Friends planning a trip around a map in a warmly lit café

Buying a local SIM card in China is one of the first practical tasks you will do after arriving, and you can handle it in simple Mandarin. In this lesson you will learn the key sentence 我需要一张带流量的手机卡 (wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ), which means 'I need a SIM card with data.' You will also learn how to ask about data amount, price, and monthly plans, and how to say you have a passport. The focus is mobile connectivity: data, prepaid cards, and phone plans. You do not need to know many characters to succeed; short, polite sentences work well in a phone shop.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask for a SIM card with data using 我需要一张带流量的手机卡。
    • ask how much data a plan includes and how much it costs per month.
    • say I have a passport and ask whether it is needed to buy a SIM card.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我需要一张带流量的手机卡。

I need a SIM card with data.

wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ

The main request. 手机卡 (shǒujīkǎ) is a common everyday word for a SIM card; 流量 (liúliàng) means mobile data.

    这个套餐有多少流量?

How much data does this plan have?

    zhège tàocān yǒu duōshao liúliàng

Use 套餐 (tàocān) for a phone plan or package. 多少 (duōshao) asks about an amount.

    一个月多少钱?

How much is it per month?

    yí ge yuè duōshao qián

A simple way to ask the monthly price. You can also say 每个月多少钱 (měi ge yuè duōshao qián).

    我有护照。

    I have a passport.

    wǒ yǒu hùzhào

Useful when the staff ask for ID. In mainland China, a passport is normally required for a foreigner to register a SIM card.

    我要预付卡。

    I want a prepaid card.

    wǒ yào yùfùkǎ

预付卡 (yùfùkǎ) means a prepaid SIM card. If you are not sure, you can also say 我要充值的卡 (wǒ yào chōngzhí de kǎ).

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 我要 + noun means 'I want...' and is very useful in shops: 我要一张手机卡 (wǒ yào yì zhāng shǒujīkǎ) 'I want a SIM card.' To add a description, put 带 (dài) before the noun: 带流量的手机卡 (dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ) 'a SIM card with data.' The full request is 我需要一张带流量的手机卡 (wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ). 需要 (xūyào) means 'need' and sounds a little more polite or formal than 要 (yào). For amounts, use 多少 (duōshao): 多少流量 (duōshao liúliàng) 'how much data,' 多少钱 (duōshao qián) 'how much money.' Measure words matter: 一张手机卡 (yì zhāng shǒujīkǎ) uses 张 (zhāng) for flat or card-like objects.

    When to use it

Use these sentences at a mobile phone shop or carrier counter. Start with 你好 (nǐ hǎo), then say 我需要一张带流量的手机卡 (wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ). If the staff show you plans, ask 这个套餐有多少流量 (zhège tàocān yǒu duōshao liúliàng) and 一个月多少钱 (yí ge yuè duōshao qián). When they ask for ID, answer 我有护照 (wǒ yǒu hùzhào). If you want to keep the conversation simple, you can point to a plan and say 我要这个 (wǒ yào zhège) 'I want this one.' In mainland China, shop staff usually speak Mandarin, but in some regions you may hear local Mandarin accents; speaking slowly and repeating numbers helps.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,我需要一张带流量的手机卡。

Hello, I need a SIM card with data.nǐ hǎo, wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ
    B

    好的。这个套餐有三十个G的流量,一个月九十九块。

Okay. This plan has 30 GB of data, 99 yuan per month.hǎo de. zhège tàocān yǒu sānshí ge G de liúliàng, yí ge yuè jiǔshíjiǔ kuài
    A

    一个月多少钱?我有护照。

How much is it per month? I have a passport.yí ge yuè duōshao qián? wǒ yǒu hùzhào
    B

    九十九块。请给我看你的护照。

99 yuan. Please show me your passport.jiǔshíjiǔ kuài. qǐng gěi wǒ kàn nǐ de hùzhào

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, buying a SIM card usually requires real-name registration, so bring your passport. Prepaid plans are common, and data is often counted in GB, written as G in speech. Prices and plan names change often, so treat numbers in this lesson as examples, not fixed prices. A polite 你好 and 谢谢 goes a long way, and staff may switch to simple English if they can.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我要流量卡 (wǒ yào liúliàng kǎ) and expecting it to mean a normal phone SIM card.

Try this instead: 流量卡 (liúliàng kǎ) often refers to a data-only card or a special data package, not always a regular phone SIM. For a normal SIM card with data, say 我需要一张带流量的手机卡 (wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ) or 我要一张手机卡,带流量的 (wǒ yào yì zhāng shǒujīkǎ, dài liúliàng de).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I need a SIM card with data' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

我需要一张带流量的手机卡。 (wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ)

This uses 需要 'need,' 一张 as the measure word for a card, 带 'with,' and 流量 'data.' A simpler alternative is 我要一张带流量的手机卡 (wǒ yào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ).

2Ask how much data a plan has.

    Show a sample answer

这个套餐有多少流量? (zhège tàocān yǒu duōshao liúliàng)

套餐 means 'plan' or 'package,' and 多少 asks 'how much.' You can also point and ask 这个有多少流量 (zhège yǒu duōshao liúliàng).

3Say that you have a passport.

    Show a sample answer

    我有护照。 (wǒ yǒu hùzhào)

有 means 'have,' and 护照 means 'passport.' This is the key sentence when the staff ask for ID. If you do not have it with you, you can say 我没有护照 (wǒ méiyǒu hùzhào).

    Take this with you

Remember the core request 我需要一张带流量的手机卡 (wǒ xūyào yì zhāng dài liúliàng de shǒujīkǎ), ask 一个月多少钱 (yí ge yuè duōshao qián), and bring your passport for registration.
