How to Offer Suggestions in Mandarin Chinese: 也许你应该 and 你有没有想过

Learn elementary Mandarin ways to give supportive suggestions with 也许你应该 (maybe you should) and 你有没有想过 (have you thought about), plus softer options like 要不要 and 不如.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

Offering a suggestion is different from offering help. When you offer help, you do something for someone: 我帮你 (wǒ bāng nǐ, I'll help you). When you offer a suggestion, you give someone guidance and let them decide. In Mandarin, two very useful patterns are 也许你应该 (yěxǔ nǐ yīnggāi, maybe you should) and 你有没有想过 (nǐ yǒu méi yǒu xiǎng guò, have you thought about). This lesson teaches these patterns at elementary level, with pinyin and tone marks, so you can support a friend without sounding pushy.

    By the end, you can…

    • offer a gentle suggestion using 也许你应该.
    • ask 你有没有想过 to introduce an idea for someone to consider.
    • soften a suggestion with 要不要 or 不如.
    • respond supportively when someone gives me a suggestion.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    也许你应该休息一下。

Maybe you should rest a little.

    yěxǔ nǐ yīnggāi xiūxi yīxià

A gentle suggestion when someone looks tired. 一下 softens the verb.

    你有没有想过换工作?

Have you thought about changing jobs?

nǐ yǒu méi yǒu xiǎng guò huàn gōngzuò

Use 有没有 to ask about past experience; 过 marks the experience of thinking about it.

    要不要我陪你一起去?

How about I go with you?

yào bu yào wǒ péi nǐ yìqǐ qù

A friendly suggestion that also offers company. 要不要 literally means want or not want.

    不如先问问他。

    Why not ask him first?

    bùrú xiān wèn wen tā

不如 suggests a better option. 先 means first, and the repeated 问问 makes it casual.

    你可以试试看。

You could give it a try.

    nǐ kěyǐ shìshi kàn

A soft way to suggest trying something. 试试看 means try and see.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 也许 + 你 + 应该 + verb gives a gentle suggestion: 也许你应该早点睡 (yěxǔ nǐ yīnggāi zǎodiǎn shuì, maybe you should sleep earlier). 也许 means maybe, and 应该 means should. To ask someone to consider an idea, use 你有没有想过 + verb phrase: 你有没有想过搬到上海?(nǐ yǒu méi yǒu xiǎng guò bān dào Shànghǎi, have you thought about moving to Shanghai?). 过 shows the person has had the experience of thinking about it. You can also use 要不要 (yào bu yào, how about) or 不如 (bùrú, why not) for a lighter tone.

    When to use it

Use 也许你应该 when you want to be supportive but not commanding. It works well with friends, classmates, and people your age: 也许你应该跟老师谈谈 (yěxǔ nǐ yīnggāi gēn lǎoshī tán tan, maybe you should talk with the teacher). Use 你有没有想过 when you want to introduce a new idea without pressure: 你有没有想过学中文?(nǐ yǒu méi yǒu xiǎng guò xué Zhōngwén, have you thought about learning Chinese?). If the person is older or in a higher position, 要不要 and 不如 sound more polite than a direct 你应该. Avoid using 你应该 alone with strangers, because it can sound like an order.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

A little context goes a long way

In Mandarin, suggestions often sound softer when they include 一下, 试试看, or a question form like 要不要. Direct 你应该 can feel strong, so many speakers add 也许 or turn it into a question. With elders or teachers, use 您 (nín, you, polite) and phrases like 要不要 or 不如 instead of a bare 你应该. Politeness here is about giving the other person room to choose, not about avoiding the topic.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 你应该休息一下 to a new acquaintance or teacher as a direct command.

Try this instead: Soften it with 也许 or a question: 也许您应该休息一下 (yěxǔ nín yīnggāi xiūxi yīxià, maybe you should rest a little) or 要不要休息一下?(yào bu yào xiūxi yīxià, how about resting a little?). The suggestion stays clear, but the other person keeps the choice.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'Maybe you should drink more water' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    也许你应该多喝水。

也许 (maybe) + 你应该 (you should) + 多喝水 (drink more water). 多 before a verb means do more of it. 也许你可以多喝水 is also acceptable and even softer.

2Turn 'You should talk to your friend' into a question suggestion using 你有没有想过.

    Show a sample answer

    你有没有想过跟朋友谈谈?

你有没有想过 introduces the idea as something to consider. 跟朋友谈谈 means talk with a friend; repeating 谈 makes it casual. 你有没有想过和朋友聊聊 is also fine.

3Which sounds softer to an older person: 你应该早点睡 or 要不要早点睡?

    Show a sample answer

    要不要早点睡?

要不要 turns the suggestion into a choice, which is more polite with elders. 你应该早点睡 is grammatically correct but can sound like an order. Adding 也许 also softens it.

    Take this with you

Use 也许你应该 for a gentle 'maybe you should' and 你有没有想过 for 'have you thought about'; soften both with 要不要 or 不如 when you want to be especially polite.
