Talking About Past Travel in Mandarin: Saying 'The Food in Italy Was Amazing'

Learn to use 了 and 很 to describe past travel experiences in Mandarin, focusing on food. Build sentences like '意大利的食物很好吃' and ask follow-up questions.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In this lesson, you will learn how to talk about food you ate on a past trip using Mandarin. Unlike English, Mandarin does not change verb forms for past tense. Instead, it uses time words and the particle 了 to show that an action is completed. You will practice describing a past trip to Italy, saying that the food was amazing, and asking others about their experiences. By the end, you will be able to share simple reflections on past travel meals.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that the food in a place was delicious or amazing using 好吃 and 很棒.
    • use 了 to indicate a completed action in a past trip.
    • ask someone if they have been to a place and what they ate.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    意大利的食物很好吃。

The food in Italy was very delicious.

    Yìdàlì de shíwù hěn hǎochī.

Use 很 before an adjective to make a simple statement. No past tense marker is needed if the context is clear.

    我去了意大利。

    I went to Italy.

    Wǒ qù le Yìdàlì.

了 after the verb 去 shows the action is completed. This is a common way to talk about a past trip.

    我吃了很多意大利面食。

I ate a lot of Italian pasta.

Wǒ chī le hěn duō Yìdàlì miànshí.

了 after 吃 indicates the eating is finished. 很多 means 'a lot of'. 意大利面食 (Yìdàlì miànshí) is the natural term for Italian pasta; 意大利面 alone often refers specifically to spaghetti.

    那里的食物很棒!

    The food there was great!

    Nàlǐ de shíwù hěn bàng!

很棒 means 'very great' and is a strong positive comment. 那里 means 'there'.

    你去过意大利吗?

    Have you been to Italy?

    Nǐ qù guo Yìdàlì ma?

过 after the verb shows past experience. 吗 makes it a yes/no question.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To talk about a completed action in the past, put 了 after the verb. For example, 我吃了 (I ate), 我去了 (I went). To describe a past state or quality, like food being delicious, you often do not need 了. Instead, use 很 before the adjective: 意大利的食物很好吃 (The food in Italy was very delicious). The time is understood from context or from a time word like 去年 (last year). If you want to emphasize experience, use 过 after the verb: 我去过意大利 (I have been to Italy).

    When to use it

Use 了 when you are reporting a specific completed event, such as 我昨天吃了比萨 (I ate pizza yesterday). Use 过 when you are talking about having had an experience at some indefinite time, like 我吃过意大利面食 (I have eaten pasta). Use 很 with adjectives to make a simple statement: 那里的食物很棒 (The food there was great). Do not use 了 with 很 in the same clause; say 食物很好吃, not 食物很好吃了. When asking about someone's past trip, use 你去过...吗? (Have you been to...?).

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你去过意大利吗?

Have you been to Italy?Nǐ qù guo Yìdàlì ma?
    B

    去过。我去年去了罗马。

Yes, I have. I went to Rome last year.Qù guo. Wǒ qùnián qù le Luómǎ.
    A

    那里的食物怎么样?

How was the food there?Nàlǐ de shíwù zěnmeyàng?
    B

    意大利的食物很好吃!我吃了很多比萨和意大利面食。

The food in Italy was very delicious! I ate a lot of pizza and pasta.Yìdàlì de shíwù hěn hǎochī! Wǒ chī le hěn duō bǐsà hé Yìdàlì miànshí.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, it is common to use 了 to mark completed actions, but overusing it can sound unnatural. For past states like 'the food was delicious', simply use 很 + adjective without 了. Also, when talking about travel, Chinese speakers often use 过 to ask about experiences. Be careful with 了 placement: it goes after the verb, not at the end of the sentence. In casual conversation, you can omit 了 if the past time is clear from context, such as 昨天我吃比萨 (Yesterday I ate pizza).

    One thing to watch for

Adding 了 to an adjective to show past tense, like 食物很好吃了.

Try this instead: Do not use 了 with 很 + adjective. Say 食物很好吃 (The food was delicious). Use 了 only with verbs to show completed actions, e.g., 我吃了 (I ate).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I went to Italy' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我去了意大利。

This uses 了 after the verb 去 to show a completed action. You could also say 我去过意大利 if you mean 'I have been to Italy'.

2Translate: 'The food there was very delicious.'

    Show a sample answer

    那里的食物很好吃。

This uses 很 before 好吃. No 了 is needed because it describes a state, not a completed action.

3Ask someone: 'Have you eaten Italian food?'

    Show a sample answer

    你吃过意大利菜吗?

This uses 过 after the verb 吃 to ask about past experience. 吗 makes it a yes/no question.

    Take this with you

Use 了 after verbs for completed past actions, 过 for past experiences, and 很 + adjective for past descriptions. Avoid adding 了 to adjectives.
