Mandarin Chinese for a Lockout: Ask for a Locksmith and Understand the Wait

Learn to say you are locked out, ask someone to call a locksmith, and ask how long the wait will be, using polite Mandarin that works on the phone or at a hotel front desk.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.

If you are locked out in a Chinese-speaking place, the fastest help usually comes from a phone call. This lesson gives you a small, reliable set of Mandarin sentences for that exact situation. You will learn how to state the problem clearly, ask a bystander, neighbor, or front-desk worker to call a locksmith, and ask how long the locksmith will take. The grammar stays simple: no verb conjugation, no articles, and no plural endings are needed. Instead, Mandarin marks time and completion with particles and time words, and politeness with phrases such as 请 (qǐng, please) and 麻烦你 (máfan nǐ, sorry to trouble you). Keep your sentences short, say your address slowly, and confirm the wait time before you hang up.

    By the end, you can…

    • say that I am locked out and that my key is inside.
    • politely ask someone to call a locksmith for me.
    • ask how long the locksmith will take to arrive.
    • give my address and phone number in a short, clear sentence.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我被锁在外面了。

    I'm locked out.

wǒ bèi suǒ zài wàimiàn le

The most direct way to state the problem. 被 (bèi) marks that something happened to you; 了 (le) shows the situation is now true.

    我的钥匙在屋里。

    My key is inside.

wǒ de yàoshi zài wū li

Use this to explain why you cannot get in. 在 (zài) means 'be at/in'; 屋里 (wū li) means 'inside the room or home'.

    你能帮我叫一个开锁师傅吗?

Can you call a locksmith for me?

nǐ néng bāng wǒ jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu ma

A polite request to a friend, neighbor, or staff member. 开锁师傅 (kāisuǒ shīfu) is the everyday term for a locksmith who opens locks.

    开锁师傅多久能到?

How long will the locksmith take to arrive?

kāisuǒ shīfu duō jiǔ néng dào

Ask this before ending the call. 多久 (duō jiǔ) means 'how long'; 能到 (néng dào) means 'can arrive'.

    我的地址是……,电话是……。

My address is …, and my phone number is ….

wǒ de dìzhǐ shì …, diànhuà shì …

Fill in the blanks slowly. Say numbers one digit at a time if the listener seems unsure.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The core pattern is 我被锁在外面了 (wǒ bèi suǒ zài wàimiàn le), 'I am locked out.' Then add a request with 你能帮我……吗? (nǐ néng bāng wǒ … ma?), 'Can you help me …?' Put the action between 帮我 (bāng wǒ) and 吗 (ma): 你能帮我叫开锁师傅吗? (nǐ néng bāng wǒ jiào kāisuǒ shīfu ma?) 'Can you call a locksmith for me?' To ask about time, use 多久能到? (duō jiǔ néng dào?) 'How long until it arrives?' You can also ask 要等多久? (yào děng duō jiǔ?) 'How long do I have to wait?' These frames are fixed and easy to reuse.

    When to use it

Use 我被锁在外面了 with anyone: a neighbor, a hotel front desk, or a friend on the phone. Use 你能帮我叫一个开锁师傅吗? when you need someone else to make the call, perhaps because your phone is dead or you do not have the local number. If you are speaking to a property manager, 麻烦你帮我叫一个开锁师傅 (máfan nǐ bāng wǒ jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu) sounds warmer and more polite. After the call is made, ask 开锁师傅多久能到? and listen for a time such as 二十分钟 (èrshí fēnzhōng, twenty minutes) or 半小时 (bàn xiǎoshí, half an hour). If you hear 马上 (mǎshàng), it means 'right away'.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,我被锁在外面了。我的钥匙在屋里。

Hello, I'm locked out. My key is inside.nǐ hǎo, wǒ bèi suǒ zài wàimiàn le. wǒ de yàoshi zài wū li
    B

    别着急。你能帮我叫一个开锁师傅吗?

Don't worry. Can you call a locksmith for me?bié zháojí. nǐ néng bāng wǒ jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu ma
    A

    可以。你的地址和电话是多少?

Sure. What is your address and phone number?kěyǐ. nǐ de dìzhǐ hé diànhuà shì duōshao
    B

    我的地址是中山路十五号,电话是幺三八……。开锁师傅多久能到?

My address is 15 Zhongshan Road, and my phone number is 138…. How long will the locksmith take to arrive?wǒ de dìzhǐ shì zhōngshān lù shíwǔ hào, diànhuà shì yāo sān bā…. kāisuǒ shīfu duō jiǔ néng dào

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, locksmiths are usually independent workers reached by phone, and many people say 开锁师傅 rather than a formal job title. Giving your address and phone number clearly matters because the locksmith may call you back. In a hotel, ask the front desk first; staff often have a preferred locksmith and may handle payment or registration. Keep your tone calm and polite, and avoid demanding 快点 (kuài diǎn, hurry up) unless there is a real emergency.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我要叫开锁师傅 (wǒ yào jiào kāisuǒ shīfu) to a stranger, which can sound like 'I want to call a locksmith' and does not ask for help.

Try this instead: When you need someone else to act, use 你能帮我叫一个开锁师傅吗? (nǐ néng bāng wǒ jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu ma?) 'Can you call a locksmith for me?' If you are calling the locksmith yourself, say 我想叫一个开锁师傅 (wǒ xiǎng jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu), 'I'd like to call a locksmith.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'I'm locked out' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

我被锁在外面了。 (wǒ bèi suǒ zài wàimiàn le)

This uses 被 (bèi) to show that the lockout happened to you, and 了 (le) to mark the current situation. You may also hear 我进不去了 (wǒ jìn bú qù le), 'I can't get in,' which is equally valid in casual speech.

2You want a neighbor to call a locksmith. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

你能帮我叫一个开锁师傅吗? (nǐ néng bāng wǒ jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu ma?)

This politely asks the neighbor to make the call. A slightly more formal alternative is 麻烦你帮我叫一个开锁师傅 (máfan nǐ bāng wǒ jiào yí ge kāisuǒ shīfu), which adds 'sorry to trouble you'.

3Ask how long the locksmith will take to arrive.

    Show a sample answer

开锁师傅多久能到? (kāisuǒ shīfu duō jiǔ néng dào?)

多久 (duō jiǔ) asks about duration, and 能到 (néng dào) asks about arrival. You can also ask 要等多久? (yào děng duō jiǔ?), 'How long do I have to wait?' Both are correct; the second focuses on waiting rather than arrival.

    Take this with you

Keep three sentences ready: 我被锁在外面了, 你能帮我叫一个开锁师傅吗, and 开锁师傅多久能到? Say your address and phone number slowly, and confirm the wait time before you hang up.
