In this workshop, you will learn to talk about books and movies in Spanish. You will practice describing what a story is about, sharing your opinion, and asking for recommendations. The lesson uses short recorded lines that you can listen to and repeat. By the end, you will be able to have a simple conversation about a book or movie, using the phrases you hear.

    Describing a Story

When you talk about a book or movie, you often describe the plot, the characters, and your reaction. Listen to these lines and repeat them. «La trama es muy interesante.» means 'The plot is very interesting.' Use it to say that the story is engaging. «El personaje principal es muy complejo.» means 'The main character is very complex.' Use it to describe a character with many layers. «El final fue sorprendente.» means 'The ending was surprising.' Use it to share your reaction to how the story ended. Practice saying each line aloud, paying attention to the rhythm and pronunciation.

    Asking and Giving Recommendations

You can ask someone if they recommend a book or movie, and you can give your own recommendation. «Te recomiendo esta película.» means 'I recommend this movie to you.' Use it to suggest a film. «¿De qué se trata? ¿Me la recomiendas?» means 'What is it about? Do you recommend it to me?' This is a two-part question: first asking for the topic, then asking for a recommendation. «Trata de una detective que investiga un caso difícil. Sí, te la recomiendo.» means 'It's about a detective who investigates a difficult case. Yes, I recommend it to you.' This answers both parts: it describes the plot and gives a recommendation. Practice asking and answering with these lines.

Talking About What You Have Watched

You can also ask if someone has already watched something and respond. «¿Ya viste la serie nueva?» means 'Did you already watch the new series?' Use it to ask about a recent viewing. «Sí, la vi anoche. El final fue sorprendente.» means 'Yes, I watched it last night. The ending was surprising.' This answers the question and adds a comment about the ending. Notice how the response includes a past tense verb and a reaction. Practice this exchange with a partner, taking turns asking and answering.

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided Exchange: Ask and Answer About a Series

You and a friend are talking about a new series. One person asks if the other has watched it, and the other responds with a reaction.

Your task: Person A says «¿Ya viste la serie nueva?». Person B responds with «Sí, la vi anoche. El final fue sorprendente.». Then switch roles and repeat. Pay attention to the question and answer order.

    2

Reply Comprehension: Choose the Correct Response

You hear someone ask «¿De qué se trata? ¿Me la recomiendas?». You need to choose the best reply from two options.

Your task: Listen to «¿De qué se trata? ¿Me la recomiendas?». Then choose the correct response: Option 1: «Trata de una detective que investiga un caso difícil. Sí, te la recomiendo.». Option 2: «Te recomiendo esta película.». Which one answers both parts of the question?

    3

Recall and Role-Play: Recommend a Movie

You are talking with a friend about a movie you liked. Your friend asks for a recommendation.

Your task: Person A asks «¿De qué se trata? ¿Me la recomiendas?». Person B responds with «Trata de una detective que investiga un caso difícil. Sí, te la recomiendo.». Then switch roles: Person B asks «¿De qué se trata? ¿Me la recomiendas?» and Person A responds with «Trata de una detective que investiga un caso difícil. Sí, te la recomiendo.». Make sure the question comes before the answer.

    Common questions

How do I use these recordings to practice speaking?

Listen to each recording and repeat it aloud. Then try to use the lines in the role-play exercises. You can play both roles by yourself, but there is no automatic assessment, so check your own pronunciation and accuracy.

    What if I don't understand a line?

Each line has an English explanation in the sections above. Read the explanation, then listen to the recording again. Practice saying the line slowly, then at normal speed.
