In this workshop you will practice talking about music in Spanish. You will learn how to say you love a genre, how to say you are a big fan of an artist, how to ask a friend what music they like, and how to agree or disagree. The practice uses short, natural lines you can repeat out loud. You do not need to invent new phrases. You will reuse the same expressions in three short tasks: a guided exchange, a listening choice, and a recall task where you play both roles.

Say what you love and what you are a fan of

Start with a strong positive statement. «Me encanta el pop.» means "I love pop." You can also express enthusiasm with «Soy muy fan del jazz.», meaning "I am a big fan of jazz." The second line is about a genre, just like the first. In del jazz, del combines de and el. Listen to both recorded lines, then say each slowly and at a natural speed. Use these two supplied examples to practice expressing a strong musical preference.

    Ask a friend and react

To keep the conversation going, ask a simple question. «¿Qué música te gusta?» means "What music do you like?" This is friendly and informal, so it fits a chat with a friend. If you want to agree with a positive statement, use «A mí también.», which means "Me too." For example, if your friend says they love pop, you can answer with «A mí también.». If you do not share the same taste, you can still answer politely and then say what you prefer. In the next section you will hear a short exchange and choose the best reply.

    Hear a short exchange

Now listen to a short conversation between two friends. One person asks a question, the other answers and asks back, and then they agree or disagree. The lines are short, so you can repeat them immediately. Notice how the question «¿Qué música te gusta?» is the same as the question you already practiced. The answer «Me encanta el pop. ¿Y a ti?» adds ¿Y a ti? to return the question. The reply «A mí también. Soy muy fan de Bad Bunny.» agrees and adds a fan statement. The last line «A mí no. Prefiero el jazz.» disagrees and gives a different preference. Listen once without speaking, then pause after each line and repeat it. This prepares you for the tasks below.

    Hear the phrases in context

Listen once, then say the phrase yourself. Slow playback keeps the original pitch.

    Me encanta el pop.

    I love pop.

    meh en-KAHN-tah el pop

    Soy muy fan del jazz.

I'm a big fan of jazz.

    Try a short roleplay

Read one side aloud, then answer in your own words. The goal is to make the exchange yours.

    B

A mí no. Prefiero el jazz.

    Not me. I prefer jazz.
Say it before you study it

    Your turn

Try each prompt out loud. Choose a guided start, the full sequence, or a challenge pass after your first attempt.

    1

Guided exchange: ask and answer about music

You are chatting with a friend. You will play both roles, but first practice your part. Use only the lines you have heard.

Your task: Step 1: Say the question «¿Qué música te gusta?» out loud. Step 2: Answer with «Me encanta el pop. ¿Y a ti?». Step 3: Agree with «A mí también. Soy muy fan de Bad Bunny.». Step 4: Disagree with «A mí no. Prefiero el jazz.». Repeat the four steps twice, changing which line feels most natural to you.

    2

Reply comprehension: choose the best response

Imagine a friend says one of the lines below. Choose the best reply from the options. There is no automatic scoring, so say your choice out loud and then check the answer.

Your task: Situation 1: Your friend says «Me encanta el pop.», and you also love pop. Do you reply with «A mí también.» or with «A mí no. Prefiero el jazz.»? Situation 2: Your friend says «Me encanta el pop.», but you prefer jazz. Do you reply with «A mí también.» or with «A mí no. Prefiero el jazz.»? Situation 3: Your friend asks «¿Qué música te gusta?». Do you reply with «Me encanta el pop. ¿Y a ti?» or with «A mí también.»?

    3

Recall with correct roles: who says what?

In the short exchange, one person asks and the other answers. You will now recall the lines and say them with the correct role.

Your task: Say the question that starts the exchange. Then say the answer that includes a genre and returns the question. Then say the line that agrees and adds a fan statement. Finally, say the line that disagrees and gives a different preference. Use the recording references to check your order.

    Common questions

What is the difference between me encanta and me gusta?

Me encanta is stronger than me gusta. You can use me encanta for something you love, and me gusta for something you like. Both can be followed by el plus a genre, as in «Me encanta el pop.».

How do I agree with a positive statement?

Use «A mí también.» to say "Me too." It works after a positive statement about music, for example after someone says they love a genre. If you do not agree, you can say «A mí no. Prefiero el jazz.» and then give your own preference.
