Chinese for Evaluating Relationship Change: 我们更近了 vs 我们疏远了
Learn intermediate Mandarin phrases to reflect on whether a bond has grown closer or drifted apart, using 越来越, 变得, and 疏远 naturally.

In Chinese, talking about how a relationship has changed is not the same as describing what the relationship is. This lesson focuses on evaluation: saying that two people have grown closer, drifted apart, or stayed the same. You will learn five core phrases and two patterns that let you reflect on change over time. The key grammar includes 越来越 (more and more), 变得 (become), and the verb 疏远 (drift apart). Pay attention to word order: time or change expressions usually come before the main verb, and 了 often marks a new state. By the end, you will be able to evaluate a bond in a calm, reflective way, not just list facts about it.
By the end, you can…
- say that a relationship has grown closer or drifted apart using 越来越 and 变得.
- ask someone to reflect on how a bond has changed over time.
- use 疏远 correctly as a verb and describe a gradual change.
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

我们更近了。
We've grown closer.
wǒmen gèng jìn le
Use 更 for 'even more' and 了 for a changed state. This is a direct, warm evaluation of a bond.
我们疏远了。
We've drifted apart.
wǒmen shūyuǎn le
疏远 is a verb meaning 'to become distant.' It evaluates the relationship, not just physical distance.
我们的关系越来越亲密了。
Our relationship is getting closer and closer.
wǒmen de guānxi yuèláiyuè qīnmì le
越来越 + adjective shows a gradual increase. 亲密 is a positive, slightly formal word for emotional closeness.
我们之间变得有点生疏了。
Things between us have become a bit distant.
wǒmen zhījiān biànde yǒudiǎn shēngshū le
变得 + adjective describes a change into a new state. 生疏 often implies less familiarity or awkwardness.
你觉得我们的关系有什么变化吗?
Do you think our relationship has changed in any way?
nǐ juéde wǒmen de guānxi yǒu shénme biànhuà ma
A reflective question. 有什么变化 invites evaluation without assuming a direction.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

Useful pattern
To evaluate change in a bond, use 越来越 + adjective for a gradual increase, and 变得 + adjective + 了 for a shift into a new state. For example: 我们越来越亲近了 (We are getting closer and closer) and 我们变得陌生了 (We have become like strangers). Notice that 了 often appears at the end to show the new situation. If you want to soften the evaluation, add 有点 (a bit): 我们变得有点疏远了 (We have become a bit distant). Do not use 是...的 for this; that pattern emphasizes time or manner, not change.
When to use it
Use these patterns when you are reflecting on a relationship over time, not just stating its current state. For example, after not seeing a friend for a year, you might say 我们好像疏远了不少 (It seems we've drifted apart quite a bit). In a calm conversation, 我觉得我们更近了 (I feel we've grown closer) is warmer than a plain 我们是好朋友. Avoid using 疏远 for temporary busyness; it implies emotional distance. If you just mean you haven't talked much, say 我们最近联系少了 (We've had less contact lately).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你觉得我们这几年关系有什么变化吗?
Do you think our relationship has changed in these past few years?nǐ juéde wǒmen zhè jǐ nián guānxi yǒu shénme biànhuà ma我觉得我们更近了,虽然见面少了。
I think we've grown closer, even though we meet less often.wǒ juéde wǒmen gèng jìn le, suīrán jiànmiàn shǎo le我也有同感。以前我们有点生疏,现在越来越亲密。
I feel the same. Before, we were a bit distant, but now we're getting closer and closer.wǒ yě yǒu tónggǎn. yǐqián wǒmen yǒudiǎn shēngshū, xiànzài yuèláiyuè qīnmì对,关键是愿意花时间聊天。
Right, the key is being willing to spend time talking.duì, guānjiàn shì yuànyì huā shíjiān liáotiānA little context goes a long way
In Mandarin, evaluating a relationship openly can feel direct. 疏远 is not always negative; it can be a neutral observation. However, saying 我们疏远了 to someone's face may sound like an accusation. To keep it reflective, add 好像 (seems) or 我觉得 (I feel): 我觉得我们好像疏远了. Also, 亲密 is warmer and slightly more formal than 近; use 近 for everyday closeness and 亲密 for emotional intimacy.
One thing to watch for
Using 疏远 as an adjective with 很, as in 我们很疏远.
Try this instead: 疏远 works as a verb or a change-of-state verb, not a simple adjective with 很. Say 我们疏远了 (We've drifted apart) or 我们变得疏远了 (We've become distant). If you want a stative adjective, use 生疏: 我们有点生疏 (We're a bit distant).
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.
1How would you say 'Our relationship is getting closer and closer' using 越来越?
Show a sample answer
我们的关系越来越亲密了。
越来越 + adjective expresses a gradual increase. 亲密 is a valid choice; 近 also works but is less formal.
2Translate: 'We've drifted apart.' Use 疏远.
Show a sample answer
我们疏远了。
疏远 functions as a verb here, and 了 marks the new state. You could also say 我们变得疏远了 for emphasis on the change.
3What is a softer way to ask if a bond has changed?

你觉得我们的关系有什么变化吗?
This question invites evaluation without assuming a direction. 有什么变化 is neutral and reflective.
To evaluate a bond in Chinese, use 越来越 + adjective for gradual closeness and 变得 + adjective + 了 for a shift. Keep 疏远 as a verb, and soften direct evaluations with 好像 or 我觉得。
