When you feel unwell in a Chinese-speaking place, the first useful sentence is not a list of symptoms. It is a clear request for medical help: I need to see a doctor. In Mandarin, this is built from 我 (wǒ, I), 需要 (xūyào, need), 看 (kàn, see or visit), 医生 (yīshēng, doctor). The result is 我需要看医生 (wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng). Notice that Chinese does not add an article like a or the before 医生, and the verb 看 is not conjugated. This lesson keeps you on that single outcome: asking for a doctor or clinic and understanding where it is. You will also learn 医院 (yīyuàn, hospital), 诊所 (zhěnsuǒ, clinic), and 在哪儿 (zài nǎr, where is it), so you can act on the answer rather than just nod.

    By the end, you can…

    • say I need to see a doctor in Mandarin.
    • ask where a hospital or clinic is and understand a simple location answer.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    我需要看医生。

I need to see a doctor.

    wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng

The core sentence. Use 需要 (xūyào) for a genuine need. No article is used before 医生. In fast speech 医生 is often pronounced yīsheng with a neutral tone on 生, but the full tone shēng is also standard.

    附近有医院吗?

    Is there a hospital nearby?

    fùjìn yǒu yīyuàn ma

附近 (fùjìn) means nearby. 吗 (ma) turns the sentence into a yes-or-no question.

    最近的诊所在哪儿?

    Where is the nearest clinic?

    zuìjìn de zhěnsuǒ zài nǎr

最近 (zuìjìn) means nearest. 诊所 (zhěnsuǒ) is a small clinic, often for minor problems. 在哪儿 (zài nǎr) is the northern/standard form; in Taiwan and the south you will also hear 在哪里 (zài nǎlǐ).

    请带我去医院。

Please take me to the hospital.

    qǐng dài wǒ qù yīyuàn

请 (qǐng) makes the request polite. 带 (dài) means to take or lead someone.

    医院在左边。

The hospital is on the left.

    yīyuàn zài zuǒbiān

在 (zài) marks location. 左边 (zuǒbiān) is left; 右边 (yòubiān) is right.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 我需要 + verb + object lets you state a need directly. 我需要看医生 (wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng) means I need to see a doctor. You can replace 看医生 with other needs, but for this lesson keep it fixed. To ask about a place, use 附近有 + place + 吗, as in 附近有医院吗 (fùjìn yǒu yīyuàn ma), is there a hospital nearby? To ask where something is, use place + 在哪儿, as in 诊所在哪儿 (zhěnsuǒ zài nǎr), where is the clinic? Chinese verbs do not change for I, you, or we, so 需要 stays the same in every sentence here.

    When to use it

Use 我需要看医生 when you are speaking to a hotel receptionist, a staff member, or a passerby and you need medical help. If the problem is minor, 诊所 (zhěnsuǒ) may be enough; for something serious, ask for 医院 (yīyuàn). If you cannot walk or the situation is urgent, say 请带我去医院 (qǐng dài wǒ qù yīyuàn), please take me to the hospital. When someone answers with a location, listen for 在 (zài) plus a direction such as 左边 (zuǒbiān, left), 右边 (yòubiān, right), or 前面 (qiánmiàn, in front). If you do not understand, say 请再说一遍 (qǐng zài shuō yí biàn), please say it again. Note that 一遍 (yí biàn) here means once more, not one time in the counting sense.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,我需要看医生。

Hello, I need to see a doctor.nǐ hǎo, wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng
    B

    附近有医院,医院在右边。

There is a hospital nearby. The hospital is on the right.fùjìn yǒu yīyuàn, yīyuàn zài yòubiān
    A

    请带我去医院。

Please take me to the hospital.qǐng dài wǒ qù yīyuàn
    B

    好的,请跟我来。

Okay, please come with me.hǎo de, qǐng gēn wǒ lái

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, 医院 (yīyuàn) is a general hospital, while 诊所 (zhěnsuǒ) is a smaller clinic. Large hospitals often have a registration desk, and you may be asked 挂号 (guàhào), to register. In Taiwan and some other regions, people write 看醫生 in traditional characters, but the spoken sentence is the same. Politeness matters: adding 请 (qǐng) before a request sounds respectful without being formal.

    One thing to watch for

Saying 我要看一个医生 (wǒ yào kàn yí ge yīshēng) by adding 一个 like the English article a.

Try this instead: Chinese does not need an article here. Say 我需要看医生 (wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng) or 我要看医生 (wǒ yào kàn yīshēng). 一个 is possible when counting a specific doctor, but it sounds unnatural in this request. Note that 一 changes tone before a fourth-tone syllable: 一个 is yí ge, not yī ge.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say I need to see a doctor in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    我需要看医生。 (wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng)

This uses 我 (I), 需要 (need), 看 (see), and 医生 (doctor). 我要看医生 (wǒ yào kàn yīshēng) is also acceptable and slightly more direct.

2Ask whether there is a hospital nearby.

    Show a sample answer

    附近有医院吗? (fùjìn yǒu yīyuàn ma)

附近 means nearby, 有 means there is, and 吗 makes it a yes-or-no question. You could also ask 附近有诊所吗 for a clinic.

3Someone says 医院在左边. What does it mean?

    Show a sample answer

The hospital is on the left.

在 marks location and 左边 means left. If you hear 右边 (yòubiān), the hospital is on the right.

    Take this with you

Keep one sentence ready: 我需要看医生 (wǒ xūyào kàn yīshēng). Then ask 附近有医院吗? and listen for 在 plus a direction.
