Exchanging money at a bank or currency exchange office in China requires specific vocabulary and phrases that differ from simply using an ATM. This lesson teaches you how to request a currency exchange, ask about rates, and complete the transaction in Mandarin. You will learn to say 'I'd like to exchange dollars for euros' and understand the exchange rate. We focus on bank counter interactions, not ATM withdrawals, so you can confidently handle in-person exchanges.

    By the end, you can…

    • request to exchange one currency for another at a bank or exchange office.
    • ask about the exchange rate and understand the response.
    • complete a currency exchange transaction and ask about fees.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    我想把美元换成欧元。

I'd like to exchange US dollars for euros.

Wǒ xiǎng bǎ měiyuán huàn chéng ōuyuán.

Use this at a bank counter or exchange office to state your request. '把' (bǎ) marks the object being exchanged, and the verb phrase '换成' (huàn chéng) follows it.

    今天的汇率是多少?

    What is today's exchange rate?

    Jīntiān de huìlǜ shì duōshao?

Ask this to find out the current rate before agreeing to exchange. The answer will be a number like '1美元等于0.85欧元' (1 USD equals 0.85 EUR).

    手续费是多少?

    What is the service fee?

    Shǒuxùfèi shì duōshao?

Banks and exchange offices may charge a commission. Ask this to know the total cost.

    我要换五百美元。

I want to exchange 500 US dollars.

    Wǒ yào huàn wǔbǎi měiyuán.

Specify the amount you want to exchange. Replace '五百' (500) with your desired amount.

    请给我小面额的钞票。

Please give me small denomination notes.

Qǐng gěi wǒ xiǎo miàn'é de chāopiào.

Useful if you prefer smaller bills. '小面额' means small denomination.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern '我想把A换成B' (Wǒ xiǎng bǎ A huàn chéng B) means 'I'd like to exchange A for B.' For example, '我想把美元换成欧元' (I'd like to exchange USD for EUR) or '我想把人民币换成美元' (I'd like to exchange RMB for USD). You can also use '换' (huàn) alone: '我想换钱' (I want to exchange money). To ask about the rate, use '汇率是多少?' (What is the exchange rate?). The response might be '1美元换0.85欧元' (1 USD exchanges for 0.85 EUR).

    When to use it

Use these phrases at a bank counter (银行柜台) or a dedicated currency exchange office (货币兑换处). They are not for ATMs, where you typically just withdraw local currency. At a bank, you'll often need your passport. Start with '我想换钱' to signal your intention, then specify currencies and amount. If you want to know the rate before committing, ask '汇率是多少?' first. After the transaction, you might hear '请在这里签字' (Please sign here). Always count your money before leaving.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In China, banks and official exchange offices are the standard places for currency exchange. ATMs are primarily for withdrawing local currency using a foreign card, not for exchanging one foreign currency for another. When exchanging, you'll need your passport for identification. Rates can vary slightly between banks, so it's okay to ask. Politeness is appreciated: use '您好' (hello) and '谢谢' (thank you). Tipping is not customary in banks.

    One thing to watch for

Using '换' without specifying currencies, e.g., '我想换钱' when you mean to exchange dollars for euros.

Try this instead: Be specific: '我想把美元换成欧元' (I'd like to exchange USD for EUR). If you just say '我想换钱', the teller might assume you want to exchange foreign currency for RMB, which is common for tourists.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I'd like to exchange US dollars for euros' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我想把美元换成欧元。

This uses the pattern '把A换成B'. You could also say '我想换美元成欧元', but the '把' construction is more natural.

2What question would you ask to find out the exchange rate?

    Show a sample answer

    今天的汇率是多少?

This asks 'What is today's exchange rate?' You can also ask '汇率是多少?' without '今天的'.

3If you want to exchange 300 US dollars, what would you say?

    Show a sample answer

    我要换三百美元。

Replace '五百' with '三百'. You could also say '我想换三百美元'.

    Take this with you

At a Chinese bank or exchange office, use '我想把美元换成欧元' to state your request, ask '汇率是多少?' for the rate, and '手续费是多少?' for fees. Always bring your passport. Remember, this is different from using an ATM, which is for withdrawing local currency.
