How to Say "Thank You, That Means a Lot" in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to receive thanks and compliments gracefully in Mandarin without self-deprecation, using phrases like 谢谢你,这对我很重要 and 你这么说我很开心.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Receiving thanks or a compliment well is its own skill in Mandarin. Many learners fall back on 哪里哪里 or 没有没有, deflecting praise the way textbooks once taught. But when someone says something that genuinely moves you, deflecting can feel cold. This lesson teaches you to accept warmth directly: 谢谢你,这对我很重要 (xièxie nǐ, zhè duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào), 你这么说我很开心 (nǐ zhème shuō wǒ hěn kāixīn), and softer variants for friends, colleagues, and elders. You will also learn how 这对我很重要 differs from simply saying 谢谢, and why sincerity beats modesty when the other person has offered real feeling.

    By the end, you can…

    • thank someone in Mandarin and say their words or help matter to me.
    • accept a compliment warmly without denying it or putting myself down.
    • choose between formal and casual receiving phrases for different relationships.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    谢谢你,这对我很重要。

Thank you, that means a lot to me.

xièxie nǐ, zhè duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào

The core phrase. Use when someone has done something meaningful for you. 对我 means 'to me'; 很重要 means 'very important.'

    你这么说,我很开心。

Hearing you say that makes me happy.

nǐ zhème shuō, wǒ hěn kāixīn

Best for receiving a compliment. 你这么说 literally means 'you say it this way,' acknowledging the speaker's words rather than arguing with them. Note the comma: 你这么说,我很开心.

    真的吗?谢谢你,我很感动。

Really? Thank you, I'm really touched.

zhēn de ma? xièxie nǐ, wǒ hěn gǎndòng

Use when the gesture is emotional, not just polite. 感动 gǎndòng means moved or touched, a deeper feeling than 开心.

    谢谢你一直记得。

    Thank you for always remembering.

    xièxie nǐ yìzhí jìde

For someone who remembered a detail about you. 一直 yìzhí means 'all along' or 'always,' showing the thoughtfulness mattered.

    有你在,真好。

It's really good to have you around.

    yǒu nǐ zài, zhēn hǎo

Warm and slightly intimate. Use with close friends, partners, or family, not with casual acquaintances or superiors.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 这对我很重要 (zhè duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào) means 'this is very important to me.' You can swap 这 for a specific thing: 你的帮助对我很重要 (nǐ de bāngzhù duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào, 'your help matters a lot to me') or 你的话对我很重要 (nǐ de huà duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào, 'your words matter a lot to me'). The structure is X + 对 + person + 很重要. To soften it, say 这对我真的很重要 (zhè duì wǒ zhēn de hěn zhòngyào), adding 真的 'really.' This pattern receives well because it names the impact on you instead of judging the other person.

    When to use it

Use 谢谢你,这对我很重要 when someone has helped, supported, or remembered you. Use 你这么说,我很开心 when someone praises you: it accepts the compliment without self-deprecation. With a close friend, 有你在,真好 feels warmer than a formal thank-you. With a teacher or senior colleague, stay with 谢谢您,这对我很重要 (xièxie nín, zhè duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào), using 您 nín for respect. Avoid 哪里哪里 (nǎli nǎli) here; it deflects praise and can make the other person's sincerity feel dismissed.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    这次的项目多亏了你,真的帮了大忙。

We couldn't have done this project without you; you really helped a lot.zhè cì de xiàngmù duōkuīle nǐ, zhēn de bāngle dà máng
    B

    谢谢你,这对我很重要。

Thank you, that means a lot to me.xièxie nǐ, zhè duì wǒ hěn zhòngyào
    A

    你太客气了,我只是做了该做的。

You're too kind; I just did what I was supposed to do.nǐ tài kèqi le, wǒ zhǐshì zuòle gāi zuò de
    B

    你这么说,我很开心。以后也请多指教。

Hearing you say that makes me happy. Please continue to guide me in the future.nǐ zhème shuō, wǒ hěn kāixīn. yǐhòu yě qǐng duō zhǐjiào

A little context goes a long way

In many Mandarin-speaking settings, deflecting praise with 哪里哪里 or 没有没有 is still common, especially among older speakers. But younger urban speakers often prefer a direct 谢谢 plus a feeling, because it treats the compliment as sincere. Match the other person: if they are formal, use 您 and 谢谢您; if they are casual, 你这么说,我很开心 sounds natural. Never argue against a compliment by insulting yourself; it can embarrass the giver.

    One thing to watch for

Responding to a compliment with 没有没有,我做得不好 (méiyǒu méiyǒu, wǒ zuò de bù hǎo, 'No no, I didn't do well').

Try this instead: This rejects the other person's judgment and can feel awkward. Instead, accept it: 谢谢你,你这么说我很开心 (xièxie nǐ, nǐ zhème shuō wǒ hěn kāixīn). You can still be modest later, but first receive the kindness.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1A colleague says your presentation was excellent. Give a warm Mandarin reply that accepts the compliment.

    Show a sample answer

    谢谢你,你这么说我很开心。

This thanks them and names your feeling. 这对我很重要 also works if the praise was especially meaningful.

2A friend remembers your birthday and calls you. What phrase shows the thoughtfulness mattered?

    Show a sample answer

    谢谢你一直记得,这对我很重要。

一直记得 highlights that they remembered over time, and 这对我很重要 states the impact. 有你在,真好 is a warmer alternative for close friends.

3Your teacher helps you after class. Which pronoun and phrase fit best?

    Show a sample answer

    谢谢您,这对我很重要。

您 nín shows respect to a teacher. 你 would be too casual here unless your teacher has invited informal address.

    Take this with you

Receive thanks and compliments with 谢谢你 plus a feeling, not with self-deprecation. 这对我很重要 and 你这么说,我很开心 let the other person know their words landed.
