When visiting temples, museums, or scenic spots in Chinese-speaking regions, you may want to take photos. But photography is not always allowed. This lesson teaches you how to ask 'Can I take photos here?' in Mandarin, understand the answer, and recognize common restriction signs. You will learn the key verb 拍 (pāi, to take a photo), the pattern 可以...吗? (kěyǐ... ma?) for asking permission, and phrases for common restrictions like 'no flash' or 'no photography.' By the end, you can politely ask staff or locals and understand their response.

    By the end, you can…

    • understand and respond to common photography restrictions in Mandarin.

    可以拍照吗?

    Can I take photos?

General polite question. Use in any setting where you are unsure if photos are allowed.

    这里可以拍照吗?

    Can I take photos here?

    zhèlǐ kěyǐ pāizhào ma?

Adds 'here' (zhèlǐ) to be specific about the location.

    可以,没问题。

    Yes, no problem.

    kěyǐ, méi wèntí.

A common affirmative response meaning photography is allowed.

    不可以拍照。

    You cannot take photos.

    bù kěyǐ pāizhào.

A direct prohibition. Often seen on signs or heard from staff.

    请勿使用闪光灯。

    Please do not use flash.

    qǐng wù shǐyòng shǎnguāngdēng.

Formal written warning common in museums and temples. 请勿 means 'please do not'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 可以...吗? (kěyǐ... ma?) is the standard way to ask for permission in Mandarin. 可以 means 'can' or 'may,' and 吗 turns the statement into a yes/no question. To ask about taking photos, put the verb phrase 拍照 (pāizhào, to take a photo) after 可以: 可以拍照吗? (kěyǐ pāizhào ma?). To specify the place, add 在这里 (zài zhèlǐ, here) before the verb: 可以在这里拍照吗? (kěyǐ zài zhèlǐ pāizhào ma?). The answer can be 可以 (kěyǐ, yes) or 不可以 (bù kěyǐ, no). Note that 拍照 is a verb-object compound; you can also say 拍照片 (pāi zhàopiàn) with the same meaning.

    When to use it

Use 可以拍照吗? when you are unsure whether photography is permitted. A sign saying 请勿使用闪光灯 means please do not use flash; that restriction alone does not establish whether photography is allowed. Ask staff and check the rules for the specific area. In this recorded example, the staff member first says 可以, granting permission, then adds the no-flash restriction. The later reply 不可以,佛像禁止拍照 refuses permission for the statues in this example. It does not establish a rule for every temple or museum.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    请问,这里可以拍照吗?

Excuse me, can I take photos here?qǐngwèn, zhèlǐ kěyǐ pāizhào ma?
    B

    可以,但是请勿使用闪光灯。

Yes, but please do not use flash.kěyǐ, dànshì qǐng wù shǐyòng shǎnguāngdēng.
    A

    好的,谢谢。那可以拍佛像吗?

Okay, thank you. Can I photograph the Buddha statues?hǎo de, xièxie. nà kěyǐ pāi fóxiàng ma?
    B

    不可以,佛像禁止拍照。

No, photographing Buddha statues is prohibited.bù kěyǐ, fóxiàng jìnzhǐ pāizhào.

A little context goes a long way

Photography rules depend on the site and the area within it. The statue restriction in the recording belongs to that example. Follow posted restrictions, ask staff when permission is unclear, and acknowledge a refusal politely.

    One thing to watch for

Treating a no-flash restriction as permission to take photographs.

Try this instead: 请勿使用闪光灯 only forbids flash. Check whether photography itself is allowed. 可以拍照吗? is the permission model taught here; 能拍照吗? can also ask about permission in context and is not inherently an error.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Can I take photos here?' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    这里可以拍照吗?(zhèlǐ kěyǐ pāizhào ma?)

This uses 这里 (here), 可以 (can), 拍照 (take photos), and 吗 (question particle). You could also say 可以在这里拍照吗?(kěyǐ zài zhèlǐ pāizhào ma?), which is equally correct.

2What does the sign 请勿使用闪光灯 mean?

    Show a sample answer

    Please do not use flash.

请勿 means please do not, 使用 means use, and 闪光灯 means flash. The sign forbids flash; it does not by itself grant permission to take photographs. In the dialogue, permission comes from the staff member saying 可以.

3If someone says 不可以拍照, what should you do?

    Show a sample answer

You should not take photos. You can respond with 好的,谢谢 (hǎo de, xièxie) to acknowledge politely.

不可以拍照 means 'you cannot take photos.' It is a direct prohibition. Arguing is impolite; simply accept and thank them. In some contexts, you might ask if there is any place where photos are allowed, but respect the rule.

    Take this with you

To ask about photography, use 可以拍照吗? (kěyǐ pāizhào ma?) or add 这里 (zhèlǐ) for 'here.' Listen for 可以 (yes) or 不可以 (no), and watch for signs like 禁止拍照 (no photos) or 请勿使用闪光灯 (no flash). Always ask politely and respect the answer.
