How to Explain Your Culture in Mandarin: Saying "In My Country, We Usually..."

Learn to share your own customs in Mandarin using 在我的国家 (zài wǒ de guójiā), 我们通常 (wǒmen tōngcháng), and 一般来说 (yìbān lái shuō), with a natural four-line dialogue and common-mistake fixes.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

When you want to tell Chinese speakers about your own culture, the key move is to frame your statement as a general habit rather than a personal opinion. Mandarin does this with a small set of openers: 在我的国家 (zài wǒ de guójiā, "in my country"), 我们通常 (wǒmen tōngcháng, "we usually"), and 一般来说 (yìbān lái shuō, "generally speaking"). Put one of these at the front, then state the custom as a plain action. This lesson teaches you to build those sentences, soften them politely with 比较 (bǐjiào, "relatively") or 一般 (yìbān, "generally"), and connect several customs into a short, coherent explanation. You will not learn to ask others about their culture here; the focus is entirely on sharing yours clearly and respectfully.

    By the end, you can…

    • open a cultural explanation with 在我的国家 or 我们通常.
    • describe a custom using a plain action verb and add frequency words like 一般 and 通常.
    • soften a general statement with 比较 or 一般来说 so it does not sound absolute.
    • connect two or three customs into a short spoken explanation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    在我的国家,我们通常……

    In my country, we usually...

zài wǒ de guójiā, wǒmen tōngcháng...

The safest general opener. Use it when you want to introduce a habit that most people in your country share, not just you.

    一般来说,我们……

    Generally speaking, we...

    yìbān lái shuō, wǒmen...

A softer, more academic opener. Good when you are not sure every single person does it, or when you want to sound careful.

    我们比较……

    We are relatively...

    wǒmen bǐjiào...

Use 比较 before an adjective to avoid sounding absolute. 我们比较早吃饭 means "we eat relatively early," not "we always eat early."

    这跟我们的文化有关系。

This is related to our culture.

zhè gēn wǒmen de wénhuà yǒu guānxi.

A useful closing line after you explain a custom. It signals that the habit has a cultural reason without over-explaining.

    举个例子,……

    For example,...

    jǔ ge lìzi,...

Use this to add a concrete example after a general statement. 个 is usually neutral tone here: jǔ ge lìzi.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is: opener + subject + frequency adverb + action. For example, 在我的国家,我们通常晚上六点吃饭 (zài wǒ de guójiā, wǒmen tōngcháng wǎnshang liù diǎn chīfàn) means "In my country, we usually eat at six in the evening." You can swap the opener: 一般来说,我们晚上六点吃饭 is slightly more formal. If you want to be less absolute, put 比较 before an adjective: 我们比较早吃饭 (wǒmen bǐjiào zǎo chīfàn), "we eat relatively early." Notice that Mandarin does not change the verb for "we"; 我们 stays the same in every sentence. Time words like 晚上六点 come before the verb, not after it.

    When to use it

Use 在我的国家 when you are clearly talking about your home country and your listener knows you are from elsewhere. Use 我们通常 when the subject is already clear and you want to sound conversational. Use 一般来说 when you are speaking to a teacher, a colleague, or a group, or when you want to avoid sounding like you speak for everyone. For a polite explanation, combine two: 一般来说,在我的国家,我们比较早吃饭. Avoid saying 我们总是 (wǒmen zǒngshì, "we always") unless the habit really is universal; 总是 can sound stubborn. If someone asks why, answer with 这跟我们的文化有关系 and then give one example with 举个例子.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    在我的国家,我们通常晚上六点吃饭。

In my country, we usually eat at six in the evening.zài wǒ de guójiā, wǒmen tōngcháng wǎnshang liù diǎn chīfàn.
    B

    哦,那你们吃得比较早。为什么?

Oh, then you eat relatively early. Why?o, nà nǐmen chī de bǐjiào zǎo. wèishénme?
    A

    这跟我们的文化有关系。一般来说,我们下班比较早。

This is related to our culture. Generally speaking, we finish work relatively early.zhè gēn wǒmen de wénhuà yǒu guānxi. yìbān lái shuō, wǒmen xiàbān bǐjiào zǎo.
    B

    原来是这样。那周末呢?

I see. What about weekends?yuánlái shì zhèyàng. nà zhōumò ne?

A little context goes a long way

Chinese speakers often expect a general statement to be framed as a tendency, not an absolute rule. Words like 通常, 一般, and 比较 keep your explanation modest and leave room for exceptions. Direct claims such as 我们总是…… can sound as if you are arguing. Also, 国家 (guójiā) usually means a country or nation; if you come from a region rather than a country, say 在我的家乡 (zài wǒ de jiāxiāng, "in my hometown") or name the place directly. When you are unsure whether a habit is universal, 一般来说 is safer than 在我的国家.

    One thing to watch for

Learners often say 在我的国家,我们总是晚上六点吃饭, treating 总是 as a neutral translation of "usually."

Try this instead: 总是 means "always" and sounds absolute. For a general habit, use 通常 or 一般: 在我的国家,我们通常晚上六点吃饭. If you want to soften further, add 比较: 我们比较早吃饭. Reserve 总是 for things that truly happen every time.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1Translate into Mandarin: "In my country, we usually drink tea in the morning."

    Show a sample answer

    在我的国家,我们通常早上喝茶。

This uses the opener 在我的国家 plus 我们通常 and places the time word 早上 before the verb 喝. 一般来说,我们早上喝茶 is also acceptable if you want a softer tone.

2Make this sentence less absolute: 我们总是吃米饭。

    Show a sample answer

    我们通常吃米饭。 or 我们一般吃米饭。

Replacing 总是 with 通常 or 一般 turns an absolute claim into a general tendency. 我们比较常吃米饭 is another valid option if you want to stress frequency.

3You explained a custom and your listener asks 为什么. Give a short closing line.

    Show a sample answer

    这跟我们的文化有关系。举个例子,我们下班比较早。

This links the custom to culture and adds one concrete example with 举个例子. You could also say 这跟我们的习惯有关系 if the reason is a habit rather than culture.

    Take this with you

Open with 在我的国家 or 一般来说, keep the habit general with 通常 or 比较, and close with 这跟我们的文化有关系 plus one example. That three-step shape lets you share your culture clearly without sounding absolute.
