Talking About Plots and Characters in Spanish: Saying 'The Ending Was Surprising'

Learn to describe plots, characters and surprising endings in Spanish, and recommend movies, series and books using the preterite and the verb recomendar.

Includes practice questions and sample answers.
Two friends sharing an evening conversation

When you talk about a movie, a series or a book in Spanish, you need two things: words to describe the story, and a past tense to say what happened. In this lesson you will learn to say whether an ending was surprising, describe a character, and recommend a story to a friend. We focus on narrative media like films, series and novels, not music, because stories have plots and characters you can describe. All examples use broadly useful Latin American Spanish, with regional notes where they matter.

    By the end, you can…

    • describe a plot, a character and an ending in Spanish using the preterite tense.
    • recommend a movie, series or book and react to a recommendation.

    Words you’ll actually use

Listen once. Try it slowly. Then say it without looking.

    Checking available voices…

    El final fue sorprendente.

    The ending was surprising.

    el fee-NAL fweh sohr-prehn-DEHN-teh

Use fue (from ser) to describe the ending as a quality. Common when discussing films, series and novels.

    La trama es muy interesante.

    The plot is very interesting.

    la TRA-ma es mwee een-teh-reh-SAHN-teh

La trama means 'the plot'. Use the present tense to describe the story as it is now, even if you watched it yesterday.

El personaje principal es muy complejo.

The main character is very complex.

    el pehr-soh-NAH-heh preen-see-PAL es mwee kohm-PLEH-hoh

El personaje is masculine even when the character is a woman. Principal means 'main' or 'principal'.

    Te recomiendo esta película.

I recommend this movie to you.

    teh reh-koh-MYEHN-doh ES-ta peh-LEE-koo-la

Recomendar changes its stem: recomiendo. The object pronoun te comes before the verb.

    ¿De qué se trata?

    What is it about?

    deh keh seh TRA-ta

A natural way to ask about the plot of a movie, series or book. Tratarse de means 'to be about'.

Pronunciation guides are approximate. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Make it make sense

    Useful pattern

To describe a plot, use the preterite for events: La historia trata de una familia que se mudó a otra ciudad y descubrió un secreto. 'The story is about a family that moved to another city and discovered a secret.' Use the present tense for opinions and descriptions: La trama es lenta, pero el final es sorprendente. 'The plot is slow, but the ending is surprising.' Notice that adjectives agree with the noun: el final sorprendente, la historia sorprendente.

    When to use it

Use fue sorprendente for a one-time reaction: El final fue sorprendente. Use es sorprendente for a general opinion: El final es sorprendente. In Latin America, película covers a film and serie covers a TV series; in Spain you will also hear filme. To recommend, say Te recomiendo... or Te la recomiendo. 'I recommend it to you.' If you did not like it, soften it: No me gustó mucho, pero tiene buenos personajes. 'I didn't like it much, but it has good characters.'

    A conversation you could have

Listen to each line, then take one part and reply out loud.

    A

    ¿Ya viste la serie nueva?

Did you already watch the new series?ya BEES-teh la SEH-ryeh NWEH-ba
    B

Sí, la vi anoche. El final fue sorprendente.

Yes, I watched it last night. The ending was surprising.see, la vee ah-NOH-cheh. el fee-NAL fweh sohr-prehn-DEHN-teh
    A

¿De qué se trata? ¿Me la recomiendas?

What is it about? Do you recommend it to me?deh keh seh TRA-ta? meh la reh-koh-MYEHN-das
    B

Trata de una detective que investiga un caso difícil. Sí, te la recomiendo.

    It's about a detective who investigates a difficult case. Yes, I recommend it to you.TRA-ta deh OO-na deh-tehk-TEE-beh keh een-behs-TEE-ga oon KAH-soh dee-FEE-seel. see, teh la reh-koh-MYEHN-doh

A little context goes a long way

Ask what someone thought of the movie before giving your own view, then use the recorded recommendation phrase. In ¿Ya viste la serie nueva?, viste asks about a past viewing event; an opinion can follow in the present tense. Some speakers use vos rather than tú. This does not make viste in ¿Ya la viste? stress a different syllable. Follow the recorded questions here; more detailed voseo differences belong in a separate lesson.

    One thing to watch for

El final era sorprendente for a single surprising ending you just watched.

Try this instead: Use fue for a completed reaction: El final fue sorprendente. The imperfect era describes an ongoing or habitual past situation, as in Cuando era niño, veía muchas películas. 'When I was a child, I used to watch many movies.'

    Your turn

Try answering out loud before checking a possible answer.

1How do you say 'The ending was surprising' in Spanish?

    Show a sample answer

    El final fue sorprendente.

Fue is the preterite of ser, used for a completed reaction to a specific ending. El final es sorprendente is also valid if you are stating a general opinion.

2You want to recommend a series to a friend. What do you say?

    Show a sample answer

Te recomiendo esta serie. or Te la recomiendo.

Both are correct. Te recomiendo esta serie names the series; te la recomiendo replaces it with the pronoun la. In Spain you might also hear Te la recomiendo igual.

3Ask a friend what a movie is about.

    Show a sample answer

    ¿De qué se trata?

This asks about the plot. You can also ask ¿De qué trata la película? Both are natural; the second names the movie explicitly.

    Take this with you

Describe events with the preterite, opinions with the present, and recommend with te recomiendo or te la recomiendo. Say El final fue sorprendente for a one-time reaction, and remember that personaje is masculine even for a female character.
