Includes practice questions and sample answers.

Expressing that you miss someone or that they matter deeply is different from giving a compliment. In Mandarin, these feelings are often conveyed with straightforward, heartfelt phrases. This lesson teaches you five key expressions for close relationships: 我想你 (I miss you), 我很想你 (I miss you very much), 你对我很重要 (You are very important to me), 你对我特别好 (You are especially good to me), and 我很在乎你 (I care about you a lot). You will learn when to use each, how to pronounce them with correct tones, and how they differ from casual praise. By the end, you can share genuine warmth with the people you love.

    By the end, you can…

    • say 'I miss you' in Mandarin to a close friend or family member.
    • tell someone 'You mean a lot to me' using 你对我很重要.
    • distinguish between a compliment and a deeper expression of care.
    • use these phrases appropriately in a short conversation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我想你。

    I miss you.

    wǒ xiǎng nǐ

Use with close family, a romantic partner, or a very dear friend. It is warm but not overly formal. For 'I miss you all' say 我想你们 (wǒ xiǎng nǐmen).

    我很想你。

    I miss you very much.

    wǒ hěn xiǎng nǐ

Adding 很 (hěn) intensifies the feeling. Use when you want to emphasize how much you miss someone, for example after a long separation.

    你对我很重要。

You are very important to me.

    nǐ duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào

A sincere statement of how much someone matters. Use with a partner, a best friend, or a family member. It is deeper than a compliment about appearance or skills.

    你对我特别好。

You are especially good to me.

    nǐ duì wǒ tèbié hǎo

Express gratitude for someone's kindness and care. Use when someone has done something thoughtful. It focuses on how they treat you, not on their general qualities.

    我很在乎你。

I care about you a lot.

    wǒ hěn zàihu nǐ

A gentle way to say you value someone emotionally. Use with close ones when you want to reassure them of your feelings. Softer than 我爱你 (wǒ ài nǐ, I love you), which is very strong and usually romantic.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

Many of these phrases follow a simple pattern: Subject + 很 + Verb/Adjective + Object. For example, 我很想你 (wǒ hěn xiǎng nǐ) means 'I very much miss you.' Here 很 (hěn) intensifies the verb 想 (xiǎng) and makes the sentence sound natural. Without 很, 我想你 is still correct but can sound a bit abrupt in some contexts. Another pattern is 你对我 + Adjective, meaning 'You are [adjective] to me.' So 你对我很重要 (nǐ duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào) = 'You are very important to me.' You can also say 你对我很好 (nǐ duì wǒ hěn hǎo) = 'You are very good to me.' Note that 对 (duì) here means 'to' or 'toward' in terms of treatment.

    When to use it

Use 我想你 or 我很想你 when you have not seen someone for a while and want to tell them you miss them. It is common between family members, close friends, and romantic partners. For example, a daughter studying abroad might say to her mother: 妈妈,我很想你 (Māma, wǒ hěn xiǎng nǐ). Use 你对我很重要 when you want to express that someone is a significant part of your life. This is appropriate for a partner, a best friend, or a mentor. 你对我特别好 is for thanking someone for their kindness, such as after they helped you through a hard time. 我很在乎你 is a gentle way to show emotional investment; it works well when you want to reassure someone without the weight of 我爱你. Avoid using these with casual acquaintances or in formal business settings.

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, expressing deep affection verbally is often reserved for close relationships. 我想你 is common and warm, but 我爱你 is very strong and typically romantic; using it with friends can feel awkward. 你对我很重要 is a sincere, slightly formal way to show someone they matter, suitable for partners or lifelong friends. 我很在乎你 is a softer alternative that conveys care without the intensity of love. Chinese speakers may also show care through actions, like sharing food or asking if you have eaten, so verbal expressions are often paired with practical gestures. Adjust your tone and choice based on the relationship and setting.

    One thing to watch for

Using 我爱你 (wǒ ài nǐ) to mean 'I care about you' with a casual friend.

Try this instead: 我爱你 is very strong and usually romantic. For friends or family, say 我很在乎你 (wǒ hěn zàihu nǐ) or 你对我很重要 (nǐ duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào) instead. For example, to a close friend: 我很在乎你,你是我好朋友 (wǒ hěn zàihu nǐ, nǐ shì wǒ hǎo péngyou).
