    警察局

    police station

    jǐngchájú

The standard term for a police station in Mainland China. Use it when asking for the building or office.

    在哪里?

    Where is it?

    zài nǎlǐ?

A general question to ask where something is. Combine with a place: [place] 在哪里?

    警察局在哪里?

    Where is the police station?

    jǐngchájú zài nǎlǐ?

The complete question. Use it to ask any stranger for the police station.

    一直走

    go straight

    yìzhí zǒu

Tells you to continue forward without turning. Often used in directions.

    左转 / 右转

    turn left / turn right

    zuǒ zhuǎn / yòu zhuǎn

Use these to indicate turning left or right at a corner or intersection.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To ask where a place is, use the pattern: [place] + 在哪里? (zài nǎlǐ?). For example, 警察局在哪里? (Where is the police station?). You can replace 警察局 with other places: 洗手间在哪里? (Where is the restroom?), 地铁站在哪里? (Where is the subway station?). The verb 在 (zài) means 'to be located at'. The question word 哪里 (nǎlǐ) means 'where'. This pattern is polite and direct, suitable for strangers.

    When to use it

Use 警察局在哪里? when you need to find a police station urgently or for general information. It is neutral in politeness; you can add 请问 (qǐngwèn, 'excuse me') at the beginning to be more polite: 请问,警察局在哪里? If you are asking a police officer or in a formal context, this is still appropriate. For directions, listen for 一直走 (go straight), 左转 (turn left), 右转 (turn right), and 到了 (you've arrived). If you don't understand, say 请再说一遍 (qǐng zài shuō yí biàn, 'please say it again').

A little context goes a long way

In China, police stations (警察局) are common in cities and towns. If you need help, you can also approach a police officer on the street. The term 派出所 (pàichūsuǒ) refers to a local police substation, often smaller and more neighborhood-based. When asking for directions, it's polite to start with 请问 (excuse me). In Taiwan, 警察局 is understood, but 派出所 is also used. In Hong Kong, the term is 警署 (jǐngshǔ) in Cantonese, but Mandarin speakers there may use 警察局.

    One thing to watch for

Saying '警察局在哪儿?' with 哪儿 (nǎr) instead of 哪里 (nǎlǐ).

Try this instead: Both 哪儿 and 哪里 mean 'where', but 哪儿 is more colloquial in northern China, while 哪里 is standard and widely understood. In this lesson, we use 哪里 for clarity. For example, 警察局在哪里? is correct and polite. If you use 哪儿, it's also correct in informal speech: 警察局在哪儿?
