Useful pattern
To narrate past events, use time words like 昨天 (zuótiān, yesterday) or 上个星期 (shàng ge xīngqī, last week) at the beginning. Add the particle 了 (le) after the verb to indicate completion. For example: 昨天我去了公园。 (Zuótiān wǒ qù le gōngyuán.) I went to the park yesterday. For experiences, use 过 (guò): 我去过北京。 (Wǒ qù guò Běijīng.) I have been to Beijing. To show sequence, use 然后 (ránhòu, then) and 结果 (jiéguǒ, as a result).
When to use it
Use these patterns when telling a story about something that happened in the past. Start with a time word to set the context, then use 了 to show completed actions. Use 过 when talking about life experiences. For example: 我昨天看了一个电影,然后我回家了。 (Wǒ zuótiān kàn le yī gè diànyǐng, ránhòu wǒ huí jiā le.) I watched a movie yesterday, then I went home. To add suspense, pause before the result and say 结果... (jiéguǒ...).
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
你绝对想不到昨天发生了什么!
You won't believe what happened yesterday!nǐ juéduì xiǎng bù dào zuótiān fāshēng le shénme!什么事?快说!
What? Tell me quickly!shénme shì? kuài shuō!我在路上捡到了一个钱包,里面有很多钱。
I found a wallet on the street with a lot of money in it.wǒ zài lùshang jiǎn dào le yī gè qiánbāo, lǐmiàn yǒu hěnduō qián.真的吗?然后呢?
Really? And then?zhēnde ma? ránhòu ne?A little context goes a long way
In Chinese storytelling, it's common to use expressive phrases like '你绝对想不到' to engage listeners. Politeness may involve not boasting; if the story is about a good deed, downplay it with '没什么' (méi shénme, it's nothing). Also, when telling stories to elders, use respectful terms like 您 (nín) instead of 你.
One thing to watch for
Using 了 (le) with stative verbs like 是 (shì) to indicate past tense, e.g., *我是了学生 (wǒ shì le xuésheng).
Try this instead: 了 is not used with 是 for past tense. Simply use time words: 我昨天是学生 is odd; instead say 我昨天还是学生 (wǒ zuótiān háishì xuésheng, I was still a student yesterday). For past tense of 是, context or time words suffice.
