How to Ask Where the Post Office Is in Mandarin Chinese
Learn to ask 邮局在哪儿?, understand opening hours, and buy stamps politely in Mandarin, with pinyin, tone marks, and a short dialogue.

If you need to mail a letter or buy stamps in a Chinese-speaking place, the first thing you need is the question 邮局在哪儿?(Yóujú zài nǎr?) — 'Where is the post office?' This lesson teaches that question, the words for 'here' and 'there', how to ask about opening hours, and how to buy stamps once you arrive. You will practise simplified Chinese characters, pinyin with tone marks, and polite phrases. All examples are Mandarin; regional vocabulary differences are noted where they matter.
By the end, you can…
- ask where the post office is using 邮局在哪儿?
- understand and ask about opening and closing hours
- buy stamps and say how many I want
Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

邮局在哪儿?
Where is the post office?
yóujú zài nǎr
The most common way to ask. 在 (zài) means 'is located at'; 哪儿 (nǎr) means 'where'. In Beijing and the north, 哪儿 is standard; in many southern areas people say 哪里 (nǎ lǐ).
邮局在哪儿?
Where is the post office?
yóujú zài nǎlǐ
Southern variant of the same question. Both are correct; use 哪儿 in the north and 哪里 in the south if you want to sound local.
邮局在这儿。
The post office is here.
yóujú zài zhèr
在这儿 (zài zhèr) means 'is here'. The southern equivalent is 在这里 (zài zhè lǐ).
邮局在那儿。
The post office is there.
yóujú zài nàr
在那儿 (zài nàr) means 'is there'. Use it when pointing to a place you can see.
邮局几点开门?
What time does the post office open?
yóujú jǐ diǎn kāimén
几点 (jǐ diǎn) means 'what time'. 开门 (kāi mén) literally means 'open the door', used for 'open for business'.
邮局几点关门?
What time does the post office close?
yóujú jǐ diǎn guānmén
关门 (guān mén) means 'close'. Use this to ask about closing time.
我想买邮票。
I would like to buy stamps.
wǒ xiǎng mǎi yóupiào
想 (xiǎng) softens the request to 'would like'. 邮票 (yóu piào) means 'stamp'. Add a number and 张 (zhāng), the measure word for flat items: 三张邮票 (sān zhāng yóu piào) = three stamps.
Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.
Make it make sense
Useful pattern
The core pattern is [place] + 在 + [location word]. 邮局在哪儿? (Yóujú zài nǎr?) asks where the post office is. You can replace 邮局 with any place: 银行在哪儿? (Yínháng zài nǎr?) = Where is the bank? 洗手间在哪儿? (Xǐshǒujiān zài nǎr?) = Where is the restroom? To answer, replace 哪儿 with a location: 邮局在那儿。 (Yóujú zài nàr.) = The post office is there. 邮局在这儿。 (Yóujú zài zhèr.) = The post office is here. Note that Chinese does not use a verb like 'to be' here; 在 alone carries the meaning 'is located at'.
When to use it
Use 邮局在哪儿? when you are already nearby and want directions. If you are asking a stranger, add a polite opener: 请问,邮局在哪儿? (Qǐngwèn, yóujú zài nǎr?) = Excuse me, where is the post office? 请问 (qǐngwèn) literally means 'may I ask' and makes the question more polite. For hours, ask 邮局几点开门? (Yóujú jǐ diǎn kāi mén?) = What time does the post office open? and 邮局几点关门? (Yóujú jǐ diǎn guān mén?) = What time does it close? If you only need stamps, you can say 我想买邮票。 (Wǒ xiǎng mǎi yóu piào.) = I would like to buy stamps. Add 三张 (sān zhāng) for three stamps.
Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.
请问,邮局在哪儿?
Excuse me, where is the post office?qǐngwèn, yóujú zài nǎr邮局在那儿,前面。
The post office is there, ahead.yóujú zài nàr, qiánmiàn谢谢。邮局几点关门?
Thank you. What time does the post office close?xièxie. yóujú jǐ diǎn guānmén五点关门。
It closes at five.wǔ diǎn guānménA little context goes a long way
In mainland China, post offices are usually open from around 9:00 to 17:00 or 18:00, and some close for lunch in smaller towns. Hours vary by city and branch, so asking 几点关门? is practical. 请问 (qǐngwèn) is a polite opener that works with strangers of any age. In Taiwan, people often say 郵局 (yóujú) with traditional characters and use 哪裡 (nǎlǐ) instead of 哪儿 (nǎr).
One thing to watch for
Saying 邮局是在哪儿? (yóujú shì zài nǎr?) by adding 是 (shì, 'to be').
Try this instead: Do not add 是 before 在 in this question. Say 邮局在哪儿? (Yóujú zài nǎr?). 在 already means 'is located at', so 是 is unnecessary and sounds unnatural here.
Your turn
Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

邮局几点关门? (Yóujú jǐ diǎn guān mén?)
几点 (jǐ diǎn) asks 'what time', and 关门 (guān mén) means 'close'. You can also ask 邮局几点开门? for opening time.
3How do you say 'I would like to buy three stamps'?
Show a sample answer
我想买三张邮票。 (Wǒ xiǎng mǎi sān zhāng yóu piào.)
想 (xiǎng) means 'would like', 买 (mǎi) means 'buy', and 张 (zhāng) is the measure word for flat items like stamps. 三张邮票 means 'three stamps'.
Remember the pattern [place] + 在 + 哪儿 to ask where something is, and use 几点开门/关门 to ask about hours. Add 请问 for politeness and 我想买… for buying stamps.
