When you visit a museum or historical site in a Chinese-speaking region, you may want a guided tour in English rather than an audio guide. This lesson teaches you to ask that specific question clearly and politely. You will learn the key words 导游 (dǎoyóu, guided tour or tour guide) and 英文 (Yīngwén, English). You will also practice asking about times, such as 几点 (jǐ diǎn, what time) and 有没有 (yǒu méi yǒu, is there / do you have). By the end, you can ask whether an English guided tour exists, when it starts, and how it differs from an audio guide. The focus is on spoken Mandarin with simplified Chinese characters and pinyin. No prior grammar is assumed beyond basic greetings.

    By the end, you can…

    • ask whether a guided tour in English is available.
    • ask what time the English guided tour starts.
    • distinguish a guided tour from an audio guide in Mandarin.
    • understand a simple answer about tour times.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    有英文导游吗?

Is there a guided tour in English?

    yǒu Yīngwén dǎoyóu ma?

Use this exact question at a ticket counter or information desk. 有 (yǒu) means 'have/there is'; 英文 (Yīngwén) means 'English'; 导游 (dǎoyóu) means 'guided tour' or 'tour guide'; 吗 (ma) makes it a yes/no question.

    英文导游几点开始?

What time does the English guided tour start?

    Yīngwén dǎoyóu jǐ diǎn kāishǐ?

Use 几点 (jǐ diǎn) to ask 'what time'. 开始 (kāishǐ) means 'start'. This asks for the starting time of the English guided tour.

    有语音导览吗?

    Is there an audio guide?

    yǒu yǔyīn dǎolǎn ma?

语音导览 (yǔyīn dǎolǎn) means 'audio guide', a recorded device, not a live person. Use this when you want to contrast it with a guided tour.

    导游是英文的吗?

Is the guided tour in English?

    dǎoyóu shì Yīngwén de ma?

This checks the language of the tour. 是...的 (shì...de) emphasizes the language. Use it if you already know a tour exists but are unsure about the language.

    我听不懂中文。

    I don't understand Chinese.

    wǒ tīng bù dǒng Zhōngwén.

A useful supporting phrase. 听不懂 (tīng bù dǒng) means 'listen but not understand'. Use it politely to explain why you need an English tour.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

The pattern 有...吗? (yǒu...ma?) means 'Is there...?' or 'Do you have...?'. Put the thing you want between 有 and 吗. For example: 有英文导游吗? (yǒu Yīngwén dǎoyóu ma?) = 'Is there an English guided tour?' 有语音导览吗? (yǒu yǔyīn dǎolǎn ma?) = 'Is there an audio guide?' To ask about time, replace 有...吗 with 几点开始: 英文导游几点开始? (Yīngwén dǎoyóu jǐ diǎn kāishǐ?) = 'What time does the English guided tour start?' Note that Mandarin does not change the verb for tense; time is shown by words like 几点 (jǐ diǎn) or 今天 (jīntiān, today).

    When to use it

Use 有英文导游吗? at the ticket office, information desk, or entrance of a museum, palace, or temple. It is neutral and polite. If the staff answer 有 (yǒu, yes), you can follow with 几点开始? (jǐ diǎn kāishǐ?, what time does it start?). If they answer 没有 (méiyǒu, no), you can ask 有语音导览吗? (yǒu yǔyīn dǎolǎn ma?, is there an audio guide?). Remember that 导游 (dǎoyóu) refers to a live person or a live guided tour, while 语音导览 (yǔyīn dǎolǎn) is a recorded audio device. Do not use 导游 for an audio guide, and do not use 语音导览 for a human guide.

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    你好,有英文导游吗?

Hello, is there a guided tour in English?nǐ hǎo, yǒu Yīngwén dǎoyóu ma?
    B

    有,英文导游下午两点开始。

Yes, the English guided tour starts at 2 p.m.yǒu, Yīngwén dǎoyóu xiàwǔ liǎng diǎn kāishǐ.
    A

    几点结束?

What time does it end?jǐ diǎn jiéshù?
    B

    三点半结束。

It ends at 3:30.sān diǎn bàn jiéshù.

A little context goes a long way

In mainland China, 导游 (dǎoyóu) usually means a live human guide or a tour led by one. An audio guide is almost always called 语音导览 (yǔyīn dǎolǎn) or 电子导览 (diànzǐ dǎolǎn). At many museums, English guided tours run only at fixed times, so asking 几点开始 (jǐ diǎn kāishǐ) is practical. Politeness is shown by starting with 你好 (nǐ hǎo) and using 请问 (qǐngwèn, may I ask) before a question. In Taiwan, 導遊 is written 導遊 in traditional characters, but the spoken word is the same. This lesson uses simplified characters and Mandarin pronunciation.

    One thing to watch for

Using 导游 (dǎoyóu) to mean an audio guide, as in 有英文导游吗? when you actually want a recorded device.

Try this instead: Use 语音导览 (yǔyīn dǎolǎn) for an audio guide. For example, ask 有英文语音导览吗? (yǒu Yīngwén yǔyīn dǎolǎn ma?) = 'Is there an English audio guide?' Use 导游 only for a live guided tour or human guide.

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you ask 'Is there a guided tour in English?' in Mandarin?

    Show a sample answer

    有英文导游吗? (yǒu Yīngwén dǎoyóu ma?)

This uses 有...吗? for 'Is there...?' with 英文导游 (English guided tour). You could also ask 请问,有英文导游吗? (qǐngwèn, yǒu Yīngwén dǎoyóu ma?) to be more polite.

2What does 语音导览 (yǔyīn dǎolǎn) mean, and how is it different from 导游 (dǎoyóu)?

    Show a sample answer

语音导览 means 'audio guide', a recorded device. 导游 means a live guided tour or human guide.

The key difference is live person versus recorded device. If you want a human guide, use 导游; if you want a headset or app, use 语音导览.

3How do you ask 'What time does the English guided tour start?'

    Show a sample answer

英文导游几点开始? (Yīngwén dǎoyóu jǐ diǎn kāishǐ?)

几点 (jǐ diǎn) asks 'what time', and 开始 (kāishǐ) means 'start'. You can also say 英文导游什么时候开始? (Yīngwén dǎoyóu shénme shíhou kāishǐ?) with the same meaning.

    Take this with you

To ask for an English guided tour, say 有英文导游吗? (yǒu Yīngwén dǎoyóu ma?). For times, add 几点开始 (jǐ diǎn kāishǐ). Remember: 导游 is a live guide; 语音导览 is an audio guide.
