Chinese for Sharing Life Dreams: 'Someday I Want To...'

Learn to express broad life hopes in Mandarin using 有一天 (yǒu yī tiān) and 我想 (wǒ xiǎng), and tell them apart from career goals.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Talking about dreams is different from talking about career plans. A career goal is often specific and measurable: 'I want to become a manager by 30.' A life dream is broader and more personal: 'Someday I want to live by the sea.' In Mandarin, the most natural frame for these hopes is 有一天 (yǒu yī tiān, 'someday') plus 我想 (wǒ xiǎng, 'I want to') or 我希望 (wǒ xī wàng, 'I hope'). This lesson gives you ready-made phrases, a clear pattern, and a short dialogue so you can share your own life dreams in conversation without sounding like you are reading a résumé.

    By the end, you can…

    • use 有一天 (yǒu yī tiān) to introduce a broad life dream.
    • distinguish a life dream from a career goal in Mandarin.
    • ask a friend about their dreams and respond naturally.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    有一天,我想去环游世界。

Someday, I want to travel around the world.

Yǒu yī tiān, wǒ xiǎng qù huán yóu shì jiè.

A classic broad life dream. 有一天 sets the open timeline; 环游世界 is a fixed four-character phrase meaning 'travel around the world'.

    我希望以后能住在海边。

I hope I can live by the sea in the future.

Wǒ xī wàng yǐ hòu néng zhù zài hǎi biān.

Use 希望 (xī wàng) for a heartfelt hope rather than a firm plan. 以后 (yǐ hòu) means 'later, in the future'.

    我的梦想是开一家小书店。

My dream is to open a small bookstore.

Wǒ de mèng xiǎng shì kāi yī jiā xiǎo shū diàn.

梦想 (mèng xiǎng) is 'dream' as a noun. The pattern '我的梦想是 + verb phrase' is very common for stating a dream.

    你呢?你有什么梦想?

What about you? What dreams do you have?

Nǐ ne? Nǐ yǒu shén me mèng xiǎng?

A natural way to turn the question back to your conversation partner. 你呢 is a friendly, informal 'and you?'

    我想学一门乐器,比如吉他。

I want to learn an instrument, for example the guitar.

Wǒ xiǎng xué yī mén yuè qì, bǐ rú jí tā.

Use 一门 (yī mén) as the measure word for a skill or subject like an instrument or language. 比如 introduces an example.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 有一天 + 我想/我希望 + verb phrase. 有一天 (yǒu yī tiān) means 'someday' and signals an open, unplanned future. 我想 (wǒ xiǎng) expresses a personal desire; 我希望 (wǒ xī wàng) sounds a little softer and more hopeful. Examples: 有一天,我想养一只狗。 (Someday, I want to raise a dog.) 我希望有一天能去非洲。 (I hope someday I can go to Africa.) To state a dream as a noun, use 我的梦想是... : 我的梦想是帮助更多的人。 (My dream is to help more people.) Notice that Mandarin verbs do not change form for tense; time words like 有一天 or 以后 carry the future meaning.

    When to use it

Use these phrases in relaxed conversations with friends, classmates, or family, not in a formal job interview. A career goal often uses 计划 (jì huà, 'plan') or 目标 (mù biāo, 'goal'): 我的目标是三年内升职。 (My goal is to get promoted within three years.) A life dream is broader and more emotional, so 梦想, 希望, and 有一天 fit better. If you are unsure whether your listener shares the same dream, you can soften with 可能 (kě néng, 'maybe'): 有一天,我可能想去乡下生活。 (Someday, I might want to live in the countryside.) This keeps the tone open and non-boastful.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你以后想做什么?

What do you want to do in the future?Nǐ yǐ hòu xiǎng zuò shén me?
    B

    工作方面,我想当老师。不过,我的梦想是有一天开一家小咖啡馆。

Career-wise, I want to be a teacher. But my dream is to open a small café someday.Gōng zuò fāng miàn, wǒ xiǎng dāng lǎo shī. Bù guò, wǒ de mèng xiǎng shì yǒu yī tiān kāi yī jiā xiǎo kā fēi guǎn.
    A

    听起来很棒!我也希望有一天能住在海边,每天看日出。

That sounds great! I also hope someday I can live by the sea and watch the sunrise every day.Tīng qǐ lái hěn bàng! Wǒ yě xī wàng yǒu yī tiān néng zhù zài hǎi biān, měi tiān kàn rì chū.
    B

    那我们一起努力吧!

Then let's work hard together!Nà wǒ men yī qǐ nǔ lì ba!

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin conversation, 梦想 (mèng xiǎng) often carries warmth and sincerity, so it is common among friends and in encouraging contexts. With acquaintances or in more formal settings, people may prefer 希望 (xī wàng) or 计划 (jì huà) to avoid sounding overly dramatic. Sharing a life dream is usually seen as a friendly, bonding move, but it is polite to ask about the other person's dream too, using 你呢? (nǐ ne?) to keep the exchange balanced.

    One thing to watch for

Using 我想 (wǒ xiǎng) alone for a distant life dream, as in 我想去环游世界, without any time phrase, which can sound like an immediate plan.

Try this instead: Add 有一天 (yǒu yī tiān) or 以后 (yǐ hòu) to mark the dream as open-ended: 有一天,我想去环游世界。 This makes it clear you are sharing a hope, not announcing a trip you have already booked.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Someday, I want to live by the sea' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    有一天,我想住在海边。

This uses 有一天 for 'someday', 我想 for 'I want to', and 住在海边 for 'live by the sea'. You could also say 我希望有一天能住在海边 for a softer tone.

2Which word fits a broad life dream better: 目标 (mù biāo) or 梦想 (mèng xiǎng)? Why?

    Show a sample answer

梦想 fits better, because it refers to a heartfelt dream rather than a measurable goal.

目标 often suggests a concrete, step-by-step objective, such as a career target. 梦想 is broader and more emotional, which matches life hopes. In some contexts, however, a speaker may use 目标 for a personal aim, so both can appear.

3Turn this career goal into a life dream: 我想当经理。 (I want to be a manager.)

    Show a sample answer

    有一天,我希望开一家自己的小店。

The answer shifts from a job title to a broader life hope, using 有一天 and 希望. Other valid dreams are possible, such as 有一天,我想去很多国家旅行。 The key is the open timeline and personal wish.

    Take this with you

Use 有一天 plus 我想 or 我希望 to share broad life dreams in Mandarin, and save 目标 or 计划 for specific career goals.
