Mandarin Chinese: Asking for Advice with 你觉得我该怎么办?

Learn to seek opinions and advice in Mandarin by describing a situation and asking 你觉得我该怎么办? or 有什么建议吗?. This lesson focuses on getting guidance, not requesting a favor.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

In Mandarin, asking for advice is different from asking someone to do something for you. To seek guidance, you first describe the situation, then ask for the other person's opinion. (What do you think I should do?) and 有什么建议吗? (Any advice?). In this lesson, you will learn how to present a problem and invite suggestions. You will also practice the difference between asking for advice and asking for a favor. By the end, you will be able to handle a simple conversation where you explain your situation and ask for guidance politely.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a simple problem in Mandarin.
    • ask for advice using 你觉得我该怎么办? or 有什么建议吗?.
    • distinguish asking for advice from asking for a favor.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

What do you think I should do?

nǐ juéde wǒ gāi zěnme bàn?

Use when you want someone's opinion on your situation. It is neutral and common among friends and colleagues.

Any advice? / Do you have any suggestions?

    yǒu shénme jiànyì ma?

A polite way to ask for suggestions. Often used after describing a problem.

    I have a problem. / I ran into a problem.

    wǒ yùdào yí gè wèntí.

Use this to introduce your situation before asking for advice.

If you were me, what would you do?

rúguǒ shì nǐ, nǐ huì zěnme zuò?

A more personal way to ask for advice, inviting the other person to imagine themselves in your position.

I'd like to hear your opinion.

wǒ xiǎng tīngting nǐ de yìjiàn.

Shows respect for the other person's view. Use when you want their perspective, not a favor.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask for advice, use the pattern: Situation + 你觉得我该怎么办? or 有什么建议吗?. (I have an exam tomorrow, but I don't feel well. What do you think I should do?). Another pattern is 如果是你,你会怎么做? (If you were me, what would you do?). You can also say (I'd like to hear your opinion). These patterns focus on getting the other person's thoughts, not asking them to act for you.

    When to use it

Use these phrases when you face a decision and want someone's perspective. For example, if you can't decide whether to change jobs, you can say (I'm thinking about changing jobs. What do you think I should do?). This is different from asking for a favor, like 你能帮我搬家吗? (Can you help me move?). Asking for advice invites opinions; asking for a favor requests action. In Chinese culture, it's common to first explain the situation, then ask for advice. This shows you value the other person's opinion and gives them context.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

I've been worried lately. My job is very busy, but I want to learn Chinese. What do you think I should do?wǒ zuìjìn hěn fánnǎo. wǒ de gōngzuò hěn máng, dànshì wǒ xiǎng xué Zhōngwén. nǐ juéde wǒ gāi zěnme bàn?
    B

You can set aside a little time each day to study, like in the morning or evening.nǐ kěyǐ měitiān chōu yìdiǎn shíjiān xué, bǐrú zǎoshang huòzhě wǎnshang.
    A

If you were me, what would you do?rúguǒ shì nǐ, nǐ huì zěnme zuò?
    B

If it were me, I would use a phone app to study, ten minutes a day. That way it won't be too tiring.rúguǒ shì wǒ, wǒ huì yòng shǒujī app xué, měitiān shí fēnzhōng. zhèyàng bú huì tài lèi.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin-speaking contexts, asking for advice often involves first explaining your situation in some detail. This shows you trust the other person and value their opinion. Directly asking 你觉得我该怎么办? is common among friends and peers. With someone older or in a higher position, it's more polite to say (I'd like to hear your opinion) using 您 (nín) for 'you'. Avoid asking for advice too abruptly without context; it may seem like you just want a quick answer.

    One thing to watch for

(Can you help me?) when you actually want advice.

Try this instead: If you want advice, say 你觉得我该怎么办? or 有什么建议吗?. 你能帮我吗? asks for a favor, like 你能帮我搬家吗? (Can you help me move?). To ask for advice, use (I'd like to hear your opinion).

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'What do you think I should do?' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

This is the standard way to ask for advice. You can also say 如果是你,你会怎么做?, which is slightly more personal.

2What is the difference between 有什么建议吗? and 你能帮我吗??

    Show a sample answer

有什么建议吗? asks for advice; 你能帮我吗? asks for a favor.

有什么建议吗? means 'Any advice?' and seeks opinions. 你能帮我吗? means 'Can you help me?' and requests action. Both are valid in different contexts.

3How would you politely ask an older person for their opinion?

    Show a sample answer

Using 您 (nín) instead of 你 (nǐ) shows respect. You can also say This is appropriate for elders or superiors.

    Take this with you

To seek advice in Mandarin, describe your situation, then ask 你觉得我该怎么办? or 有什么建议吗?. Remember: advice asks for opinions, not actions.
