Checking Assumptions Politely in Mandarin Chinese

Learn intermediate Mandarin phrases to check assumptions before they cause offense, using softening expressions like 希望你别介意 and 我可能想多了.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
A quiet illustrated scene for evening language practice

In Mandarin conversation, directly stating a guess about someone's feelings, background, or intentions can sound blunt or intrusive. This lesson teaches you a specific skill: checking your assumptions before they become misunderstandings. You will learn phrases that signal humility and respect, such as 希望你别介意 (I hope you don't mind) and 我可能想多了 (I might be overthinking). These expressions do not resolve a misunderstanding after it happens; instead, they prevent one by giving the other person room to correct you gently. You will practice combining a soft opener with a question, using 是不是 and 还是 to offer alternatives, and adjusting your tone for different relationships. All examples use simplified Chinese and pinyin with tone marks.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 希望你别介意 and similar softeners to introduce a potentially sensitive question.
    • check an assumption with 我可能想多了 and invite correction without sounding accusatory.
    • offer two possible interpretations using 是不是……还是…… to reduce pressure on the listener.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    希望你别介意,我想问一下……

    I hope you don't mind, I'd like to ask…

xī wàng nǐ bié jiè yì, wǒ xiǎng wèn yī xià……

Use before a personal or sensitive question. 别介意 literally means 'don't take it to heart'; it softens the request.

    我可能想多了,不过……

    I might be overthinking, but…

wǒ kě néng xiǎng duō le, bú guò……

Signals that you are not certain your assumption is correct. 想多了 means 'to think too much' and is common in casual and neutral contexts.

    你是不是觉得……?

Do you feel that…? / Are you perhaps feeling that…?

nǐ shì bu shì jué de……?

A gentle yes/no check. 是不是 softens the question compared to a direct statement like 你觉得…….

    还是说,其实……?

    Or actually, is it that…?

    hái shì shuō, qí shí……?

Offers an alternative interpretation. 还是说 introduces a second possibility, giving the listener an easy way to correct you.

    如果我理解错了,请告诉我。

If I've understood wrongly, please tell me.

rú guǒ wǒ lǐ jiě cuò le, qǐng gào su wǒ.

A direct but polite invitation to correct you. 理解错了 means 'understood incorrectly'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

A reliable pattern for checking assumptions is: softener + assumption + invitation to correct. For example, 希望你别介意,我可能想多了,你是不是最近不太想说话?如果我理解错了,请告诉我。 (I hope you don't mind, I might be overthinking, are you perhaps not wanting to talk much lately? If I've understood wrongly, please tell me.) The softener 希望你别介意 lowers the risk of sounding nosy. 我可能想多了 shows you are not claiming certainty. The question with 是不是 is gentler than a flat statement. Finally, 如果我理解错了,请告诉我 hands control back to the listener. You can also use 还是说 to offer a second guess: 你是不是累了,还是说其实你有别的心事? (Are you tired, or actually is something else on your mind?) This pattern works in workplaces, friendships, and family conversations.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you notice a change in someone's behavior and want to check your guess without accusing them. For instance, if a colleague seems quiet, say 希望你别介意,我可能想多了,你是不是对昨天的安排有意见? (I hope you don't mind, I might be overthinking, do you perhaps have a problem with yesterday's arrangement?) If a friend declines an invitation, try 你是不是最近很忙,还是说其实你想休息一下? (Are you very busy lately, or actually do you want to rest?) Avoid these softeners when you are simply making a factual request, such as asking for the time; overusing them can sound indirect. Also, with close friends, 我可能想多了 may feel too formal, so 我是不是想多了? (Am I overthinking?) is more natural. With superiors, keep 希望你别介意 and 请告诉我 to maintain respect.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    希望你别介意,我可能想多了,你是不是最近不太想参加聚会?

I hope you don't mind, I might be overthinking, are you perhaps not wanting to join gatherings lately?xī wàng nǐ bié jiè yì, wǒ kě néng xiǎng duō le, nǐ shì bu shì zuì jìn bú tài xiǎng cān jiā jù huì?
    B

    没有,我只是最近工作有点忙。谢谢你直接问我。

No, I'm just a bit busy with work lately. Thanks for asking me directly.méi yǒu, wǒ zhǐ shì zuì jìn gōng zuò yǒu diǎn máng. xiè xie nǐ zhí jiē wèn wǒ.
    A

    那就好。如果我理解错了,请告诉我。还是说,其实你有别的原因?

That's good. If I've understood wrongly, please tell me. Or actually, is there another reason?nà jiù hǎo. rú guǒ wǒ lǐ jiě cuò le, qǐng gào su wǒ. hái shì shuō, qí shí nǐ yǒu bié de yuán yīn?
    B

    真的只是忙。不过你这样说,我觉得很舒服。

It's really just being busy. But the way you said it makes me feel comfortable.zhēn de zhǐ shì máng. bú guò nǐ zhè yàng shuō, wǒ jué de hěn shū fu.

A little context goes a long way

In many Mandarin-speaking contexts, direct personal questions can feel intrusive, especially with acquaintances or colleagues. Softeners like 希望你别介意 and 我可能想多了 show that you are aware of the other person's boundaries. However, these phrases are not a universal formula; with very close friends, too much softening may sound distant. Pay attention to the relationship and the setting. In formal workplaces, 请告诉我 is appropriate; in casual chats, 你说呢? (what do you think?) can invite correction more naturally.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我觉得你生气了 (I think you're angry) as a direct assumption.

Try this instead: This sounds like you are telling the person how they feel. Instead, soften it: 我可能想多了,你是不是有点不高兴? (I might be overthinking, are you perhaps a bit upset?) The question form 是不是 gives the listener room to disagree.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How would you soften the question '你不喜欢这个计划吗?' (Don't you like this plan?)

    Show a sample answer

    希望你别介意,我可能想多了,你是不是不太喜欢这个计划?

Adding 希望你别介意 and 我可能想多了 lowers the pressure. Using 是不是 instead of a direct negative question makes it easier for the listener to answer honestly. Other softeners like 我是不是想多了? are also acceptable.

2What does 还是说 signal in a sentence like 你是不是累了,还是说其实你有别的心事?

    Show a sample answer

It introduces a second possible interpretation, giving the listener an alternative to correct you.

还是说 means 'or actually' and offers another guess. It reduces the feeling that you have already decided what is true. You could also use 或者 (or) in some contexts, but 还是说 is more natural for offering a contrasting possibility.

3Rewrite this direct statement as a polite assumption check: 你不同意我的看法。 (You disagree with my view.)

    Show a sample answer

    我可能想多了,你是不是不太同意我的看法?如果我理解错了,请告诉我。

The rewrite adds a softener, changes the statement into a 是不是 question, and invites correction. This keeps your assumption open. A valid alternative is 希望你别介意,我是不是理解错了?

    Take this with you

Before voicing a guess about someone's feelings or intentions, add a softener, turn it into a gentle question, and invite correction. This prevents misunderstandings instead of repairing them later.
