In this workshop, you will learn to ask for advice and give suggestions in Chinese. You will listen to native speakers and practice speaking in realistic scenarios. The focus is on using common phrases to seek help and offer solutions. By the end, you will be able to handle simple advice-seeking conversations.

    Asking for Advice

When you have a problem, you can ask for advice in several ways. A simple question is «你觉得我该怎么办?», which means 'What do you think I should do?' Another common phrase is «有什么建议吗?», meaning 'Any advice?' or 'Do you have any suggestions?' If you want to describe your situation first, you can say «我遇到一个问题。», which means 'I have a problem.' To ask someone to imagine your situation, use «如果是你,你会怎么做?», meaning 'If you were me, what would you do?' These phrases help you start a conversation about your issue.

    Giving Suggestions

When someone asks for advice, you can respond with suggestions. For example, if someone says «我最近很烦恼。我的工作很忙,但是我想学中文。你觉得我该怎么办?», which means 'I've been worried lately. My job is very busy, but I want to learn Chinese. What do you think I should do?', you might reply with «你可以每天抽一点时间学,比如早上或者晚上。», meaning 'You can set aside a little time each day to study, like in the morning or evening.' Another way to give advice is to say what you would do in their place. If asked «如果是你,你会怎么做?», which means 'If you were me, what would you do?', you could answer «如果是我,我会用手机app学,每天十分钟。这样不会太累。», meaning 'If it were me, I would use a phone app to study, ten minutes a day. That way it won't be too tiring.'

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

    Guided Exchange: Asking for Advice

You are talking to a friend about a problem. You want to ask for advice. Your friend will respond with a suggestion.

Your task: Read the role of Person A aloud: «我最近很烦恼。我的工作很忙,但是我想学中文。你觉得我该怎么办?». Then listen to the recorded Person B response «你可以每天抽一点时间学,比如早上或者晚上。». After that, switch roles: you now speak Person B's line «你可以每天抽一点时间学,比如早上或者晚上。» while your partner (or the recording) reads Person A's question.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Best Response

You will hear a request for advice. Choose the most appropriate reply from the options.

Your task: Listen to «如果是你,你会怎么做?», which means 'If you were me, what would you do?' Which reply is suitable? Option 1: «你可以每天抽一点时间学,比如早上或者晚上。» (You can set aside a little time each day to study, like in the morning or evening.) Option 2: «我遇到一个问题。» (I have a problem.)

    3

    Recall and Role-Play: Giving Advice

You will recall phrases for asking and giving advice. Then, role-play a conversation with a partner.

Your task: First, recall the phrase for asking 'What do you think I should do?' (Answer: «你觉得我该怎么办?»). Then, recall a phrase for giving a suggestion about studying (Answer: «你可以每天抽一点时间学,比如早上或者晚上。» or «如果是我,我会用手机app学,每天十分钟。这样不会太累。»). Now, with a partner, role-play: Person A asks for advice using «我最近很烦恼。我的工作很忙,但是我想学中文。你觉得我该怎么办?», Person B gives a suggestion using «你可以每天抽一点时间学,比如早上或者晚上。». Then Person A follows up with «如果是你,你会怎么做?», and Person B answers using «如果是我,我会用手机app学,每天十分钟。这样不会太累。».

    Common questions

What if I don't understand the recording?

You can replay the recording as many times as needed. Focus on the overall meaning rather than every word. Use the English translations provided to help you.

    Can I practice alone?

Yes, you can play both roles by reading the lines aloud. You can also record yourself and compare with the native speaker. There is no automatic assessment, so self-check with the success criteria.
