Asking for a Translator or Language Help in Mandarin Chinese

Learn to ask whether someone has a translator, request an interpreter, and explain that you do not understand Chinese, using polite Mandarin patterns for real situations.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

When you cannot speak Chinese well, the most useful sentence is often a question about help, not a vocabulary word. In this lesson you will learn how to ask 你有翻译吗? (Nǐ yǒu fānyì ma?), how to request an interpreter, and how to say clearly that you do not understand. You will also learn the difference between 翻译 as a person and 翻译 as an action, and how to use 会 (huì) to ask whether someone can help. These phrases work in hotels, hospitals, police stations, airports and business meetings. Keep your sentences short and polite, and always be ready to repeat them slowly.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether someone has a translator or interpreter.
    • request language help and say that I do not understand Chinese.
    • ask a person to speak more slowly or to write something down.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    你有翻译吗?

    Do you have a translator?

    nee yoh fahn-yee ma

General polite question. 你 is informal singular; use 您 (nín) with officials, doctors or elders.

    我需要一个翻译。

    I need a translator.

    waw shü-yow ee-guh fahn-yee

Direct but polite. 一个 means 'one'; you can also say 我需要翻译 without 一个.

    你会说英语吗?

    Can you speak English?

    nee hway shwaw ying-yü ma

会 (huì) means 'can, know how to'. This asks about ability, not permission.

    对不起,我听不懂。

    Sorry, I don't understand what I hear.

    dway-boo-chee, waw ting boo dong

听不懂 means you hear the sounds but cannot understand the meaning. Use 看不懂 for written text.

    请说慢一点。

Please speak a little more slowly.

    ching shwaw mahn ee-dyen

一点 after an adjective softens it: 慢一点 'a bit slower'. Add 请 to keep it polite.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 你有……吗? (Nǐ yǒu … ma?) means 'Do you have …?' Put a noun between 有 and 吗: 你有翻译吗? 'Do you have a translator?' 你有中文地图吗? 'Do you have a Chinese map?' The final 吗 turns a statement into a yes/no question. Do not add 吗 to a question that already has a question word such as 谁 (shéi, who) or 哪里 (nǎlǐ, where). To ask about ability, use 你会……吗? (Nǐ huì … ma?): 你会说英语吗? 'Can you speak English?' 你会写汉字吗? 'Can you write Chinese characters?'

    When to use it

Use 你有翻译吗? when you are speaking to a receptionist, nurse or staff member who may arrange help. Use 我需要一个翻译 when you are stating your need directly, for example at a hospital or police station. If the person answers 没有 (méiyǒu, 'we don't have'), do not stop there; ask 你可以帮我找一个吗? (Nǐ kěyǐ bāng wǒ zhǎo yī gè ma?) 'Can you help me find one?' For a professional interpreter, Chinese often says 口译 (kǒuyì) for spoken interpreting and 笔译 (bǐyì) for written translation, but 翻译 is the everyday word and is understood everywhere.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,请问你有翻译吗?

Hello, excuse me, do you have a translator?nee-how, ching-wun nee yoh fahn-yee ma
    B

    对不起,没有。你会说中文吗?

Sorry, we don't have one. Can you speak Chinese?dway-boo-chee, may-yoh. nee hway shwaw jong-wun ma
    A

    我会说一点,但是听不懂。你可以帮我找一个翻译吗?

I can speak a little, but I don't understand. Can you help me find a translator?waw hway shwaw ee-dyen, dan-shur ting boo dong. nee kuh-yee bang waw zhao ee-guh fahn-yee ma
    B

    可以。请等一下,我打电话。

Sure. Please wait a moment, I'll make a phone call.kuh-yee. ching dung ee-sha, waw da dyen-hwa

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, 翻译 is the normal word for both a translator and an interpreter, and it is not rude to ask for one. With officials, medical staff or older people, use 您 (nín) instead of 你, and begin with 请问 (qǐngwèn, 'may I ask'). In Taiwan, people also say 翻譯 (traditional form) and may use 口譯 for a spoken interpreter. Politeness in Chinese often comes from 请, 请问 and a soft tone rather than from long sentences.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我不懂你说什么 (Wǒ bù dǒng nǐ shuō shénme) as a complete sentence, which can sound abrupt or like a complaint.

Try this instead: Use 对不起,我听不懂 (Duìbuqǐ, wǒ tīng bù dǒng) or 请说慢一点 (Qǐng shuō màn yīdiǎn). These are softer and clearly describe the language problem rather than blaming the speaker.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask a hotel receptionist, politely, whether they have a translator?

    Show a sample answer

    请问,你有翻译吗?(Qǐngwèn, nǐ yǒu fānyì ma?)

请问 softens the question, and 你有翻译吗 follows the 有……吗 pattern. With a formal setting, 您有翻译吗? is also correct.

2You hear Chinese but cannot understand the meaning. Which phrase fits better: 我听不懂 or 我不听?

    Show a sample answer

    我听不懂 (Wǒ tīng bù dǒng).

听不懂 means you hear but cannot understand. 我不听 means 'I am not listening', which sounds rude and is not about language ability.

3How do you ask someone to speak more slowly?

    Show a sample answer

    请说慢一点。(Qǐng shuō màn yīdiǎn.)

请 makes it polite, 说 is 'speak', and 慢一点 means 'a little slower'. 请说慢一点儿 is also acceptable in northern speech.

    Take this with you

Keep three sentences ready: 你有翻译吗? to ask about a translator, 我需要一个翻译 to state your need, and 我听不懂 to explain the barrier. Add 请 and 请问 to stay polite.
