 'look-not-clear,' and it takes the thing you cannot see as its topic: 车牌号看不清 (the bike number is unclear), 二维码看不清 (the QR code is unclear). To add a reason, use 因为 (because): 因为太脏,所以车牌号看不清 (because it's too dirty, the bike number is unclear). To ask for help, use 怎么 + verb: 怎么输入编号? (how do I enter the number?) or 怎么换一辆? (how do I switch to another one?). Keep the verb right after 怎么; do not add 是 or 吗 in this question pattern.

    When to use it

Use 看不清 when your eyes cannot read the number or code, and 模糊 when the print or image itself is not sharp. If the scan fails, say 扫一扫不行 or 扫一扫也不行 before asking 怎么输入编号. When you decide the bike is not worth the trouble, say 我想换一辆 to a staff member or simply tap the switch option in the app. If you ask a passerby, start with 请问 (excuse me) to keep the tone polite: 请问,车牌号看不清,怎么办? (Excuse me, the bike number is unclear—what should I do?) Avoid claiming what the app will do; ask instead.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    B

    如果还是不行,就换一辆吧。

If it still doesn't work, just switch to another one.rú guǒ hái shi bù xíng, jiù huàn yī liàng ba

A little context goes a long way

In mainland shared-bike situations, people often solve problems quietly in the app before asking a person. A short, direct question is normal, but adding 请问 or 麻烦你 softens it. Staff may not know every app detail, so ask '怎么输入编号' rather than demanding a specific outcome. Do not assume a company's current rules, fees, or guarantees; ask what to do next. When speaking to a stranger, use 您 for 'you' if you want extra politeness, though 你 is fine in casual app talk.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我看不清楚车牌号 to mean 'I can't see the bike number clearly' when you mean the number itself is unreadable.

Try this instead: Both can work, but 车牌号看不清 is more natural and concise for a blurry or faded number. 我看不清楚 focuses on your eyesight; 车牌号看不清 focuses on the number. Use 二维码有点模糊 for a blurry code, and 扫一扫不行 for a failed scan. Example: 车牌号看不清,怎么输入编号?

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1You cannot read the printed number on the bike. What is a natural Chinese sentence?

    Show a sample answer

    车牌号看不清。

This uses the topic-comment pattern with 看不清. 二维码看不清 is also valid if you mean the code, and 有点模糊 can be added for 'a bit blurry.'

2The scan fails and you want to type the number instead. What question do you ask?

    Show a sample answer

    怎么输入编号?

怎么 + verb asks 'how.' 输入编号 means 'enter the number.' You could also say 怎么手动输入? (how do I enter it manually?).

3You decide this bike is not worth it. What do you say to switch?

    Show a sample answer

    我想换一辆。

我想 + verb expresses a polite wish. 换一辆 uses 辆 for bicycles. 换一辆吧 with 吧 is also natural and slightly more casual.

    Take this with you

For a hard-to-read shared bike, say 车牌号看不清 or 二维码有点模糊, ask 怎么输入编号 if the scan fails, and use 我想换一辆 when you want a different bike. Keep questions short and polite, and ask staff rather than assuming app rules.
